That's a cool looking boat! You got a great start on the demo. Lots of work but very worth it! Lots of luck with her!

Re: The Green Hornet

Removed the rest of the floor, stringers, and the transom. The floor was so saturated it came out in chunks. I was blown away at how heavy that made the back of the boat. I have a lot of grinding to do now to get ready for the new stuff. I'm debating on putting seacast and all composite but don't really know if the cost is worth it? Would be nice to know it wouldn't have any wood to rot. I plan on keeping this boat for the rest of my life. Any thoughts?

Re: The Green Hornet

cool project you got their.
I would go back in with wood.
If it's glassed correctly it will last 30 years or more.

I think you got a great deal on your boat.

What would you do?

What would you do?

I have a situation and I hope anyone will chime in. I can't decide whether to keep the deck the way it is with the raised lid (which I really don't like). I know I will be tripping over it. I originally cut out the bulkhead to see if I had any rot and I didn't. I thought about keeping it original and putting in an access hatch in the bulkhead or I could grind the top lid flat and patch the deck to make it flush. What do you think?

I'd see if I could get the top level and have the access in the bulkhead. I would be tripping over that all the time as well.

I would also trip on that constantly. I am not sure exactly how i would right the problem, but that thing would have to go. Is it hinged or does it just lift in and out? if it just lifts in and out you could cut some wood to fit and just put one of those recessed latch handles on it so you can get it in and out.

Yes it is hinged. I thought about doing the same thing but I wouldn't have a place to mount my pedestal for the seat.

Could you cut that whole abomination down flush and then fit a piece of plywood over the whole front deck?

That raised lid is for a reason. It keeps water from entering the bilge. You could lower it, re frame it in and put a knife edge hatch on it which works pretty well as long is it doesn't flex and loose the seal. Otherwise, upgrade your bilge pump to an automatic style.

Re: What would you do?

Does the lid actually have a function that you use? Access? Looks like you could actually cut the entire hatch out and seal the hole up so you could use that area for standing sitting what ever. Can you stand on the lid now? You could still install the pedestal base too, and reinforce it well.
I have a small hatch in the bow of my Lone Star I?m restoring (1961 Fleetwood-Sport) I think they had this for anchoring and access to the front area of the boat, it creates a great breeze when under way.

Re: What would you do?

that lip looks like a sure way to end up in the water.

it also looks like you have a self bailing deck?????

to do it right with out adding too much weight......your gonna have to pull the cap unless you can get under there......i would cut out the perimeter of the hatch.....glass in a chunk of ply under it......(big ply) then glass it in from the top.
full days work.......

Since you have made access to the underside, I'd do what EZ said and remove the lid and deck it.
Here's my idea. Glass in two support on either side of the hatch the same height as the raised hatch opening. Rivet some aluminum angle to the sides (See the red line in the drawing and deck it.

Re: What would you do?

I suggest you keep it like it is.

Post a pic with your seat up there ..

Mod this and mod that .. deck it and cut this ..and glass that ..

I hope you Really dont like that little lip on there because as soon as you start to mod the deck your in for Hundreds of dollars and Lots of time to make it look Right.

It would be less extensive if you Mod your Hatch then to mod your deck .. Mebbe add slopes to your hatch ?

Meh.. I would keep it the same and learn where you need to step. With the seat on there I dont see how your tripping over it all the time.

YD.

Re: The Green Hornet with pics

Haven't done much on the Hornet lately. I was determined to get the cap off yesterday. Just glad I didn't cut the front bulkhead completely out. Keeping it in there helped hold the shape of the hull. Got all the tabs ground and ready to start rebuilding.

To all the moderators, is there any way to move a thread in here? I started a new thread and should have put it in "The Green Hornet" thread. Don't know what I was thinking? Here's the link

Finally able to get the cap out of the way. Now comes the fun part. At this point I should start to the see the boat start coming back together. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions about the front deck. I have never been a big fan of the old boats that have raised hatches. I have decided to remove the old hatch and grind down the lip. I'll patch the existing hole and then place a thin piece of wood across the whole deck, fiberglass and I should be good to go. I will worry about it later. Right now it's on to the new transom, stringers, and deck. Can't wait 'till I get to the point of planning compartments and livewell.

Re: The Green Hornet with pics

After watching JDA1975's threads and much thought I decided to flip the boat and paint the hull before adding any more weight to the inside. I noticed after flipping that there are a lot of blisters. I only think it's the paint. The brown was was painted later by the previous owner. I'll grind some down later today and post. Gonna put some kind of green stripe in it but nothing to the extreme of JDA's. How would y'all put the stripe?

Maybe go with a water line stripe? or something that really just follows the lines of the boat...

Regarding your thoughts on the fore hatch, if you were inclined to maintain a storage/accessible feature in the bow as before, I like plastic hatches. They are gasketed and relatively flush with the surface they're mounted to. When i replaced all the wood deck on my aluminum boat with aluminum, I used the plastic hatches. they handle foot traffic and have lasted me for five years and still in service, sitting outdoors 24/7 in central Texas.

iboats store has some listed, here

You can get them in a variety of colors and sizes, and different latching configurations.

Cheers!

Not sure, but I don't think those are paint blisters. I think it will be typical fiberglass blistering and if so you will need to use a dremel tool to grind em out, clean em with acetone, and mix up some structural Peanut Butter to fill em.
