Not sure, but I don't think those are paint blisters. I think it will be typical fiberglass blistering and if so you will need to use a dremel tool to grind em out, clean em with acetone, and mix up some structural Peanut Butter to fill em.

So what causes these blisters?

Several casues, bad layup at the factory, poor gelcoat job, or sitting in thewater for most of it's life. Not an easy fix and even when fixed nothing to say it won't come back. As many here know I'm a hugh fan of paint and not gelcoat for an exterior rework, but in this case gelcoat would be the best move. Like Woody said you'll need to open up all the blister and see if they are holding any "liquid" or other things.

Most likely you'll have to grind down to good glass to get them all out so this is why I'd suggest a new gelcoat job over the hull.

Or you could just sand the hull good, paint it and say the he** with it. Depends on how long you plan to keep the craft.

CW,

Went to pop open some of the blisters yesterday but none of them popped. Tried several and none of them were wet, hollow, or had anything in them. At this point I'm just going to grind them down and repaint.

Got the grinder out with 40 grit and went to town. I noticed something different. It may just be me but the paint looked like copper. It had a shine in some places and I also noticed that some of the paint was a tarnished turquoise color. This may be a dumb question but could it be some kind of metal paint? The dust even smelled like metal. Once I get it smooth I need some opinions. Should I put vinylester, gelcoat, or some kind of filler before primer and paint?

that is just standard bottom paint.....or anti fouling paint. it is used when the boat is kept in water for long periods of time.....if keeps growth off the hull.

the blisters look like boat pox.....you dont want to deal with them......ignore them.

Oh I'm ignoring them! Just sanding them down. Anything I should worry about?

If they're filled with H2O!! :D

I'd paint right over them after sanding.
