A guy from NY was fishing Canadian waters recently(No passport or Enhanced lic.) Canadian authorities stopped him, and charged him around $1000, or his boat would be towed. He had been fishing the spot for years, and had never recieved flak from the authorities. I'm betting that there is more to this story that isn't making the news.

BTW there are 1,793 islands. Dock in Alexandria Bay(we call it A-Bay). Enjoy the shops, and ask the locals where to eat. Uncle Sam Boat Tours is nice, and it's right there at the docks. They use triple-decker paddlewheel ships. The 2 nation cruise(as I believe it's still called) takes you past many of the landmarks, over shipwrecks, and it stops at Boldt Castle. The tour guides are funny, knowledgeable, and will answer your questions about the 1000 Islands. Even if you don't do the tour you can still have Uncle Sam Boat Tours take you to Boldt Castle on a shuttle boat. I highly recommend visiting the castle as they have recently renovated much of it, and the grounds are freakin beautiful!! It's on Heart Island BTW.

jserb.... the 'hysteria' over open water travel seems to have died down on this trip.... not quite as intense as the Lake Michigan Run. Enjoy... we are doing the Trent-Severn Waterway trip in August....section from Peterborough to Big Chute...if I can ever figure out how to upload pics I'll post a report...have fun.

There is a beach at Kring point. It's a few miles past ABay. The beach is on Goose bay.

Well only 3 days away from the big trip?any last minute suggestions or things to remember, things to do, things to see?! The truck and trailer are giving me heck right now?.cant get my yellow running lights to come on?.they were flickering when I was pulling the boat home from the ramp the other day, and I cant figure out why??? The brake lights work (however none of the yellow running lights work..) I thought these were tied together somehow?..the brake lights light up in the dim ?running light? glow (which they are supposed to), however not yellow running lights? so im working on that right now?

Post the symptoms on the 'Trailer & Towing' classification ..... or just do a search......tried the ground connection....life was simplier when all you had to do was hang an oil lamp off the the back of your wagon....

Here is the Canadian Border Security information site with information on how to report in when you arrive in Canada.
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5061-eng.html
I think this only applies to when you set foot on land, but call the number and ask for clarification on that detail.

As for ID requirements, this is what they say;
"If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada. However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, as well as photo identification."

I t amy be a bit out of the way but when you are heading for the 1000 islands, if you pass north of Wolf Island you will pass Old Fort Henry http://www.forthenry.com/home.htm
They fire off a black powder cannon over looking Deadman bay several times a day as part of the show. It's pretty startling from Cedar island if you are not ready for the boom to break the peace and quiet.
Website shows cannon Blasts at; 11:50AM 3:10PM 4:50PM

Re: The 2011 Great Adventure to Lake Ontario - 1000 islands!!

To recap why and how we chose this location for our trip:
My wife and I have set out on a mission to visit, cross, and ?conquer? all 5 Great Lakes. We currently live on Lake Erie and do most of our boating here, so Lake Erie has been explored, crossed, and conquered several times over! Last summer we completed our journey to Chicago by crossing Lake Michigan (search ?Lake Michigan to Chicago trip for photos and a recap of that trip). This year the great adventure was to Lake Ontario! In researching locations, destinations, and routes to take, I came across the 1000 islands. A stretch of the St Lawrence Seaway 20 miles long that is littered with over 1,700 individual islands. Upon researching the area and discovering how amazing and truly beautiful this place was, it was decided on a cold December night that if we were going all this way to Lake Ontario, we should spend the week boating in this area. After months of research, countless hours of reading about the 1000 islands on the internet, our trip was planned. We would trailer our boat 533 miles to Oswego Ny, launch at Oswego and begin our 67 mile crossing of lake Ontario up to the St Laurence Seaway and to our private islands (bluff island).
That?s right, we were blessed to have found a beautiful island for rent right in the heart of the 1000 islands! We rented a home on Bluff Island, located in the city of Clayton NY. Only way on and off the island was by boat! This was a sure way to guarantee plenty of boating and ultimate privacy. We spent 6 nights and 7 days in the thousand islands exploring one of the most beautiful freshwater boating locations in the world! Below is the story of our great adventure!

Our great adventure started off like this:

4:15AM Dunkin Donuts?.As you can see here we took two trucks and two boats. The Scarab was used for the crossing, while the aluminum was trailered up to the town of Clayton (2 miles from our island) and was launched there and used as a ?rum runner? for quick trips into town and bumming around for late night cruises.

How about this set up? Came across this guy just outside Niagara, had an F ? 650 and a 42 Baja with triples on it?quite the gear?.needless to say we left him in Niagara with a honk and a thumbs up and said: ?we?ve come all this way, lets stop and see the falls!?.
ThousandIslands014.jpg

Going there we crossed over on Grand Island; quite the bridges to go up over and down with a 30? boat behind you!!!

Re: The 2011 Great Adventure to Lake Ontario - 1000 islands!!

So after a less than impressive lunch at Denny?s, we hit the road to Oswego Ny to launch the scarab! 4.5 hours later I was about ready to fall asleep at the wheel. Being up since 4 AM, it was now 4PM and we were just putting the boat in the water! Needless to say I had never trailered that far before and I expelled all my energy ensuring a safe drive for 9 hours, and now I had to keep that same focus for another 2 hours boat ride??I will admit I was not looking forward to getting in the boat in AT ALL!?..
ThousandIslands049.jpg

Of course as soon as I spun up the motors and got ready to push away from the dock, that all changed, and I got my second wind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something I don?t want to leave out is just as we arrived in Oswego a storm had just passed, and you all know what that meant!!!! Perfect water conditions! The lake was like Glass!!!!! Below is a shot of our crossing route. 47 miles to Duck Island and 18 miles up the St. Laurence Seaway to Bluff.
ThousandIslands078.jpg

One thing I enjoyed about Lake Ontario is immediately outside of the Harbor in Oswego we were suddenly in the deepest water I have ever been in:
ThousandIslands069.jpg

And then it got deeper..
ThousandIslands070.jpg

And then it got even deeeperrrrr
ThousandIslands071.jpg

530? holds the record for me so far!!!
ThousandIslands073.jpg

We shot across the lake at a steady 42 mph!
