ALLLLL ABOUT CAMPING..........we take the boat to local islands throughout the summer and camp out on them...however this is a "special" trip. And well going for an entire week, the wife and Friends would be too excited about camping for a week...
But in this case its not about the money (cant believe i said that)....but its the truth...this is a vaca and a once in a life time opportunity to "own" you own private island for a week....

P.S. i JUST realized the Title of this said 2010 adventure....when it was supposed to say 2011 adventure!...i am beginning to think the 2 cycle fumes are getting to me...

Bolt (SP) castle of course, A-bay for shopping or night life.

I know this has been mentioned briefly but I just wanted to reiterate.....

If you counted all of the rocks that are 1 foot beneath the surface as islands it would be called the 1,000,000 islands. You can be in 70' of water with a rock sticking out of the water 10' away from the boat. You have to be VERY:eek: careful in some area as it is impossible to mark all of the barely submerged rocks. Please be alert at all times cause no garmin chart is going to keep you safe from all the rocks. Most of the main channels are pretty safe. I personally know 2 people who have destroyed the lower units on there boats by hitting submerged rocks.

I'm sure you know this but if you are in the main channel of the St. Lawrence and you see the big Ocean freighters going by don't go anywhere near them, especially there wake.

Between Lake Ontario and the 1,000 islands this could be some of the most challenging boating you will ever do. If you are aware of the special risks each area presents you will have nothing to worry about.

Grenadier Centre or Lake of The Isles for anchoring, swimming and hanging out for the day.
This web site for some good info:
http://www.visitalexbay.org/

I'm not to familiar with many beaches....but I'm sure there are some.

I know up here where we live we have several "secluded bay's", and ?rope swings? and cool little secluded islands we can go on for the day. I am looking to see if any locals know how anywhere like this around the 1000 islands. Also if anyone knows: if there are any public islands we can go and have lunch on please let us know. I know around here we have some islands we can go and spend the day on. Just checking to see if any locals know of such settings to do so.

Well.......i dont know how i feel about this new "style" of chat room. But i guess we will have to push through it!
Just giving everyone an update on our trip this summer, we are still looking for places to boat while in the 1000 islands. Places such as beaches people go to, rope swings, bays, or neat small islands we can explore for the day. We are in need of someone who has spent a lot of time in the St Lawrence to help tell us where everyone goes when boating out there.... anyone?

Re: The 2011 Great Adventure to Lake Ontario - 1000 islands!!

As a resident of this area, the primary winds during the summer come from the west/south west across the lake. Its a fluke day to get an easterly wind so trying to plan for a day where your going to get an east wind is quite hard. In the fall (september-october) an East wind is more likely. She's not a forgiving lake and like others have said, the winds can kick up out of nowhere and there really isn't a place to take shelter once you get out there. I'm on the protected west end of Chaumont Bay which is the last big bay in NY towards the Canadian border. Also with that route you have highlighted, there are very few places to refuel if you need to until you get into the St. Lawrence Seaway in Cape Vincent or in Mud Bay at Martin's Marina. Sacketts Harbor/Henderson Bay will have fuel, but there really isn't another Marina or fuel up station till those.

Another safer suggestion might be to launch at Long Point state park which still requires you to venture a good ways out onto the lake but offers some island protection of the weather turns bad.

As for Oswego, The Best Western (Captains Quarters) is a nice hotel with a place to dock your boat. The resturant inside is quite nice as well, my best friend had his wedding after party there last summer.

As far as places to see...

Alexandria Bay, is quite the social spot during the summer. A-Bay is a crazy party place during Pirates weekend, not soo much a family thing with younger kids as some people can get raunchy. Kingston Ontario is just a puddle jump around Wolff Island, plenty of docking space. Can't remember the hotel name, but on Marine Channel 68 IIRC the Marina goes by Confederation Basin. There are quite a few neat things to see there and good Micro brewerys. Plenty of little stores along Princess Street. Wellesley Island has a nice state park to camp, its not very remote and will have other people. Right before you enter the St. Lawrence Seaway there is a nice stream washed stone/white sand beach in Wilson Bay. The sand goes at least 200yrd out into the water, lots of ppl Anchor here throughout the summer. Clayton NY, is a small town feel and some local shopping stores to see and some good Art Gallerys.

Besides that, I haven't gone much further up in a boat. However I hear going all the way up through the Rideau Canal into Ottawa is very pleasant.

If you have any regional questions, feel free to PM me and I'll help out as much as I can.

Re: The 2011 Great Adventure to Lake Ontario - 1000 islands!!

Hey everyone! 64 days until the bring trip. With the cost of gas this is going to be a trip to remember! Once again anyone with additional tips, sights to see, or specific islands to visit please respond!! I have noticed there are not that many posts regarding the 1000 islands and this will make for great trip planning for future captains. Below are some new questions i have thought of for all of you.

1. any good area's to Kayak ??
2. Best food on the river?
3. Is it possible to dock out boat at a golf course and play a few rounds?
4. What can we do on the Canada side??

Re: The 2011 Great Adventure to Lake Ontario - 1000 islands!!

Hey Green Horn,

"We especially like the Canadian side as they have a lot of islands that are empty except for docks for the day tripper or overnight stays. It is .90 a foot for overnight which we don't mind paying at all(honor system)."

Can anyone tell me where these islands are exactly??? there are a 1000 islands, a rough location of where these kinds of islands are (one that allow you to dock at for the day/ are they apart of a Canadian state park system??)will help!! Do they fill up quick? Are there several islands that have this policy? fill me in boys!!

I think he is referencing the Canadian National Park islands. You can find out more here:
http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/on/lawren/index.aspx

The ones I am familiar with are in the "Admiralty" group of which Mulcaster and Camelot are two. That site has a lot of great information. Not sure about your golf question...

Re: The 2011 Great Adventure to Lake Ontario - 1000 islands!!

hey all, getting ready to get ready for our big trip! At the end of the month I am bringing the trailer home to check all 6 wheels. Need to make sure we are prepared for our 1000 mile haul! I believe we will pull the boat out of the water on the 4th of July. We are leaving on the 10th of July. I plan on taking lots and lots of photos with a good narrative for everyone. If you havent checked out last years Lake Michigan adventure to Chicago search for it "Michigan to Chicago trip help", or just search by my user ID. This thread documents with LOTS OF PHOTOS our last great adventure.
This is all part of our 'Great Lakes challenge" where we are boating on a new Great Lake each year. Last year was Lake Michigan, we live on Lake Erie (so we got that one down), now were doing Lake Ontario & the St Laurence Seaway for 2011. Please participate as much as possible, this trip only gets safer and funner with your help!!

You should consider the Rideau Canal as part of your trip. Quite a sight. A few sets of locks to go through. Google it and see what you think. I'm in the Kingston area and the downtown sights and food are good. You could also consider heading west a bit on the Canadian side to Picton. Check the places out on the net and see what you think.

By land crossing with a boat on a trailer? or by water? If so, not sure. I know we have to have a passport to go into the US by air or an "enhanced drivers license" to cross by car.

Can't go wrong having your passport handy... :)

I live in NY and use an "Enhanced Drivers License" for crossing with a car. That or a passport does the trick.

Enjoy your trip!
