Hullo all. Haven’t had much chance to post progress since the holidaze. Santa did bring me a nice glass block window to fill the hole in my shower stall

and sent the cute elf to install it

you see why I call her EOTSKU....brains, beauty, a badazz with mortar and bricks or a power saw, can kick my tail on a mt bike, and even puts up with me and my 10 boats.

we had a visit from Aqualung

Still not much pic-worthy progress on the Holiner altho I’m working on it every night, along with the house renov. Just mostly more varnishing.

Been studying Bluefin’s work on his boat as I plan to steal or modify lots of his good ideas for bracing.

I did get my LED strip mounted under the rear area....glued it into an aluminum U-channel and then bolted that in place with the same screws holding the redwood trim. Unfortunately, now I realize it needs to be moved about 2" stern-ward.

I screwed up yet again in my planning on the bow rail. Bought a bunch of thick wall 1" stainless tubing before I thought about fact that I wouldn’t be able to get the gradual-radius bends I needed to follow the bow curve....this stuff is too stout to be able to controllably bend in long radii. So I’m going to get the Harbor Fright hydraulic pipe bender and use the SS tube for the uprights and for the console grab rail (a la Mariner), and then order some thin wall 7/8 alum for the horizontal rail sections. I’ll have to use short pieces of the 1" stuff for bushings inside the “T” fittings since I already have a ton of 1" fittings.

the LED strip, mounted in U-channel

[/IMG] the SS tubing, laughing at the hickey and its operator. not to worry, the HF bender came home last night....i should have the last laugh

I may have mentioned deciding to bail on the solo helm seat, in favor of a swingback seat/fishbox. Senor Brown Truck brought this yesterday:

Making some good progress, despite being real busy B, I'm pretty much n the watching spar dry stage as well, trying to figure out which little projects to do instead of procrastinating

more varnish party, with the Deluxe Added Feature of the Starchief side panels getting trim strips glued on

varnish takes too long to dry this time of year; sometimes i have to speed it up to get it hard enough to sand before next coat. the impromptu Accelerated Varnish Dryer:

and then i FINALLY got a friend lined up to help me goop and install the transom bolts (at least, the below-splashwell ones) so that step is done. to celebrate, i finished up the painting on the transom cap. 30+mph wind didn't help, so even using one of the floor sections as a partial windbreak, i still got a few runs due to having to spray from about 6" away. not perfect, but it's done. i have to keep reminding myself that we're not trying for SOTY here, IT'S A FISHING BOAT........

i used the Ace Hdwe house-brand gloss white, which turns out to be just enough different in shade from the Rusto gloss white i used on the transom that you can see it....but it looks OK

Looks like you're getting close to hangin' the Dorm Fridge, AKA Chrysler, soon - The stern seems about done. Nice looking helm seat, is it also a fish box/cooler?

And beat that tubing into submission with the bender. If it doesn't work, I guess you can beat yourself into submission. :)

the other drying rack/paint etc warmer....if you're paying for the gas to run pilot lights, might as well get some use out of em

a brief cautionary note: some things you don't want to leave lying around next to each other. results could be disastrous if you wander into the bathroom first thing in the morning, before you're fully awake:

GA, yeah, that has a 50 qt (they claim....) insulated box with drain. ironically, the same model withOUT the insulation was more expensive. we'll see how it does holding ice. seat height is only about 19", so i'll still have to build a box under it so i can see over my console. may try to put the kicker fuel underneath in removable tank.

and on the dorm fridge, yup, we be getting close to a real old fashioned West Texas hangin, fit to make Judge Roy Bean proud....just need to get the steering with correct cable length (been using the Starchief box in console mockups) ordered so i can attach it before dropping Walter's finest on. oh, and i guess paint the hull before adding all that extra weight....

Holy cow Bruce... you've been a busy dude...! Love the wood work... looking great! Tooth paste or 4200.... hmmmm if you seal your teeth will you ever get a cavity again??/ :)

Nice bench seat --- that is going to look wicked!

Keep the wheels turning man... before long it's --- well summer again --- just realized where you are and bets are that you have soft water!

Take care man!

well, i AM a bit worried about leakage from those transom bolts i installed with toothpaste.....;) i got the helm bench cuz i wasn;t sure how/where i was going to install a 2d seat

we have plenty of soft water, at least the lower elevation lakes. just ugly and fishing sucks. aside from that.......... i'm hoping to have her ready for another Memorial Day run south. yeah, i know i said that last year, and the year before that, and..........

Careful now - 5200 makes great whitening toothpaste but toothpaste is lousy sealant. :D

Transom looks DF-ready! Then, maybe EZ will come-back and say Hi!

I have the insulated Todd Swingback in my BlueFin and love it. Keeps ice for days...and its just round enough to prevent the dumb herring from bashing their dumb skulls-in. The only thing that I'm not overly impressed with is the cushioning...yours more "cushiony" :D

I'm truly honored that you want to integrate some of my brace ideas into the Holiner!! You need to put as much tin between you and those swords as possible!!! :scared:

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

thanks guys. yeah, i bet he couldn't stay away if we had a running fridge to show him. and cold beer for all.

BF, glad to hear that. so many of those type arrangements don't keep ice worth beans. and mullet are at least as dumb as herring. i definitely will need the seat padding, ain't none on my skinny nalgas. one big Q is what exactly i can stow in the "box" i'll have to build under it to raise it enough to see over my "extra height tall-person console." ironically, all this talk of bracing got me thinking about how to add bracing to the portabote so i can use my 10hp honda (boat is rated for 6hp and 50 lbs motor, Honda weighs about 82 lbs) on it, and i think i have it figured out. i eventually expect i'll be stowing it inside the open area of Holiner, for fishing shallow lagoons.

another option may be raising the lid?

Slide-out tackle storage in the lower section (solid) and fat padding on-top (dashed)?

Love the flip back seat.

It has been a fantastic add on for the Mariner. I reupholstered it making extra cushy for my skinny ars.

That's a real good idea BF, by looking at the seat size three 9 x 14 Plano boxes would fit in there perfectly, with access from the front or rear.
