Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Welcome back, if only briefly.

I don't even want to think about the stern look I'd get if I suggested a shower to the Admiral w/ a 3X hole in the wall, in the SUMMER, let alone late fall. Even if we were isolated in the middle of our own 1000acre nature preserve :faint2: :watermelon:

Yeah, hoping to give epoxy another go myself today. We'll see, less then positive results last go around

Welcome back B2, been kinda wondering where you went. Work and the day to day trials and tribulations do seem to get in the way of what we really want to be doing sometimes.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

actually, after reading about Jas' obsession, er, diligence, in working in the snow by headlamp at 4 am, no doubt with Ride of the Valkyries on the ipod, i need to step up the game, work or no work.........

last night, i got a little epoxy slung and gave the rear floorboard its episiotomy with the jigsaw for better access to the bilge and pump room, and got the last of the redwood trim cut end epoxied. not much progress, but more than i made in last 2 months. gonna try to get at least 5-15 min done every night. tonight i'll be trying to get the "bodywork" on the buggered up areas of transom cap done, so i can sand it smooth and paint it. and i may need to do a little pushback against the Admiral on needing to have some boat time along with the house renov, for my mental health.

Oh gosh, please don't model your work sessions after mine man. My sleeping habit are ridiculous, entirely unhealthy. It was 2:30am as I was unbolting the steering controls the other day, in the middle of the woods, headlamp. That's just dum, :der: don't do it!

Jas, that's not called dumb, it's passion. no one would think you crazy if you did similar stuff to get, say, football tix....why do we give sports craziness a pass (cf. Roscoe's Angels AKA the Hypothermia Honeys) but call boat craziness crazy? who ends up with something better in the end?

not much progress this week...too much work at work, coming home so exhausted i stare at the wall. i DID find that the epoxy-saturation plan works well for other stuff than boats, like the boards i'm going to mortar over while installing the glass block, and the bottom of the furnace plenum. oh, and i have one less glass boat at home now! sorry, Jas, gave it away rather than sawing it up.

hope all have a good and warm holiday! stay safe on them icy roads. see you next week, and don't forget all those who ain't got nuff to eat. i may go get that local glasser SC to gut for parts...maybe offer to help the guy build his trailer in exch for the hull.... but it will have to wait til the Admiral returns to ABQ.

Sadly, that local early-60s Starcraft glasser seems to have been sold....pity, as I was hoping to huckster the jetson light and emblems.

Contrary to popular opinion, I actually do work on the Starcraft from time to time. I feel a bit silly posting these but hey, progress is progress be it ever so humble. Y’all may recall that my transom cap was hashed from the bowing of the rotted transom, so I had to bend it back into shape. This left a bunch of spots along the top where the aluminum of the cap was looking the worse for wear due to mucho flexion.

Now we’re at the stage of trying to do “body work” on those spots, using JBweld for bondo. It has taken 3 rounds since I’m trying not to add too much in any one shot to keep it easy to sand.

In this one pic, you can see how i’m using the coffee stir stick to press it into the crevasses and scrape off as much excess as possible so I don’t have to sand it off later.

here’s what it looked like after it cured,

and after sanding....I may do one more round, or may just call it good at this point since the white paint and outboard motor will hide most of the remaining imperfections.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

other than that, I’ve been trying to get the console and other woodwork sanded and varnished....in many spots, my epoxy work left drips and random booboos I don’t want to look at forever, and it all needs to be sanded down to give a good surface for varnish adhesion.

I’ve been trying mixing the varnish (Minwax Helmsman polyurethane) 1/3 gloss, 1/3 satin, and 1/3 mineral spirits, and the results so far have been breathtaking compared to my earlier efforts. The first coat, I hadn’t stirred the satin varnish enough to mix in the flattening agent, so it looked like glass when it dried.....apparently, thinning it this much really lets it flow out, and it just looks like a solid sheet when done. I was going to spray the console and other large areas but by doing this (AND using a high quality foam brush instead of the 10-for-$2 cheepies I’d used before) it's giving me a good enough finish that spraying is looking superfluous.

Looks great B2... and glad to see that jb weld can be used for transom cap work as well... hey I used PL on my wife's car to fill the gaping holes above the wheel wells this fall --- then put jb over top and sanded smooth... a little color matched paint and the dealership guys thought the car looked to be in great shape! They didn't ask if I had added a half a tube of PL and JB weld to the wheel wells --- I had a momentary bout of amnesia --- but hey, it works!

Wood work looks awesome man!!!

Looking good B2, what's the reason for mixing Satin and Gloss, because you had a can of each or you couldn't get Semi Gloss?

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

yeah, Glen, you got it exactly right....glossy is too glossy and satin is too matte. i've been using a little take-out salsa tub for a measuring cup so i can be sure to get the mix even from batch to batch......would be a bummer if one side of the console was glossier than the others! one trade-off about mixing it this thin is that i have to lay the surface to be varnished almost perfectly horizontal or it will run, so the console has to be done one side at a time.

and i even had a day to sling some more varnish, since fuel pump on the Taco de Pescado died yesterday so i had an unplanned day off. this is only the 2d bit of unscheduled maintenance i've had to do in 183K miles so i can't complain, and this is right about when you'd normally expect a Jap vehicle fuel pump to die. Toy dlr quotes $433 for the whole "assembly (pump, bracketry, filter screen, and fuel level sender) so i'm just going to get the correct Denso pump for about 100 at NAPA and swap it in. never dropped a fuel tank on modern EFI vehicle before, and doing so was valuable training for my work....since we deal with lots of dope-in-the-gas-tank-at-border cases, it's always good to know what's involved in doing it and how long it takes. your friendly cartel commonly gets a spare gas tank, pre-loads it, then swaps it on in an hour or 2, in some cases without the owner's knowledge. hardest part was figuring out how to disconnect the electrical connectors w/o damage, when you can't see them. all of which makes plumbing boat fuel system seem really simple........

It looks like the spar varnish mixing worked as planned, B2. Nice even gloss or semi-gloss in the pics.

Electric fuel pumps! What a pain! I R&R'ed my Jeep pump - twice. The first time was no fun, but the second one died right after I filled the tank and I could only siphon about 5 gallons out. Both times I kept asking myself why Jeep didn't put an access plate over the pump in the floor. I think the Starcraft designer of the trapped dashboard wood switched over to car body design. :devilish:

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

maybe it was so it would take longer to load it with contraband? seriously, it mostly has to do with build costs, esp given that we're talking a Chrysler corp product. some cars do have a hatch beneath trunk floor. my tank was about 3/4 full, and what helped massively with the job was the Harbor Fright transmission jack.

i'm stalled on varnishing due to being out of foambrushes but will hopefully get back on it tonight. and i have a tempo-tenant living on my back 40 in a motor home, so i should be able to finally get the transom bolts tightened by this weekend, with someone to hold the other side.

Nice to progress B, the mixed satin/gloss is a good idea, esp when you have both & want the look of semi...

Okay B2 I couldn't let this one slip by. So how did the ad read when you were looking for a tenant!!!

RV spot available free rent all you have to do is hold my transom nuts :D

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

touche, senor.

but actually, this is the guy who owns the motor home i've been storing on the back 40 for months. he's retired and on SS disab, and i'm letting him stay there for an indeterminate period so he can save some money and get back on his feet. he actually used to be a Brit car mechanic and i'm going to talk to him about maybe hiring him to help me with reassembling my Curse o' Blighty (1975 MGB, truly their revenge for 1776ish events) since i have way more projects than time.

only a little progress last night, nada pic worthy....a little paint on side panel base rails, glued corner molding onto the STARCHIEF side panels and that's it. in cold weather, i store the paint and item to be painted inside near the heater and then run outside just long enough to spray and purge the can, so i don't fume up the house too much. the Rusto "high perf enamel" really has some serious VOCs.

No fishing. :blue: Enjoy the free time with The Empress (as long as you sneak a little Holiner time in :)).

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, B. Make a resolution to splash this year, although I know that's at the top of the list already. Forget the rest of the resolutions. :D
