The console is da bomb, B. Nice plan for upgradability, too. Sounds like you need to wear oyster shuckin' gloves. And stop buying old Merc parts for your fridge. $140 cap is in range for my oldie.

Keep the good work up! :D

Nice progress B2. Do you have a plan for ventilation of gas fumes in the console? - Grandad

Grandad--i figured they'd just burn off when i flipped a switch :lol::eek:

serioously, i was going to install a vent i scavenged from a glasser donor, but this filler cap incorporates a vent into it, so i have one less hole to drill. look closely at the pix and you can see the vent hose running up next to the fill hose. pretty slick arrangement. now we'll see if the plastic holds up to sun and modern octane-enhancers.....

this wiring work seems to be going slow n tedious, but i just looked at one of my pix from last weekend and was pleasantly surprised to see how far i've gotten since then. more pix manana. i also set up a bus bar for everything that will be wired into the running light circuit (lighting on gauges, compass, etc) and will likely do the same for everything on the interior-light circuit. now i'm at the point of figuring out how to interface the console wires with the wires under floor....will probably add a couple of screw-terminal blocks so i can disconnect everything near entry into console.

I don't want to be a wet blanket on your design B2, but I'm still concerned with your fuel tank location. Because this is so important for your safety. I'm gonna say my piece. Unless I missed something somewhere, this will be a center console. If I'm reading this right, you plan to bring a dockside fuel hose aboard and fill the tank as any spillage and fumes accumulate below the gunnel level. Even when not fueling, the tank is vented to the interior of the boat. Apart from the safety aspect, putting a tarp over your boat will also trap fumes and make your vessel stink like the inside of a gas tank. Sorry, but now's the time to reconsider. - Grandad
USCG Recommendations from Fuel Systems - Equipment Standards
"The fuel tank vent outlet fitting must be located so that overflowing fuel coming out of the vent at a rate of up to 2 gallons per minute will not enter the boat. This requirement may involve deck design, cockpit coaming design, air vent location, hawsehole design for underdeck cleating of lines and any other opening where fuel would overflow into the boat. Deck joints in riveted metal decks, or wooden decks, could provide a path for fuel to flow to the boats interior unless they are caulked to resist such fuel leakage."

ouch. no, i appreciate any and all constructive criticism. jeers are fine too....i figure i've done something to improve the universe if i brighten someone's day with my clown-dom (intentional or mostly otherwise). :)

you make really valid points there. hadn't thought about either of those issues. i was originally going to put the tank under the bow cap, with filler on top of the cap and vent coming through the side of hull, but liked the mass centralization of putting it dead center. guess i need to go back to the bow plan.

this will actually simplify my console massively, as working the steering cable, fuel hose, and all wires past the tank so i could route em through floor of console into conduit below was going to be a Challenge. it still will be even without the tank, but this solves one of my major headaches (figured i was going to have to take the steering cable out through side of console and was worried about how to water seal the angled hole without it looking too clunky or crude. i'll go see if i have another hunk of cool wood to cover the filler hole.

Thanks for taking the time to look that up and write the post!

Hey B2 wiring looks real good I agree with Grandad on the fuel tank. Plus if you move it up to the bow you can ask Jason for ideas on putting the batteries in the spot where the tank was.:D:facepalm:

That Jason, he got some good ideas for everything. i tell ya, even the speed at which he works on his boats has a purpose....by the time he's done, the polar caps will have melted and there will be lots more water to go boating in!

maybe by that time, i'll have the console wiring done.......

I should have no trouble getting my rig done for the polar ice cap melt off.

Unless I have another delay or new boat project show up, then it'll be after that:facepalm:

B2 that is some fancy wiring. Mine wiring looks like a nest made by a drunk mouse.

BTW - I am fabricating a battery holder located on a bimini top that will free up interior boat space. The fabrication is going slowly due to the fact I made a joke about battery placement that offended Jas. Let's just say I have a 12v deep cycle located in a place that makes walking painful and I have to use a hoist to get in and out of the boat. No worries as I am sure it will pass. At first I found the ordeal a bit shocking but in the end it will all work out.

Otte--at one point, i actually was contemplating mounting a big Shorai Li-Ion battery up high, so i'd have VHF and bilge pumpage right up til it all slipped beneath the waves.....

me, i'm mostly pretty safe from Jas.....several thousand miles between us, and many Starcrafts in that distance to get him distracted before he gets here.....

The tank-ectomy on the console was easy, and you can see how much easier this will make routing wires etc. Now I just gotta strap tank down securely in its new home and cut holes for filler and vent in hull.

Here you can see the results of Smart Guy working too late. While I’m happy with the “wings” I made to hold the VHF in place in the fore-aft plane, the shelf I made to support it also came out nicely.....but would support the radio better if it was UNDER it rather than ABOVE it

the dorm fridge in its new home, waiting patiently til I can get the transom done

Been mostly working inside lately as mosquito season is here. But I’m at the point where I really need to do a test fit on the console and determine its exact location in the boat before I can finish the console wiring....then lift it back out so I can finish the stuff under the floor.

I hit one more snag last night...learned that I need to keep my compass at least 12" from fuel flow meter or it will affect compass reading, so I’ll have to re-engineer where I put the compass.....I don’t want to have to choose between knowing where I am and knowing whether I have enough fuel to get home!

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

sorry about the relative dearth of pics....most of what i've been doing lately is wiring work and it's hard to make pics of that look exciting. i have furlough this Friday and am staying in town this weekend, so i hope to make lots of progress on the old crock before we fly out to Ca next week.

Nice job B2!!! Just getting caught back up... lots of progress despite the monsoon season and the skeeders!

Sorry you had to do a tank-ectomy... but the right thing to do....

"hey, what is this wet thing on my shoulders? oh, it's a blanket...." you kidding? i owe you a fishing trip for helping keep me from blowing myself up (and a myriad of lesser ills due to fuel spillage inside the boat). the guy at the fuel dock in San Carlos is pretty careful, but in lots of places in Baja and i suspect the rest of third world, you're fueling from barrels or jerrycans and who knows how careful people are going to be.

no boat progress last night....got home early from work due to having to go in early, had 2 beers and a Benadryl and lay down for a nap while it cooled down below 99 degrees, and that were all she wrote. missed 2 calls from the Admiral, so not only did i make no boat progress, i'm in trouble wit Da Chief...she worries that i'm out spending money on putas other than the tin kind......

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Gents!

Been a few, but I’ve been hard at work on the barco. Another glut of pix and blather is about to follow.....I’ll have to look back at the pix to keep track of what all I’ve gotten done.

I decided that the sealed-beam incandescent lights for the headlights just weren’t going to cut it given the huge amp draw compared to wimpy 9 amp alternator output. So I ordered a set of these from Northern: TruckStar 12-24 Volt LED Flood Light - Clear, Round, 4in., 1350 Lumens, Model# 1492115 | LED Automotive Work Lights| Northern Tool + Equipment

the plan is to install these in the existing cast-aluminum housing for the docking lights and jettison the “eyeballs” or use em elsewhere. Surely a bottom feeder like me can figure out a use for these! Once the cast-aluminum hunk is remounted on the boat, I’ll install 1/4" lexan covers over the whole 9 yards and hold em on with a jillion #6x1/2" SS panheads and Lexcel caulk. Anyone have any suggestions for how to cut curves in Lexan?

transom cap is more or less fixed and reinstalled. I used wirebrush in the angle grinder to roughen/clean both surfaces, then solvent wipe and Jbweld between the flat-bar reinforcement inside the cap and the cap itself. Then more solvent to clean up the squeezed out JB before I dropped it onto trans so it didn't get glued in place. Worked it down into place with aid of two 3' bar clamps and the dead blow hammer

then drilled new holes at a downward angle into transom, gooped some #4 flathead screws with #6 washers so they can sit neatly at a slight angle, and called it good. I still need to do the “body work” starring JB as bondo to fill the crevasses and gouges, and then paint it all. If I do a 2d round of Durabak, this will get covered in that.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

after much agonizing on the issue, since I already have the transom pad wood done and epoxied, I decided to ditch it and just go with the big slab of 5/16" T6 instead of using both.

Oops, now I see why this was so fun to drill......T651?this is the stuff they make dirt bike sprockets out of.

also got all the transom bolts in place and ready for the ?4200 orgy?.....found that a visegrip on outside of bolts to keep em from turning is good substitute for a helper, altho you do get plenty of exercise climbing in and out of boat!
