NorCal you say.... Look for property in the state of Jefferson

Arcata & Eureka have really rugged coasts but I know where the free from the confines of a top beach is :D

The Humboldt State Tsunami race is usually 'interesting'. Arcata is just south of where the Tsunami fishing boat from Japan washed up in Crescent City back in April.

Well that sucks, but on the bright side it sounds like you are planning on making lemonade out of the lemons. I just checked some temps - the highs in Brookings, OR are lower than the lows for El Armpit. Better pack some woolies. :watermelon:

Once you get the Chrysler hung and the other stuff on the transom, the blemishes will disappear.

thanx guys. I figure that from 20' away, it will look OK.

[/IMG]Now I guess I need to get on painting the rest of the boat.....plan is to try to do it on the trailer, by rolling it first to one side and then the other and not worrying too much about the very bottom/keel area since that will get hashed pronto anyway.

Confirmed that with the floor in place, no way the 9 Gallon tank FOR KICKER WILL FIT UNDER SPLASHWELL. Oops. So I’ll use a 6 under there and keep a spare 6 somewhere in boat, likely under bow.

Sorry about blurry pic.
P10105642.jpg
[/IMG]This was supposed to show where I used a flame cutter on the die grinder to trim off the casting line on transom bracket of outboard, and thus gain back the 1/16" I lost due to the reinforcement under the transom cap.

got one bilge pump mounted, but realized I needed to re-engineer the mount for the big one....it needs a dedicated “shelf” secured between the knee brace and stringer due to the weight. This should get done tonight....another hunk of Lone Star gives its all that the Holiner may live. Speaking of Lone Star.....feast your eyes on my bottom feeder chine reinforcement plates, on the hoof...

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

so, remember all my endeavors to make up a beveled ring to angle the fuel filler, then epoxy and varnish it? After I get this all done, I see a Perko angled filler cap WITH incorporated vent outlet, for $27, that puts the hose at a far greater angle. So I’ll be using this instead.

The sad tale of the dorm fridge: before you chain it to a tree for support while you redo the transom, be sure the tree isn’t about to fall over. I’ll have to use the engine crane to hoist it to where I can get it on appliance dolly, then move it to upper driveway so I can reinstall on boat. Hoping nothing super critical/expensive got smashed in the fall.....
P10105652.jpg
[/IMG]

Also did a bunch of work on the console. Now that it’s nicely glassed on the inside, I’m reinstalling the interior and plumbing in the tank.
P1010563.jpg
[/IMG] Tank area ended up pretty tight despite measuring twice, but I think it will fit even with hydrocarbon swell. The retaining strap may not be necessary. Realized I’m going to have to move all the electrics to one side, though, to be able to get batteries in place with them mounted, so I’ll have to drill another 8 holes. Wish I’d realized this before I drilled out the resin that had filled the existing holes!

Still need to work out the routing on how to get the steering cable, fuel line, battery cables, and wires from inside console to conduit under deck. Plan is to get console mostly ready to install and then sand and spray the varnish on the exterior right before I stick it into the boat for final assembly. It’s already so heavy that it’s going to take at least 2 people to lift it into boat and it’s nowhere near fully assembled.

I guess that’s about up to where I’m currently at. Having it ready for the July 4 trip is looking less likely... :embarassed: But we are making progress.

You are talking 7/4/14 aren't you? If you mean 7/4/13, you need a new calendar. :)

Those dorm fridges are powerful. Able to knock over trees in a single bound. Yikes, hope no damage from the tumble.

How many cases of beer to get the console up in the boat? If you wrestle the engine hoist in the Taco bed, could you get it high enough to get it in the boat? Maybe a staged lift, into the truck bed first and then into the boat.

Great progress B2, I'm starting to think I should of kept that stump puller Dorm Fridge I gave Gibbles. LOL So how long did it take you to get all those bolts to just the right position to snap that artsy photo :D

nah, i was just being facetious about my, ahem, measured progress. actually canceled that trip so i'd have the vacation hours for a scouting trip to the PNW next month.

i never thought about the Chrysler's abilities to clear brush n trees before.....

actually, once i get it onto the dolly, i can get it to upper drive, where i can sling it from carport with comealong and thence hoist it onto transom. biggest issue will be making and installing a better sling than i had for removal, so i can lift it high enough. oh yeah, and ordering a steering cable first so i don't join the ranks of those who learned the hard way about hooking up steering BEFORE dropping motor on..........(and a big THANK YOU to those who have posted their pitfall in this regard, cuz i would have for sure fallen into it if i didn't know about this...))

You sure don't want to move that fridge around twice. :watermelon: I played around with blocks under the trailer jack to get my transom low enough to get the motor on/off. PITA. Good to plan ahea XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Xd.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

a little progress this week, but left camera at home so no pix til Monday. got the tank plumbed into the console and the electrics moved and partially connected. hopefully i can get most of the console wiring done this weekend. the monsoons are here, so we're getting our entire year's worth of rain in a few weeks, so i've mostly been working inside (aside from trying to get supportage for the 3 boat covers figured out and troubleshot).

learned one thing bout Murphy this week: if you use the same hunk of 3/4" ply scrap as a backer (so you don't splinter the back side of console plywood when the drill bit comes through) that you've used before for same purpose, His Murphness will ensure that your drill bit falls right into one of the previous holes so it comes right on through that 3/4" plywood and another 3/4" into the base of your palm. my doc loves me cuz he says i always bring him more entertaining stuff than the usual run of kids with colds......

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

So when you notified the Admiral about the injury, had you been drilled or merely screwed? <<---No pix, no happen :watermelon:

Yeah yeah lost my camera cord....

Be safe & keep the boats tethered during the monsoons.

this is the sort of booboo that keeps oozing blood for days, so i've left my mark on a few client files

"not to worry, guys, i'm AIDS free and the Hep C is in remission....."

given the 250 miles between our residences currently, i do not use the word "screwed" lest she get the wrong idea

B2 - You have truly put your blood, sweat and tears in the Holiner. And a few splashes at work, too. As long as your DNA doesn't get confused with your clients, you might be OK. :watermelon:

Yikes, come on now B2, your kinda helping Murphy do his job right there. There's no reason to be making it any easier for him. Hope the hand heals fast. CSI would have a real time sweeping the Holiner for DNA.lol

Sorry to hear about your hand but it does put an interesting twist in the hole project.

Hullo all. Inching along as usual on the Holiner. Summer monsoon means I have to do some work every eve on bailing water out of covers an the 3 boats.

I?m almost ready to put the transom cap back on for good so I can hang the motor, but it?s been raining every day and I want to wait til space between transom skin and wood dries out a bit.

So I?ve been mostly working inside on the console. The incredibly tedious job of wiring a boat from scratch.....but I want to get it right the first time! No fun rewiring at sea.....

Not too much to describe about this. I?m trying to set it up so the dash will be removable with minimum of effort in case I need to troubleshoot or want to add stuff (like oil pressure and water temp gauges if I get a 4 stroke at some point)

got the hoses for the fuel filler and vent plumbed in....that dang filler hose doesn?t like to bend even a little bit. Anyone ever tried softening it with a heat gun before bending it into position? Oh, and cuidado when cutting the stuff. I KNEw about the reinforcement wires but still managed to cut my hand open on one. Oh well, a nice match for the spot where I drilled the hole in palm.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

in that last pic, you can see the bus bars i set up for the top-of-console electronix.....so i can add whatever i want later. it's basically a 30 amp circuit, capable of supporting the kind of sonar that will see all the way into the mantle of the earth..... the ground one is aluminum; the hot one is brass, raised off its base with two #10 nylock nuts acting as standoffs, so i can slip the split silicone tubing over it.

here's a close up

did get the ole dorm fridge hoisted and moved around to friendlier climes, not much help from the engine hoist. Looks like no major damage from the fall......distrib cap was smashed, but its pricey $140 self already needed to be replaced.

That's a fine wiring job B2...nice-n-tidy!
