Re: Starcraft on C-list/ebay!

Some sellers amaze me with their rude and condescending ads, does he think he is doing people a favor by listing this. If someone offered him $900 for that POS he should consider himself lucky. People who refuse text/email also annoy me (unless they don't have access to it).

I have no problem calling these people, when I get off work, at midnight, sometimes 2:15 am.

Hey, I'm working 12 hour shifts, and have no phone access once I enter the building. :)

For 17.5 K, she better look like she came off the showroom floor this morning and never got wet. Even the accessories can't account for the price.

I'm guessing I'll have maybe $3Kish into mine when all said and done. But that gives me new transom/deck/vinyl/wood/paint/gauges/electronics/gear/yadayada.

Course that estimate may be a little low if I....

Budget, Schudget! Just numbers on a piece of paper. :D Yeah, the 496 blows the heck out of the numbers on that piece of paper.

Wonder if the 470 can be used for the core?

This is a most dangerous thread, and should be avoided... now im tempted to buy the big hard top!! ;) $900 does not seem to be bad for her with a tandem trailer. I

I would then almost own a boat like my username.... shoot, an email of inquiry was just sent from my account. .. oops ;) Might sell the AC to fund it... nothing like following our illustrious example in trading up! :)

Sounds like the 188HP has not been started for 6 years though he turned it over by hand last week. From the picture it looks like the water jackets are cracked due to the rust lines. The interior has been nicely gutted and looks like its ready to rebuild. Does anyone have a guesstimation as to how much it would cost to repower with a rebuild? There might be a donor glasser, but I have seen very few V8's. Would the outdrive be compatible with a GM engine?

From the looks of it, the cabin bulkhead has been removed & the helm moved forward:

Because it looks like there's daylight behind the captain in the original CL ad pix:

How much of it's been gutted, more then the pix he sent w/ the motor pix?

All the other pics he sent were of the engine. It looks like a Chieftain Express but I agree, it looks like the helm was moved forward.

Yah, I'd be thinking total transplant with a donor glasser. I have been looking for those a little bit and am seeing candidates with V8's in the $3500 to $5500 range. I'm need to score one about half that.

Patience is the key to that game eh:thumb:

the idea of the donor is that you take the boat you don't want for the low cost of a decent motor......if you don't want the boat and all the hassles, just buy a motor....heck I think youd be way better off buying an old tired motor for $300 or so and rebuilding it... then you know its condition and didn't pay and cross your fingers. unless youd like to cut up a glasser and fix a trailer.....bob

Re: Starcraft on C-list/ebay!

just buy a motor....

That's in most cases the more expensive route.

See, if you score a nasty glasser for say, $2K, sell the trailer for say $500. You'd be into the engine for roughly $1500. To rebuild an old one would be about the same (or more).

Here's the difference...

That nasty glasser will also have an outdrive, complete transom assembly, steering controls, throttle controls, windshield, fittings, fuel tank, gauges, bow rails, yadayada....

That old tired motor won't come with any of that! Moreover, to complete the driveline (outdrive, transom assembly, controls) you'd easily be at the $3K mark.

So ya, in most cases, the donor route is the best.

The exception: Many times a guy who neglects his boat hull will also be neglecting his driveline. And there's the trick. Finding the trashed plastic hull with the solid heart for little cheddar$.

the "another beat up boat" sitting in the yard for a year while the stripping takes place, plus all the cutting up and saving of parts you will never use( really now will they fit your other boats??), plus all the work needed to make a trailer WORTH $500, and in the end you QUESTION the motors actual condition has to have a "cost" that needs to be figured in. cut the baggage....usually you get the outdrive on a motor for sale....maybe not the inside mounts or hardware, but you have that.....don't you? bob
