We got a runner. :D Sounds real good, snal. Little bit of wiring to figure out, but a darn good start.

Now the next big question - Milk shake oil?

The Starmada taught the NSA. How do you think we find these lovely ladies?

With an unknown motor, I would have been checking as soon as she shut off. But no glop in the oil! :D

Engine sounds fine. A major milestone knowing you don't have to start looking for a donor engine.

I'll still probably go look at a donor today. Mainly for the outdrive, but it also has the same engine for a spare. I don't think I should pass it up for $300 if the outdrive looks good. Actually, the boat is a 1976 19' Glassmaster that doesn't look half bad...needs seats and stuff, and it's not aluminum. It's some sort of fiber-type material that's smooth on the outside, rough on the inside, and causes itching :)

Yep, it's nice now that I know that the engine seems to be fine. This takes the "iffyness" out of the project as I was teetering between I/O and outboard power.

I don't remember what your outdrive problem is, but if you can get a donor for 3 bills (asking ?) that only itches during the teardown/disposal work, well that's OK. :) It's nice to have some handy spares in the garage.

Don't exactly know what the problem is, but she wouldn't go into forward gear. Cable to controls was fine. I was told that it worked fine and had a new water pump impeller and was only used a few times since, but the last time she was wet was in 2007.

A lot of times the shift shaft get moved during the water pump fix. Wonder it's as simple as that? You can check the shifting by rotating the shift shaft on the lower to see if you get get F-N-R. I see that often in the MC forum where guys re-do the pump and can't get all the gears. Re-sync the shifter/shaft and usually takes care of the problem as long as the guts in the lower are OK.

Can I remove the lower while in neutral? Right now the whole outdrive and gimbal is removed as a unit since I could not get it to go into forward gear.

Yeah it would be a bear getting that outdrive off there without it being in forward gear. The shift shoe hangs on and you would most likely break something trying. Spin the prop while manually trying to shift and if that don't work, take the gear case off the lower and the upper half should come off the outer mount then.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

I don't know if I would give up on the present setup.
The engine is running and that's great. I would remove the head and the pan for gaskets and possibly run a hone through it and install some new rings is it measures up. But I've seen many engines run fine with fractured rings so removing the head isn't something I would skip, if I was going to keep the motor.
You may pull the head and find its time for a rebuild. Then maybe its time for a newer repower.

I still haven't done a compression test, if that's not good then I'll tear it down. If it's good...I'll run it as is.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

Well, the donor boat was a POS...wouldn't go into either gear, hull was junk, manifold had a freeze crack in it, trailer was nice but the tires wouldn't have made it to my place.
Oh well.

You can drop the lower in any gear. The problem is getting it back together. You can be in F or R, but F is much easier. N is almost impossible unless the stars and shift shaft and drive shaft happen stay in alignment. They never do and I'm thinking this is what has happened to snal's gears. If it was working fine until the impeller was changed, that's exactly what happened. Using a pair of pliers, you can shift the lower to F. Why didn't Merc key the shift shaft so it can only go together one way?

If it was working OK after the impeller change, well ignore most of what I just said.

Sorry the donor was not up to donor quality, snal. Hope you at least had a nice drive. :blue:

Re: Starcraft Islander project

Tore into the outdrive this weekend. Dropped the lower, found that the final shift cable was frozen up, which is why it wouldn't go into forward gear.
After studying the outdrive a bit, I've decided to ditch the I/O setup and go OUTBOARD!

Not sure at this point if I'll simply build a motor well and cut the transom....or build an outboard bracket

So, in an effort to choose HP...does anyone know what the HP at the prop might be for the original 165 hp engine?
Not sure at this point if I'll go with a new outboard or used...depends on what deal comes around.
My financial focus now is on my youngest daughter's wedding (she just got engaged!). I have a power-point presentation ready to show her...shows the timeline for my project completion comparing a big wedding to a justice of the peace thing :).
