Olympic spirit/The Canadian Spirit-
Coolest, humbling thing so far, CDN coach gives a Russian skier a new ski to replace his broken ski he was dragging mid race just so he had dignity when he crossed the finish line.

He came in last but so what.
More random acts of kindness go a long way.

Happened before with a ski pole.
That was equally classy.

Personally, the biggest attraction to this years Olympics are the pictures of the Russian women. I like their curling team.
OK, serious question. Other than this ^^^^^ obvious reason, why isn't Curling coed? Seems like the perfect sport to be for both sexes. Strength doesn't matter, speed doesn't matter, endurance doesn't matter, so why not?

may get trashed for this.....but curling is no more of a sport than lawn bowling or ribbon tossing, the olympics were supposed to be for athletes. jmo

I will answer your question with a question...would you really want it to be coed?

Yes....it's a game! But then again, it's called Olympic Games...not Olympic sports! :)

In the summer games archery is an event. You could be a fat slob and win the archery gold medal!

There are many competitions for mixed teams, but the fact is that strength, speed, and endurance do very much matter.
If you've ever swept a curling rock, you'll appreciate how draining it is.
Top curlers can sweep a rock 12 feet further than without sweeping. The mix of adjusting both weight and amount of sweeping, can alter the path of the rock dramatically....allowing some near impossible shots.

Men have a great advantage over women.

When you are as fit, skilled, and coordinated as ANY curler on the Olympic ice, get back to us. :)

I beg to differ Bruce, I was a competitive archer for over 15 years and won quite a few tournaments, believe me, if you are a fat slob, you are not going to win tournaments. It take far more than you know to stand up there and shoot.

I was thinking for summer Olympics, Horses, shooting and archery as other examples of sports that could be coed. I am not asking for coed sports, but I am asking why they aren't. I submit that a world class Curling broom girl is as effective as a world class broom guy. I am sure Frank is right, but I fail to see it.

Re: SOCHI Olympics anyone?

It always seems that some games or sports are in question if they belong in something arguably rooted in fitness...or maybe not?....not sure really.
Sort of like Football being accepted as a sport (which it is)...but actually only having about 11 or 12 minutes of actual play and action. I'm not sure if even half of the players could be called athletes in comparison to soccer, basketball or hockey, etc...but it is always a controversy.....and I'm not sure about baseball either from a fitness standpoint...although I really like the game.
As for this Olympics it looks like a lot of the venue problems have settle down and we are getting in the 'meat' of the games.
U.S (hockey) team really thumped the Slovakians today 7-1 and the Russians hit the Slovenians 5-2....no surprises in either of those games.
We are up next against Norway and that game is on deck in about 1/2 hr I think!!

Equestrian IS coed. After all, the real athlete there is the one with 4 legs.

Re: SOCHI Olympics anyone?

I have a question, how popular is curling in Canada and northern US? Are there actual special curling areas that you do this in or do you just go to an ice rink somewhere?

This Californian is clueless about such things.

Re: SOCHI Olympics anyone?

There's all kinds of clubs and special curling rinks up here......

Here's Mn clubs:
MN Clubs

And WI:
Wisconsin Curling Club Directory | Wisconsin State Curling Association

It's a big deal, looks kinda fun to me.......... Shuffleboard on ice, per say. Maybe I'm getting old......

A game yes, but more of a social event.

In the big "FUN" bonspiels its nothing to see one team try and get the other team hammered before the game, then the real fun starts.
