Finally broke down and got one. Don't care about the stuff so much, but it's always bugged me a little when I go on my float trips that the admiral and vice admiral (when she doesn't go with me) are home alone and can't even get my cell phone. I've looked into them on and off for the better part of a year. Every time I talked to a different company I'd get the hard sell and constant follow up calls, but I looked at Frontpoint and they don't seem to be quite so obnoxious. We'll see how it goes.

I installed my own. I currently only have sirens but the people breaking in don't know that. Typically in my area, you can get monitoring for $15/month if you have your own hardware.

Re: Security Systems

I've never had anything but bad experiences with them.

False alarms, charges for false alarms, etc.

Not to mention a "visitor" of which I approve enters a wrong code and all hell breaks lose. Cost me hundreds, over the years.

If somebody wants what I have that bad, they can have it.

As far as the Admirals safety. She is now "aware" and armed. The "aware" part was the hardest.

This is the self installed kind, which is one thing I like about it.

Not trying to be smart-a*** at all, but if your Admiral heard something downstairs while you are on a float trip, her first call should NOT be to your cell phone.

That may fall into Fleetwin's "aware" bucket. ;)

As this has been my source of income for 38 years, I will refrain from replying to comments, good and bad mentioned. I will say but 1 thing. You ALWAYS will get what you paid for. If you pay the lowest price, you get.......

What hardware is your favorite? My system is getting a little bit older. Its a DSC system I installed over 10 years ago.

Agreed. My point was I am completely incommunicado for three days. This is a peace of mind thing.

Any general thoughts regarding Frontpoint? They seem to be pretty well regarded, but I'm not exactly an expert.

Don't have any alarms but installed several cameras. Hid all the wires and the recorder is in a hidden area, not to say they couldn't find it, but most crooks are snatch and grab. Locks are made to keep an honest person honest. Cameras will give the insurance and cops something to go on after the fact.

Re: Security Systems

I installed a state of the art system a few years ago, it includes A sign near the driveway, work boots in plain sight by the back door, next to the hanging dog leashes, and dog bowls on the ground.

Pricker bushes around the windows and motion lights with randomized patterns.

I do have some cameras as well.

LOL. We do have Cookie the twelve pound terror. Nobody's getting anywhere near us if she has anything to say about it.

Re: Security Systems

We have a full security system at our lake house with sirens, door sensors, smoke alarm, etc. Problem is I don't know the passcode to arm or disarm it. It is in passive mode where it simply announces when a door opens. I would like to at least get the siren to work in the event of a break in.

I'm sure there is a way of resetting it. Need to get in touch with the manufacture. Many have a button on the inside which is held in while a pass code is entered.

Interesting. I did a bit of internet searching and the company was bought by another company and now the system is way obsolete and the manufacturer is defunct. The house was an estate hence nobody to ask but there are several numbers scrawled on the alarm manual but honestly I don't know what they are really for. I'm afraid to even start punching in numbers and having the alarm go off or really screw something up. The system is somewhere from the late 1990's. The upshot I suppose it the house is Cat 5 wired for a replacement at some point. I just really want to not spend money on a new alarm.

Call some local security companies and ask if they have any knowledge of your system. If they respond with a yes, ask what it will take to have them come out and learn you something. I'm guessing some folks that use to work with your system may have went to work with newer ones later. They all work the same way for the most part. If all calls are answered with no and I would like to sell you, well you tried

Re: Security Systems

Aspeck, I like that one. Coop, I cannot comment on Frontpoint as I have never come across that company. I do not think they are in my area. Bruce, DSC is a Canadian company that have been around since the late 70s. I know a few of the guys that started the company as they came from other companies I dealt with at the time. They are now worldwide. I have used DSC products since their formation. I have always considered them the Chevy of the alarm industry, never great but is reliable and gets the job done. I have never had much faith in their motion sensors but they do sell a lot, mostly because of price. Stay far away....no run far away from their wireless products. They continuously have problems, get revamped, only to fail again. I have used a lot of Napco product which is out of New York. Solid product but a bit more expensive. Great panels, wireless , motions etc. They have been around since before I got into the business. Currently I am using Interlogics. Formerly it was G.E. until Warren Buffet decided that G.E. needed less diversification. Solid products from a conglomeration of companies such as ITI, Sentrol, Caddx, Moose and other top name companies that G.E. bought up to get a solid hold on the industry. Using this line with Alarm.com (check them out on the web) gives all the options like remote view cameras, remote temperature control, door lock control, light control, etc. from your smart phone. Neat stuff and great support.
Remember guys, if your going to deal with an alarm company, you are not buying a system, your buying a service. If they are not there to give you the service when you need it, no matter how good the product, it's not worth a plugged nickel.

Re: Security Systems

The absolute best security system is,,, an 80 - 100 lb. dog. Will continue to work perfectly if the power goes out and the phone lines die. :D

I say that only half kidding. We live in a very rural area (town is 20 miles away and closest neighbor is 3 miles or so) and I often have to travel and leave the Admiral here alone, which was something she was terrified of until we got our German Shepard's and taught them how to behave in the house. The chance of someone being able to get in the house without the dogs sounding the alarm and being attacked? Absolute zero. Your warning siren will never go on the offensive to protect your wife...

I think that in another thread you detailed one of the downsides of German Shepherds.... :)
But I didn't get the sense that you were really complaining.
A little shoveling from time to time is worth the peace of mind that they give back! ;)

Re: Security Systems

when I lived in St Louis, the cop told me after my third break in the best deterrence is a dog; size doesn't matter. Next best thing is a sign in the yard - go have one made and make up a company name.

That said, my company bought LifeShield and i'm installing soon.
