I have Mariner 75 HP outboard engine and one day it just stopped with no warning and now wont start, it will turn over but just wont start. I am an electrician anyway so I have been through the manual and performed all the tests but when I resistance test the staor coil, it should be between 3600 and 4200 ohms. When I test it, it reads between these figures for about 30 secs but then creeps up over 4200. Is this correct because it is a coil?

Also the rectifier doesnt read the results stated in the manual but this is just for the battery charge function, so I am thinking even if this is faulty the engine should still start the battery is fully charged.

Re: Testing Stator

My book says if the stator is mounted on the engine the black lead should be grounded to the powerhead. I can see a situation where maybe the magnets in the flywheel could causing a creeping you describe.

Did you first verify you had no spark? Nothing better than visually seeing a blue arc to set the mind at ease.

Re: Testing Stator

I have tested the spark by holding the plug against the body of the engine and looks ok.
