Mower shooting gas everywhere

I have a Kohler engine on a Toro mower. When I turn the key it takes about 5 seconds for the engine to turnover. That is, when I turn the key nothing happens for 5 seconds. Meanwhile I can hear the sound of squirting gas being pumped. I took the air filter off and started the engine. A large amount of gas came splashing out of the air inlet hole. What?s going on? The battery is fully charged fairly new and reads 12.6 volts.
Thanks for the help

Electric fuel pump?????
sounds like the electric fuel pump is pushing the floats needle off the seat.
But the question is why is your starter taking so long to engage, did you clean all the conections??
Remember all dc connections must be clean and tight or you get high resistance and that could be your starting issue.
And it looks like the air cleaner has seen better days. :)
