I have an alpha 1 mr mercruiser, I changed the water pump. I did that all right but reassembling was an issue. The instructions I printed off the internet are confusing. Here is the address I got them from
http://dolphinmarineservice.homestead.com/RepW.html

Step 28 says, turn the shift shaft with brass piece clockwise and continue to apply pressure to the prop counter clockwise, when it stops it must be facing foward (towards the bow). Then it says, if the point of brass shift arm is not pointing forward (when it turned), lift it and change its position on the splines. I underlined the parts of the instructions that I don't get.

Everything pulled up nicely but I could not get it in reverse at all. Please help

The brass shaft (intermediate shift shaft) simply sits on top of the splined lower shift shaft. When you reassemble the lower to the upper, it will fit over the top of the lower shift shaft. Since it is splined, it will go on many different ways. Only one way is correct.

With the lower in forward gear, just make sure the brass shaft is facing forward when it goes together. You would have to drop the lower unit down to change the position of the shift shaft.

Also, make sure you remembered the stainless washer in the lower unit.

Here's the washer I am talking about. Without it, the intermediate shift arm will go down too far and will not engage the upper shift shaft properly.

Thanks it now more clear. When the gear shift is in forward which way should the propeller turn, clockwise or counter-clockwise?

The prop should lock while turning counter-clockwise (viewed from stern)& ratchet clockwise...;)

While turning the prop counter clockwise, turn the shift shaft straight forward. Keep pressure on the prop with a bungee cord, install lower unit. If when the prop locked in forward, and the shift shaft is not facing straight forward, lift it and set it back.

Thanks from downunder, i can't remember seeing a washer. I'll pull it apart tomorrow to make sure. Hope I haven't done any damage.
