Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

I have an 04 F-150 Supercab Lariat package, 5.4L. w/towing package and 3.55 gears. Running empty on the highway cruise at 70 i get between 17.5-18.1, On my route to work, 35 miles highway, 15 miles major roadway, speed 45 through town, i average 16. Pulling boat 17' Searay 170, Total weigth about 3100 lbs, i get about 13.5 @ 70mph. Slow down to 55, it doesnt matter. Pulling in town it gets about 12 mpg. It has the power to pull what ever you hook onto. If i were to buy a new one today, i would buy the 12 F-150 SuperCrew with the Eco-Boost. About the same numbers on fuel, more horsepower.

I think a lot of the Ecoboost owners aren't getting the promised numbers. I've looked on Fuelly.com, and 15-17 seems to be the norm for them.

2004 Silverado 2WD w/ 5.3L V8. I do a lot of country driving and average about 17mpg on a regular basis. This summer I drove it from Milwaukee to Minneapolis with the A/C on and averaged 23mpg.

If I am pulling my 14ft Alumacraft I don't really see much difference in gas mileage, but then again it is mostly freeway if I am towing. If I am pulling my 26ft camper trailer (4,500 dry, probably closer to 6k loaded) with a truck full of people I can get 13mpg or so.

I have a friend with a similar 2wd Chevy P/U and he reports similar mileage, both unloaded and with a cargo trailer loaded with motorcycles. That little 5.3 seems amazing.

I wonder what the same setup with 4wd gets?

That beats my '94 454 TBI suburban. With a mid weight 20ft boat, it gets 8mpg and that I think is with a 4.11 rear end. Best I've ever gotten, unloaded was 11 mpg. I've got a friend with a '99 350 sequential multiport EFI 'burb, and he gets 17 on the highway and a little over 13 when we pull our boats out to the coast. He doesn't have any trouble keeping up with me either.

Yeah I couldn't be happier with that 5.3. A buddy at work has the 5.7 with 4wd and he gets 2-3mpg less than I do....wish he had the 5.3 for a fair comparison. I know a few people that have the newer 5.3 with that system that shuts off half the cylinders when it doesn't need them, and they are pushing 24-25mph without too much effort. If that is true, I know what I will be replacing mine with when the time is right.

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

Factory fitted tranny coolers towing package or not are not enough at the high end of the towing capacity.

That's a total blanket statement if I ever heard one - if the vehicle was built well, and tested thoroughly, it's more than adequate to meet the tow rating - that's partially HOW they get the tow rating!

That would seriously bug me to pay extra for a tow package, along with the items like a tranny cooler etc.. only to realize that you need a supplemental cooler just to reach factory specs? Then you defend it as the norm? What vehicle are you talking about exactly?

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

For the record, I rented a 2012 Ford Expedition the other day to get my Donzi 1200 miles away (uh, don't tell the rental place!) and I COULD NOT break the 17s on the highway. Wtf? I'm talking full cruise control, 60-65mph, even drafting sometimes.. ;) Nope, I was in the high 17s at most - big shocker.

On the return trip she was 11-12, and once I tried E-85 we were in the 9s. THIS IS A 2012

Anyways - I guess it's worth not beating up the rover with a 1200 mile weekend trip / 600 miles of towing - my thoughts were that it would semi-pay for itself due to mileage benefit  .

The Range Rover Sport (non-supercharged) gets 14.1 city. Honestly I haven't even been able to get a solid highway number out of it, because I commute 8 miles on a road which is always stopped. The city MPG is at an average speed of low-20s on the trip computer (it stays in the low 20s.. literally since I got it!) but I think I've seen 18-19 on the highway. I could hit 20 @ the right RPM w/ cruise control and no hills.

...yeah I know, it's a joke. Oh and it needs premium fuel.

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

I know you will probably want something a little more economical but I thought Id chime in for you anyways.
04 Silverado 6.0L 2500LD 4x4, 9-10city 14-15 hwy, mid 13s when pulling 20' Capri. I have done a lot of mods to try to help MPG, and the truck did respond to it very well and at one time I was getting 17-18 hwy, and then its like it realized that I was happy and went back to crap. Thats with a 6" lift and 35" tires tho.

If you want a good all around motor with the power to boot, the 6.0L are nice, but they sure are thirsty.
The 5.3Ls would be more wallet friendly.

F350 Superduty 8" lift / 35' MT's, 6.4L Twin Turbo Diesel. Average around town is 11.5, Freeway might get 14 at best. I did see 99 mpg comming down a grade right after resetting the mpg. Felt good for a few minutes.

A tow vehicle that gets good gas milage??? Never seen one. ;)

And you never will......you can increase efficency but the amount of energy in a gallon of fuel is absolute. My 4 cylinder S-10 gets about the same towing mileage as my old 4.3 Blazer.

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

With the higher gas prices I actually did an experiment the other day. I took a different way home from work than I took on the way there and recorded the total mileage and mpg on each trip.

To work was 18.5miles with a mpg of 22.3
To home was 22.3 miles with a mpg of 19.2

I kept cruise control on whenever possible and made sure that I never went more than 5mph over the speed limit. I was sort of surprised that there was such a difference just based on the speed limits and the terrain. Both routes take about the same amount of time....so I guess I know which one I will take all the time.

22.6 overall MPG. I reset it after every fill. That's a full combination of highway and city. Some towing. 14K miles, overall.

2013 Lincoln MkT AWD EcoBoost.

The hardest part is keeping my foot out of the EcoBoost. This thing is a "rocket" with that engine. I thoroughly enjoy trashing "rice rockets" with this thing. They hang their head, in shame, when they get trounced by a 4500 pound Lincoln.:D

99 honda odyssey 180k miles about 18mpg around town but I don't baby it and I'm sure the air filter is dirty and tire pressures low. got about 18mpg towing about 1500lbs with 4 people and an 80lb dog to vermont with hilly terrain. great vehicle.

I have had 2 chevy 4wd's with the 5.3, 3:73 gears. I have never gotten anywhere close to that. Average around 13-17 mpg.

Amazing how much difference the 4WD makes....I don't know if I would go the 2WD route again though. Winter driving can be tricky with the 2WD....with a bunch of limestone in the bed to get some traction. I have odd work hours and often am on roads before they get plowed.....have gone through 12-14" of snow numerous times, but not sure how long that luck will last.

Is that a 2wd Hoe or a 4wd Hoe? Also is it throttle body injection? I don't think they went to sequential multi-port until 97 or 98. I know they had it in '99 as it made a whopping difference in mileage and rated HP. In fact, a sequential, multi port injected 350 has higher horsepower than my '94 454 TBI boat anchor.
