Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

2002 F250 Super Duty, 7.3 PS, 4X4, manual trans, super cab, 8' bed with camper shell. It's rated to tow a 10,000# conventional trailer. I bought the truck new and have 172,497 miles on it as of 3/11/12.

I probably drive 2/3 highway, 1/3 city. I don't know what I would get for straight highway mileage since I've never taken that long of a trip. With a 38 gallon tank that's a lot of driving. I usually fill up every 600 miles or so.

A few numbers.
18.63 - MPG averaged over the 172.5K miles.
$.999 - Diesel price the first time I filled it up.
$3.899 - Price the last fill up.
$23,597.08 - Total cost of fuel.

Pretty respectable numbers RL. What is the model/trim and motor size in your wrangler. Is it an automatic w/ 4wd?

Seems that 24 ft SeaArk would tug that baby around a bit?

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

My Explorer with the 4.0 V6 averages just about 20.5 miles per gallon, that is going back and 4th to work everyday, which is a 41 mile round trip, this time of the year 15 miles of that is in 4wd, has good power and a rated towing of 5000lbs, my Jeep Grand full time 4wd with the V8 averages about 16mpg on the same trip, the one that surprises me is my Ford Aerostar with the V6 , it averages 23 mpg on the same trip and is rated to tow 5000lbs! That big ole' extended van is a gas miser and what gets used most of the time.

MT, what year is your Exploder? Is it an automatic? I kind of liked the idea of the explorer. It's a nice size and suits most of my needs. 4wd is a plus as well. I just wasn't sure of real world mileage.

SouthKogs, what motor is in your Mountaineer? Is it 2wd or 4wd? I'm seeing some pretty gruesome mileage claims for those things.

On you E150, your experience mirrors mine. I have a '97 workvan that I drove unloaded for a couple of years. I got consistantly over 18mpg going up and down the Fwy with a little surface street mixed in. Then I loaded her down, as much as 1500 lbs over GVW, and for years now I get a pretty consistant 15ish with 2/3rd hiway and 1/3rd surface street.

My Mountaineer is a 4.0 V6 2WD. The mileage stuff you're reading is probably the 4WD/AWD stuff that EZ and I were talking about. I have a buddy with the V8 2WD and his mileage is still pretty close to mine. I have no clue as to what the newest Explorers are getting, but they look mighty "puffy" and usually that doesn't equal efficient.

Those Ford vans are fantastic. Not the easiest on gas, but overall cost of ownership on mine over five years is cheaper than a comparable minivan. I had a Dodge 2500 back in the 90's and that was a good van too. Sad to me that they're phasing all of these vans out of production.

It has the Chrysler Minivan V6 in it and running with an automatic w/overdrive (shut off when towing). My pontoon weighs just about as much as the SeaArk Pro Cat....I think the 150 OB that's on it adds a little extra weight to it but my Wrangler pulls it just fine. I'm glad that the SeaArk trailer has brakes on it, that helps alot.
The Wrangler is a select 4wd, but I rarely use it about the only time is when there's snow or ice on the boat ramp. Best mileage range is around 65 mph when you start getting up in the 70 range it starts losing mpg regardless of what you're pulling. I use the cruise control 95% of the time also unless I'm climbing steep mountains, then it's all manual controls.

08 4X4 3500 Ram 6.7 CTD towing 5K or so. 11 to 14

Hey Boomyal, is the Burb 4X4? It might be worth more than you think. Lots of RV folks love 'em. I wouldn't just trade it.

Hey Boom,

Mine is a '99, but I work with a guy that has an '02 and he is getting about the same type of mileage, yes we both drive automatic overdrives. We talk about it most every single day. In fact, his will be paid off in a couple of moths and I am trying real hard to get him to sell it to me!

Yep JRJ, it is. Back in '96 I installed a Banks Power Pack system on it. That really woke up that t*rd of a 454 (7.9:1 compression with throttle body injection) but did not help the mileage one whit. Once I narrow down what I'd like to replace the two vehicles with I'll do more research on the value. Trouble is the old Les Schwab shoes are starting to haze on the sidewalls. Les Schwab would not even rotate them for me. A new set of tires would probably cost about half the value of the whole thing.

I assume that is selectable 4wd, not AWD?

Ugh. I'm up against that with my '90 Chevy K1500. Tires are dry rotting. No such thing as cheap truck tires. I'm looking at $5-600 minimum and I only drive the thing a couple thousand miles a year. Wasted time twice now going to look at sets of used tires on CL but both were worse than what I have now.

07 Crown Vic. 20mpg (US gallons)
added a trans cooler as car not rated by Ford to tow 3000, but it pulls boat shown just fine for me.

I always use regular gas in it and I have highway gears (LX rear axle)

Man I thought I was pushing my luck with my tow vehicle......

I'd talk to Les about a set of takeoffs. They get them all the time and can sell them really reasonable. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what the Burb will bring.

2006 Dodge Mega cab 3500 (single rear wheel) with the Cummins 5.9

8-12 in the city (it take a lot to get this thing moving)
23-26 hwy

It also has a super chip installed so that helps tremendously

I'll check with Schwab but I think I might be SOL, for take offs, because I think the '94 uses a different diameter than what is common for the last few years.

I wouldn't hold you to it but do you have a round number in your head? I would be surprised if it would bring 5K and compared to what I would have to pay for anything decent in the early to mid 2000 yr range, that would be pretty weak.

How do you think the 2002+ Explorers, with the independent rear suspension, do for towing? And do you have any experience with the 4.6L V8 version?

Tell me more about it Boom, 3/4 tn, 454, and miles, condition, color, trim level etc. I'm no expert, I just know they are a popular item and some folks that pull really love them.

Very popular with the racing crowd also, pulling car carriers, and enclosed. Take a look over to http://www.racingjunk.com/
