Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

I assume that is selectable 4wd, not AWD?

Yes, selectable 4wd, I also have a 4wd low, which I love, I have had to use it quite a bit the last three days and it has saved my butt!

Tell me more about it Boom, 3/4 tn, 454, and miles, condition, color, trim level etc. I'm no expert, I just know they are a popular item and some folks that pull really love them.

The 'burb is what I drove down to your neck of the woods a few years back when we spent a week at Shasta during a 114? heatwave.
It is a '94 454 with 44k original miles, 4wd, automatic, dual A/C, cruise, factory tinted windows, factory am/fm cassette, leather interior, factory towing package Yada, yada yada. I think it has everything they could stuff in it plus aftermarket alloy wheels and the Banks Power Pack intake and exhaust system. Other than that, no teenage ricer modifications.

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

How do you think the 2002+ Explorers, with the independent rear suspension, do for towing? And do you have any experience with the 4.6L V8 version?

No, I don't with the 4.6L V8, the last V8 Ford I had was in my 87 Bronco, that was a 351 HP motor, towed like a donkey, drank gas like a...well you know what I mean, the only V8, I have had in the last 15 years is the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 318..

'03 Dodge ram 4x4 w/5.7 hemi. 10 in town 14 hwy. Loaded or not. Edit: Does't seem to know it's pulling a 19' boat (glass) or a 20' travel trailer.

I had the same truck (mine was a 2500), same year, same engine until last October. And, I got EXACTLY the same mileage you do. I used it to haul my 24' Chris*Craft and yes, it was a beast.

2011 Ford Explorer-AWD.

Overall average-30K miles. 20.1 MPG.

I've seen as high as 26 but the 20+ is a REAL number. Towing included.

I like my 07 F150 crew cab with a 5.4L. I have never done a milage test on it but its not bad, about 2 weeks on a tank and used for a daily driver. It fits 4 large people well. The only thing I have run into for a problem is parking in a city.

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

'02 Chevy Trailblazer
weighs 4900#
I6 4.2L auto
tows 5000#+

18.1 mpg average over 3.5 years
15 city
23-24 highway

Anytime I take it out of overdrive ( tow mode ) 16 mpg highway towing about 1800#

Pretty much the same figures we get out of our 06 Trailblazer. Only one thing to add,
Towing out travel trailer (5,000 lbs loaded with all our stuff) down to between 10 to 12 mpg depending on headwind, terrain and speed driven. Generally 12 mpg on level ground at 55 to 60 mph.

One more thing to say. If towing more than 50% of the weight limit I would strongly recommend an additional tranny cooler. Worth it's weight in gold in my opinion. Factory fitted tranny coolers towing package or not are not enough at the high end of the towing capacity.

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

I have the 4.0. The truck moves along pretty well and tows a 17' fiberglass boat with no trouble at all.

Do you know what rear end you have in it? Did it come with the 2" class III hitch? The 4.0 tow package may have included the 3.73 rear end. I saw a 2007 the other day that had the dinky little factory hitch.

I have the smaller class II hitch on it.

Just trying to find a compromise via a used vehicle. I do not put on lots of miles and it is senseless to have my 'burb just sitting outside rotting away.

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

Glad you confirmed that for me ... was just lookin' at a used Pacifica and had heard about the mileage. Purty car, though ... wow.
The later ones ('06 to '08) with the 4.0L and 6-speed auto have more power AND get better highway fuel economy. I get 17 to 18 in local driving and up to 23 on the highway (if I keep the speed down to about 60) with my '05 AWD Pacifica.

Re: Report your NO BS mixed driving mileage!

I have an 04 F-150 Supercab Lariat package, 5.4L. w/towing package and 3.55 gears. Running empty on the highway cruise at 70 i get between 17.5-18.1, On my route to work, 35 miles highway, 15 miles major roadway, speed 45 through town, i average 16. Pulling boat 17' Searay 170, Total weigth about 3100 lbs, i get about 13.5 @ 70mph. Slow down to 55, it doesnt matter. Pulling in town it gets about 12 mpg. It has the power to pull what ever you hook onto. If i were to buy a new one today, i would buy the 12 F-150 SuperCrew with the Eco-Boost. About the same numbers on fuel, more horsepower.

My BIL just bought a 2011 F150 supercrew with the V6 ecoboost. It had 6k miles on it when he bought it. Nice truck with good performance but it is only showing 15.2 mpg and that was after a long road trip from Vancouver WA to Seattle WA. He now has 8k miles on it. Not very good IMHO!

During the 70's, I pulled my same boat with a 1964 390 Galaxie wagon. Now that was a motor. I could pull it up the GrapeVine from the CA central valley to LA, with a car full of people, in 90/100 degree heat, at 70 mph with the A/C on. Funny thing, try as I might, I cannot remember what the gas mileage was. In the later 70's I had a 20+ gallon auxiliary gas tank in the spare tire well. I put that in after the Iranian Oil Crisis 'cause you couldn't find any gas en route to the lake.
