Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

I didn't get home from work until about an hour ago. So goes the life of a heating and air technician.:fatigue: I so wanted to at least get all the screws and bolts out tonight. I just walked out to the garage and gave everything another quick spray of penetrating oil.

So how much epoxy should I order for my transom? The link Bob gave shows iboats sells it in Quart, half gallon, and gallon amounts. I think I will end up replacing the two dash pieces later in the spring when I find some gauges I like so if the epoxy will keep I'd like to have enough for that as well.

BTW - What transom. All I see is flowerpot dirt.
That's funny Ga. The Admiral asked me if the boat had termites after she saw what was under the transom cap. I said no just previous owners. They're almost as bad.:D

All the crap I had to remove to get it out.

Most of the tools I used now in a pile in the bottom of the boat.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

I'll post some more on this tomorrow. I've been at it for about 4 hours now, and I'm beat. I've got lots of pictures, and lots of questions. There is definitely more to this than meets the eye. It nearly got the best of me tonight, but with the Admirals help we got it out.

Thanks for stopping by.

Dave.

Good deal getting the wood out. The transom looks less like flowerpot dirt now that it's out. :) A decent pattern to make a one piecer. I swear SC used scraps to make the top corners. I used spar, so I know nothing about how much epoxy. iboats just got into the resto supplies business or they are promoting it more. There are some good deals, discounts and giveaways - The home page to the resto/epoxy stuff - Fiberglass & Epoxy Boat Repair & Building

Boats make good tool collectors and everything is at hand. :D Usually. :blue:

Nice man, those transoms can be a real bugger sometimes. The key to getting them out is basic perseverance.

Another transom battle won by a tinhead, three good coats of Helmsman spar varnish will seal up the new ply real well.

Good work don't slow down.

Examine the metal surface that was in contact with the transom. Look for corrosion........... sand off any corrosion and if it is okay just paint it....... if it needs some areas filled in I would fill them now then paint. Examine the knee brace since they are also known to crack.

Mine was the same way, as I recall, the top pieces weren't fastened on at all. Good work getting it out in one piece to make a template!

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

Ok here are the pictures of the transom coming out last night.

Here is a shot of the transom under the splash well along with some of the 50 or so screws I had to take out to remove the transom.

IMG_0399.JPG

The upper pieces of the transom were so soft I pulled them out by hand.

Here I tapped the Splash well drains in on themselves. I pushed them back into the transom so I could lift it straight up.

This is how I lifted it out. I used the 2x4's as leverage and pried up adding more as I needed to.

I worked from side to side until I could get it out by hand.

My beagle was happy I got it done. He barked almost the whole time because he could here me working in the boat, but couldn't see me.:)

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

A couple of questions. Does anyone know what this piece is for?

IMG_0345.JPG

IMG_0373.JPG

The bracket I am pointing to is where the bottom of the transom was screwed in. It is riveted to the transom skin. However several rivets are broken so I will have to do some more work than I thought.

You can also see in the above pic some staining on the inside of the outer transom skin. I'll have to sand it down and primer and paint it.

While trying to remove this tie down out I wallowed out the two holes in the outer transom skin a bit. I hope some 5200 will seal it up okay.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

So Ive got allot more work left to do. I'll be gathering supplies this weekend and hopefully I can get some sanding and painting done to the transom skin as well as get the transom wood cut and maybe sealed. I plan on repainting the boat next winter so I'll probably just redo the splash well and the transom in beige to match the rest of the boat for now. Thanks for all the advice, and if anyone can figure out what that pan is in the earlier post I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for stopping by.

Dave - The plate riveted to the transoml, did the bottom happen to sit close to the hull. I wonder if it's a bilge pump mounting plate? It could be used for that.

My 1st thought was battery tray? But it's not substantial enough, so yep ^^^ probably for a bilge pump

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

Ga & jb. It is about 3 inches to the bottom of the boat from the bottom of that plate. Also there is a screw or bolt of some kind in the bottom of the plate. I wonder if it's something like a battery box or hold down of some kind. The bilge is mounted to a plate that is attached to the knee brace on the other side. it sits almost on the bottom.

In this picture you can see the rod I'm talking about.

IMG_0345.JPG

The pan on the left is attached to the first inner floor stringer at the top. Maybe it's not factory.:noidea:

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

I looked at the splash well and the knee brace. Even with that rotten transom there don't seem to be any cracks in either. If there is any (To coin a phrase from Sig ) "Silver Lining" that would be it.
