Is the rod in the plate stuck in from the back? Won't hold a battery that way. I think you found a piece of patch tin. :)

Good with no brace/SW cracks. Maybe you got her in time.

That's the factory StarCraft battery mount, my first 16SS had the same thing.

Ok so I didn't get any real work on the boat done today, but I did pick up some materials.

This is what $150.00 bucks buys you at our local Lowes.

I lied a bit I did sand on the transom skin a little to see how hard it would be to get the staining off.

I'm going to inspect it very closely, but there doesn't seem to be much pitting. What little there is is not very deep. I bought some primer at Lowes that's specifically for aluminum. I couldn't find any etching primer. I'm going to check with an auto paint supply house on Monday before I open up those cans.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

Besides actually working at my job some today:blue: I also spent the day cutting and bending some sheet metal at my work to fix the leaking roof on my garage.

Today was the first warm non rainy day in a while. So even though I've been chompin at the bit to work on the boat, I had to try and fix my leaky roof. It's supposed to start raining tonight and , rain tomorrow. We may actually get snow here in the mountains on tuesday. I''m so done with winter!!

I'm going to try and get the wood cut and glued tomorrow for the transom, and I may do some sanding on the transom. Maybe I can get a little done tomorrow. We'll see.

Thanks for stopping by..

A buck fifty doesn't go far these days. :blue:

The inner sanctum...er.. transom looks good, Tn. The Rusto Pro should work OK on the AL. Rusto website says its a base coat to produce a tight-binding top coat. Two light coats - Sounds like zinc chromate except it isn't.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

Ok so I got a little work on the transom done tonight.

I measured out and cut the plywood using the old transom as a template.

The admiral was also working in the garage tonight, and saw that I was having a hard time cutting the new plywood. So being the good wife she is she told me to go get what I needed to complete this little project.:D

New tools are always good when you have the Admiral's blessing.

New blade for my circ saw.

New jig saw as my old rockwell bit the dust last year.

Now I used almost a whole bottle of titebond on the transom. Hope it is enough.

When I clamped the transom the glue came out pretty even around the edges.

I made sure to wipe off the excess around all the edges.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

So I got a little done tonight. Now I need to take some time and clean up my work bench, and garage.

My work bench is the worst.

I have plenty of room to work, I just have to move a few things out of the way to have some work space.

My other boat takes up more space than anything. It's awaiting my completion of the starcrafts repair so I can finish the stringers, and deck in it.

Don't straighten up too much, TN. You won't find anything. Kudos to the Admiral for seeing the need for some new toys or tools. :thumb:

The transom glue job looks good. Just let it sit a few days before unclamping.

And finally - Did the roof fix work?

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

It rained here off and on today. So far so good no roof leaks.:D Yeah what usually happens when I straighten up the garage is I spend the next three days digging things back out to work with them. One vicious cycle. Clean, mess up, Clean, mess up. Oh well that's the nature of things in my garage at least.

Yeah thats usually exactly how i do with my shop except you left out a step I clean then I swear I will never let it get so bad again. A month later the cycle starts over she looks great.

As far as your primer. Lowes doesnt sell self etching/zinc chromate by the quart its only by the rattle can its by the specialty rattle can paints.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

So a little more progress. Didn't get much done this week. I let the transom glue dry for about three days before I took off the clamps. Here is the transom cut out.

Now for a some questions. there are some small voids at the top of the transom where I cut it out. What should I use to fill them if anything before sealing the new transom. Here are some pics.

The largest ones are about the size of a quarter. there are two of them. The smaller ones are about half the size of a dime. there are two of them as well. I thought about using some wood flower or sawdust and some wood glue to fill in the voids. They are not very deep. The rest of the transom edges are solid. These voids are all in the top of the transom.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

Also before I can trim the new transom correctly I need to reattach this bracket that the bottom of the transom sits in. Most of the rivets are damaged. What kind of rivets should I use for this support, and where is the best place to get them? You can see in the picture below they are blind rivets I think.

Most of the rivets have broken clean. the inside part is still in the transom support, and the outside part is still in the hull.

I can't set the transom in for final measuring until I get this plate reattached.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

I bought rivets from rivetsonline.com

3/16" shaft, closed end blind rivets, long enough to do the job. Get several different lengths, you'll likely need more for other stuff.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

Oh and the garage roof is holding up well. However I still haven't cleaned the work bench yet. That's on my to do list for tomorrow. Here is a little of what we've had for weather this week.

Yes I know allot of members here got more snow than we did, but this is what we woke up to Tuesday after we had 60 degree weather here for the weekend. Mother nature sure likes to mess with us.

Go to the Dollar Store and buy some 5 min epoxy.

Mix in some sanding dust to thicken it and fill those voids with the mixture.
