Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

By the way I know she has VA registration numbers on her. We haven't registered her here in Tn yet. She'll hopefully have her new numbers in a few weeks. Then She'll be good to go... We really love our little SS...

Hooray! She looks so natural sitting there on the water, and dry as a bone....Congrats!

I don't know what you have for a roller on the back of your trailer, but you might think about one of these:

I added one when I fixed up my trailer, and it makes a lot of difference in getting it centered, especially helpful when the wind is blowing.

I too used those self centering rollers and they are worth every cent.

Lakelover and Dozer thanks for the info on the roller. That looks like just the ticket. I'm going to start a thread in the trailer section because I think my trailer is set up wrong. My question is how do I add links to threads in my signature? That way I can link the work I've done related to this boat.

Dry as the Sahara, Tn. :D

To put links in the sig, just copy the URL of the thread , edit your sig and paste and save. If that doesn't work - Blame Murphy. lol

Thanks GA. I'm sure Murphy doesn't have to try too hard when it comes to me and computers.:smash: The funny thing is 22 years ago I was a computer tech in the Air Force.:watermelon: Lost my touch a bit I guess.

Thanks lckstk. She'll look even better with the outboard back on her. I got the drill guide from Harbor Freight.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

Got some more work done although it took me a while to get to it. I had purchased new splash well drains and tried to install them on Monday. That didn't work out to well. I was using the wrong size nuts and bolts I guess. Anyway here was the results of my attempt on Monday.

Real nice isn't it.

So I picked up two more drain tubes which meant I had one spare, and tried to install them again last night. Here is how they turned out.

What all I used to install them with.

Those are 3/4 nuts and bolt.

I applied 5200 liberally.

Then used the bolt with the piece of copper to help center it in the drain tube.

Next I used the lock nut turned backwards to start my flare on the inside.

Once the flare was started I used the flat washer and regular nut to finish the flare.

The finished product.

I marked the drain tubes where they came through the transom and then added about 1/8 to 1/4 inch and cut them.

I just used regular tubing cutters. They worked great.

Re: Replacing my 16ft SS Starcrafts Transom

I ended up screwing up the other one again so it was good I picked up a spare tube.

After my screw up I got it right.

I also got the ski ties installed. I'm picking up some aluminum square pieces today for backing plates.

I did practice trying to make the flares but I guess I still need some practice. For the next transom I do..

So I have to finish sanding the back then primer and paint. Then put the outboard on, and take her out. All things considered it's turned out pretty good. Even with all my goofy setbacks.

Flaring the drain tubes can be a little tricky. Slow & easy is the way to go, frequently backing off and then going a little more forward. Great job in the end though.
