If this is the top mount idle lever then you will need Johnson type 479 in the correct length.
If this is the side mount lever thrn you will need the type 400 cable.

Hope this helps! `

If you check shop.evinrude.com instead of selecting Johnson or Evinrude scroll down and select
OB Accessories - EN then shift & throttle cables.

Did you try the throttle adjustment as per the book?
Don't forget you shouldn't try to select any gears unless the motor is running or someone is turning the prop by hand.

Edit: Any part numbers on the old cables, maybe on the black sheath?

All started by pulling the lower unit it test a used one, usually enough play to move the cable to align the shift pin, helper got a little rambuntious I think. Lesson well learned,

Post a photo of the starboard side of your motor with cover off.

That photo wont show anything new. Both cables mount on the starboard side. The only difference is that the older style the shift cable is held on by a nut and the throttle is help on by a clip. All the newer 40.50,55 and 60hp are all held on by nuts. The shift cable is located inside by the powerhead and the throttle is located on the outward side. Then there is a small tab with a bolt that holds everything down.

It's best to disconnect both cables while doing this. Then adjust the trunion fitting so that it fits in the slot.

If my back wasn't hurting like a milk truck hit it and the rain would go away a I'd take pictures for you.

I thought it might be the same, or similar. My motor is a little older so didn't want to make an absolute statement. Also, getting ajp1977 looking at the motor, helps the conversation!

Are the cable ends the same and just the method of attachment different. Mine is a 1977, his is a 1984?

I believe mine is 1 nut and 1 clip

That's a double whammy, bad back and rain!! Take care, the sun will return!!:)

As I recall the 1977 still uses a clip to attach the throttle. I know the 1983 and later use nuts.

As bonz-d said, the 77 has a clip on the throttle, and the 84 uses a nut the same as the shift on both years. But the "Casing guide, control housing", the remote end of cable, part # 206408 and the "Casing guide/O ring assembly", the motor end of cable, part # 385956 should be the same. I am including a photo of a 77 Power Pilot (remote) cable pair and a photo of the motor ends of cables. Minus the clip on the one cable, these cables should be the same as the 84.

Match them both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Compare these to yours, if they are the same, than you only need to figure length of cable.

This is an unserviced cable set and remote so excuse the filthy condition of the parts. Easier to get to than what is installed on my boat, these are in my shop.

what am I supposed to match, the control box or the outboard? hell I was thinkin you had to match the motor.

No doubt, to have 3 up and running you have to know something. BTW, your totally right, clip on the 77. Check out my response to ajp1977, see if you agree.

The 1st picture shows a 1977 remote. The cable ends are different. That uses a #400 cable that has a cable that passes thru a hole a furrel and then is locked down with a set screw. Like the old 2 lever units.
