Those cables are really shot. Not worth working on at all! The entire cable may very well be rusted and full of fine dirt.

So I guess where I am at now is I will replace cables, go through and install them to specs I have had sent to me. Thanks by the way for those. I will be ordering those tonight! Im currently looking up correct cables for the motor as I found out in earlier post or if anyone knows proper cables off hand.

Got the link. Thanks. Believe me I will have these posts next to me when installing. I just have never replaced cables and really ever messed with boat motors. Guy I had to work on my jon boats moved and I tried a "new" guy. I told him to tune up that evinrude and get the controls working smooth. Got boat back three weeks later and barely ahead of where I was before I took it to him. He even told me my cables would need replaced....huh wonder why he didn't order em. Bottom line is ya get what ya pay for. So now here I am asking you guys. I do appreciate your time and knowledge.

I would start by removing my old cables and then visually match them to new. Measure them once you have them removed. I am assuming the motor came with the boat. Or you can figure it out. What is the length of your boat and where is your helm located in relation to bow and stern. Measure the distance and allow for proper curves and appropriate slack at motor end for motor movement.

Now this is useful information! I'm getting ready to install my newly serviced cables this weekend.

Rigging the cables is important, needs to be done halfway between the forward & neutral positions otherwise it can bind up the controller.

There is an easy way to do this. Remove the unit from the mount then loosen the cap screw fron the back of the handle 3 turns, then with a center punch that will fit inside the capscrew tap it lose with a hammer. That will remove the handle. then remove the 3 screws holding the halves together, carefully split the halves, DO NOT TOUGH ANYTHING ELSE!

The throttle cable is held in with a tappred pin and only goes in one way, that is the easy one, The shift cable has a plastic plate covering held by 3 screws. remove those and that cable will also fall out.

I know this as I just replaced a throttle shaft plate today and even with a manual it was a chore.

next comes sold side lever that is missing parts. but the price was right!

yep, gonna measure old cables and order exact same length as they do allow plenty of movement while not having to much extra. Im guessing the same problem could exist if there is a slight slit in the steering cable as well! not near as stiff though. Just asking

Damage to any of your cable housings/coatings etc., is not good. It can allow moisture, dirt and other contaminates in which causes rust, binding etc. What kind of steering cable/cables you got on your boat?

Take lots of pictures as you take it a part you will need them later.

agreed, lots of very detailed pictures as the ones in the manual are not very clear or detailed. W/o incident should only take a couple hours at best.

Yes, take pictures, but the diagrams are much better in the Evinrude Parts Catalog than the service manual. They also show assembly sequencing very clearly.

just take your time and make sure you order the correct ones for the control box you have. You'll do fine.

what am I supposed to match, the control box or the outboard? hell I was thinkin you had to match the motor.
