Yes, as I said, that is a 1977 Evinrude Power Pilot remote in the first picture. So your saying these are not interchangeable cables? Which one uses the 400 cable, the 77 or the 84? I'm confused by " has a cable that passes thru a hole a furrel" What is a furrel? not familiar with the term, looked it up and can't readily find it!

The 1st picture shows a 1977 remote. The cable ends are different. That uses a #400 cable that has a cable that passes thru a hole a furrel and then is locked down with a set screw. Like the old 2 lever units.

The newer units have a circular ring with a pin that passes thru it. There is also a plastic pcs held in place with 3 screws over the shift cable, remove those and there will be acsess to the pin in the other cable. All there is to it.

Remember on the top lever units to remove the unit and loosen the set screw in the back of the throttle 3 turns and then punch the handle out. Loosen the 2 screws holding the halves together and carefully split the case. With the case split ypu shpuld be able to access the cables.

Gotta go, pain meds working can't think or type any more,

As bonz-d said, the 77 has a clip on the throttle, and the 84 uses a nut the same as the shift on both years. But the "Casing guide, control housing", the remote end of cable, part # 206408 and the "Casing guide/O ring assembly", the motor end of cable, part # 385956 should be the same. I am including a photo of a 77 Power Pilot (remote) cable pair and a photo of the motor ends of cables. Minus the clip on the one cable, these cables should be the same as the 84.

Match them both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Compare these to yours, if they are the same, than you only need to figure length of cable.

This is an unserviced cable set and remote so excuse the filthy condition of the parts. Easier to get to than what is installed on my boat, these are in my shop.

the 1st picture is what you will see inside the control box the 2nd set of pictures is what you will see at the engine end. The 2 are not interchangeable with the 2 different control boxes. Take a look at the #400 cable and the #479, they are not the same! Different ends.

So in conclusion.. I needs to remove old cables, buy the 497 cables in same length, replace and my stiffness in the throttle and idle lever should be solved. I'll have the old ones off tomorrow and show pics...you'll cringe.

ajp I doubt I'll cringe. May hoop and howler but not cringe.

Once recieved a pair of Simplex 2 handle controls that the cables wouldn't even move.! Stripped all the hardware from then and kept all the parts and still have most of them.

But I have faith! Read through this again, take your time and everything will turn out. Once you're done I think you will suprise yourself.

Forgot to ask..when the site is selling different length cables, are they giving you total length of the 2 cables or just the length for each...only reason I ask before I order is cause they sell 28'! Was wondering if that was for both

One other thing, start at the engine and work your way forward. It will be easier.

It's the length of each cable.

Don't forget to clean up, service and lube your remote unit as well.

yes the length of the cable is each. Sold by foot. Last response must not have made it through. Remember longer is better than too short.

Remove each and measure then order same length, Right and left are also the same.

Hey bubba' would that white lithium grease be OK for the cleanup and lubing if the control box? And thanks for the advice bonz, any special tools required before I start this project

I would be inclined to first clean the parts with something like WD40. Blow it out with some air and allow to dry. Then you can apply the white lithium where needed. Don't over use, you have a bit too much on the motor, it's just a waste of materials, as well as more to collect contaminates. Below is a quote from PermaTex regarding their white lithium grease.

"All-purpose white lubricant is designed to reduce friction between load bearing metal-to-metal and metal-to-plastic applications. Protects against rust and makes surfaces friction-free. Stainless and long-lasting formula. Contains no ODCs. Withstands moisture and high temperature. Level 3 *NFPA Fire Code 30B"

BTW OK, I get it. I have friends in Chicago and am told it's been a real crappy winter. Snow, wet and your typical wind!!:lol:

Hang on, we're sending some sunshine your way!!

Were going to be in the 70's today with no wind, FINALLY! Day off, going to work on boat so I can put it in water when my new fuel tank arrives. My last missing part to install before first spring launch.:)
Unfortunately it does not arrive until Monday.:thumb:

lol Illinois..windy and 20 degrees below average///those pics you sent looked identical

Re: remote throttle box shot? throttle cables junk?

Why is it easier to start at the motor and work forward?

By starting at the rear there are only 2 nuts and a clip or 3 nuts depending on the unit. Then the ends are free to move around and can be pulled forward.

The unit with the side lever should have only 3 screws holding the cover on and then you will have access to the cables. The cable ends then go thru a barreled furrel and are tightenened down with an allen key. Then the cover is replaced.

The other unit is a bit more difficult. Again remove the ends from the engine side. This will allow the cables to move freely, then remove the unit from the mount. On the back side there is another allen bolt. This holds the throttle lever on, Loosen it 3 turns then with a punch remove the trottle lever. Then on the front side there are 2/3 large screws that hold the unit together. Remove those and carefully split the case. DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING ELSE! On the front side will be the Throttle cable. it is held in by a pin. Pull pin and cable should fall out. Again on the back side is a cover with 3 screws covering the Shift cable, it is also held in by a pin. Replace cable.

Assure that the throttle is in the nuetral position, reassemble unit. Then reattach and adjust the cable ends to the engine. Should all be good to go.

I know this because I just broke the throttle shift plate on the unit for my 1986 unit. That part is no longer available but was able to locate a used one for the cost of $50.00

Only thing really needed is a large screw driver, hammer, allen wrenches and a small screw driver. Oh and a 7/16" and 1/2" wrench

Good luck with the launch on Monday...with any luck I won't be too far behind ya. With you and bonz help should be good...I'll definitely keep you guys posted on tomorrows progress. Anything you can do to prolong life of the new cables after installation?

Re: remote throttle box shot? throttle cables junk?

I have had cables last years, Keep them clean and watch for hard bends. I know there are cable dressings available out there though I've never used them.

Any problems or questions feel free to ask.

I think the hardest part of this thread was we were dealing with 2 different control boxes that use 2 different cables. Hope we were able to sort it all out! And good luck.
