What materials are recomended for a transome? Should i go with marine plywood or is there a better substitute? How thick do i go on the transome if im powering up with a 150 or a 200hp mercury outboard? The boat i have is a 25' Panga. After taking out the plywood floors i noticed the stringers on the boat i just got are hollow... there is nothing in them but towards the front a portion of the stringer is missing and they put in a 2 x 4??? it that right? I was wondering if i could fill in the original stingers with a nida core filler or somee kind of foam?

Most of the guys here on the forum just use a good grade of ext. grade plywood for Transoms, Stringers and Decks. The Arauco brand seems to work really well. I'd recommend building the transom back to the same thickness as the original. The first link in my signature below has some drawings and info on how to do all you will be doing. If the stringers are hollow, how thick is the glass? How do you know they are hollow? You can use Nidacore for stringers but it's very pricey.

The stringers are about 1/4" thick and i know they are hollow cause there are some holes... THe stringers are mostly in good condition, but there are some soft spots. I was thinking of cutting off the tops and doing some touch ups inside and out on the bad parts then tinking of filling them in with a foam or something. What are your thoughts or recommendations?

1/4" Stringers??? I need to see pics. That's extremely narrow for stringers!!! Not familiar with that boat sooo....Can't speak from experience.

Can't get to Facebook from work!!! Most of the guys here on the forum use a Free Photobucket account and then post their pics by copying and pasting the IMG code.

Ok, I gotcha Now you meant the walls of the stringers are 1/4". Yep those are "Engineered" Stringers and require NO interior filler material. A lot of guys will go ahead and fill em with pourable foam for the added benefit of additional floatation. Some don't. Your choice. Looks to me like that Panga is a well built craft. I'd replace the Transom and deck and button her up and enjoy!!!! Post some pics of the entire boat so we can see what she looks like.

Re: Rebuilding Transom and Stringers...

the floors were 3/4" plywood floors and it was not marine quality plywood. lots of water logged plywood, the bottom of plywood was not glassed... Probably removed over 400lb+ of plywood. Im going to put in some nida core floors and thinking of patching up the stringers and filling them with foam.

WOW ! How KOOL is that!!! I love her!!!! Where are you located and how will she be used? The issue with the wood was not the wood but rather how the wood was fabricated. If you prep wood properly, seal it correctly, Glass it and coat it well, Maintain it in the prescribed manner it will last for Decades. Your description indicates that is was NOT the case and thus the severe deterioration of it. Nida Core would be Great but pricey. Those Stringers are for sure good to go as they are as long as they are still laminated to the hull well. What's her length and beam?

Im in South Padre Island Tx, and im a fishing Guide. I had a smaller boat and was looking for a larger boat, but its pricey to buy new so i found a nice boat that just needed some TLC and she will work great for the location i fish. Most of the fishing i do is in 3ft of water so the lighter i keep her the better. She will also help for offshore fishing. She is 25' long 6' wide. She will float in 8" when im done with the rebuild. I thought about putting in a tunnel in the hull but i dont know what that might do to the stability so i through that idea out.

What fiberglass do i use???

What fiberglass do i use???

Im not sure what it the proper oz. fiberglass to use.
Do i use different oz. for putting in the new deck on the boat than you would use for a transome???
Is there a better epoxy and resin that i should use?
Im about to start putting in my new transome and new nida core floors on my boat but not sure what products i should use, so if any PROs out there can help... Please enlighten me, cause this is my first time and the idea is to save money not do the job twice:facepalm:

Re: What fiberglass do i use???

the resin affects the fiberglass so you have to decied on what resin you are using before you decied on the type of glass. Also you will be using diffrent weights and types on diffrent parts.
The resin depends on the age of the boat but im not sure what resin is required to bond nida core (is that the precoated nida core or the plain). Epoxy resin will stick to all types of original hull material and is the best but its also twice the cost. Take a look at this site and you will see the diffrent types and there surgested use U.S. Composites, Inc. - Fiberglass , Epoxy , Composites, Carbon Fiber

I would contact the Nida-Core company and ask their reps for their recommendations. I suspect that the layup schedule will be quite similar to the standard plywood layup schedule.

What steps do i take to waterproof and glue my new transom???

What steps do i take to waterproof and glue my new transom???

I just got my Hydro teck plywood and in not sure what steps i need to take to stick them together and waterpoof it.

Do i get a good cocking glue and bond the three plywood pieces together first or do i waterproof them first?

Ive been looking at videos on how to do this but they are not very specific.

My transom also has an angle half way down and not sure how to accomidate/compinsate for the angle. I can sand down some of the angle but there will still be a gap from the outer skin and my new transom.

Uhhmmm Pics always help us to see what you see. Free Photobucket account is the best way. Use the IMG Code to copy and paste em into iBoats. What kind of boat? Glass? Aluminum? It makes a difference on the techniques you will use.

Ok, I just clicked to check your other posts. This is a good example of why the Forum recommends that you keep your posts all in one thread concerning your project. It's very hard for us to understand what's going on when they are not. For your Transom you can use Titebond III wood glue to glue the pieces together and use wood screws to secure them while it dries. Next day remove the screws and then mix up some thickened Poly or Epoxy resin and fill the screw holes. Are you using Poly or epoxy on your boat? Check the link in my signature below on how to install the transom. You should prolly ask a moderator to combine your posts into one so it will be easier to keep track. That's what the forum rules and guidelines recommends.

Glass boat, and the original transom was just 8" wide and im extinding it down. The transom will be 14" wide. When i say wide, im talking about top to bottom. The bottom of the transom area is not sanded down yet as you can see but i think after i do sand it down it will still have a slight angle.
