120 to 92 lowest, but it was a new tester that I used due to the deeper plug holes. My other tester is better. With those numbers it should not run.

I would hold off on the tear down until you can run some water to the motor, get it to operating temps, do a decarb on the motor and then recheck the compression.

Whats a decarb? Maybe a stupid question

I still need to go through the fluids. PO told me oil was changed about 6 months before I got it. Oil is dirty now, but was believable so I need to change it and change the closed cooling fluid.

I also have the outdrive pulled parts and going through that. Will need a seal kit and all new top bearings.

Anyone know how that top bearing comes off? I have watched many videos of leg rebuilds, but no one seems to take them off. I will need to replace mine. Looks to be pushed on?

Can't help you with that outdrive bearing, but the manual should tell you. When I had my 165hp mercruiser, I downloaded the full manual (which included the outdrive rebuild section).

X2 to what Waterman said about getting some water to that motor and running it for a while. Those compression numbers will probably get more consistence after running a gallon of fuel through it.

Seafoam works wonders, been using it several years. Just had to decarb my big snow blower with it Sunday just in time for a snow dump we got on Tuesday

WM - ok, I have watched videos of the seafoam. Never heard the decarb term used. LOL don't forget I am Canadian.

oldrem - Keep your snow, I don't want it

OK, so that last week, I have come across a couple boats I just could not say no to.

Fist I bought a 16' Prowler bowrider with a 3 ltr in it for a crazy price, sorry no pics on that one right now. Needs the starter and ignition changed before I can get it running.

Today I went and picked up a 22' Starcraft Chieftain. The hull floor and transom are in great condition. Does not have a motor or leg, but is a merc cutout so should be easy to find.

Waterman, I know you will like this photo!!

Nice looking Chief! That canvas looks good in the pictures and with the floor and transom in good shape, you probably got a good deal.

Replaced the plugs and ran the 165 for about 45 mins today. I finally got the fitting to connect it to the water hose. Easy to start after I got the fuel going, ran like it was new.

I have the pre-alpha drive half pulled apart to rebuild. Does anyone have a good video or instructions on how to take the gimbal ring off and breakdown the transom housing?
