The last v8 I was into was a 10 year old 57 Chevy. Back then we would put solid lifters and a 3/4 race cam. After going through your links I see that cams are much different than then. Don't know if solid lifters are even used anymore let alone two 4 barrel carbs, witch was a good time in those days.

for the 5.3, I am going total luddite build on this one. basically 100+ year old technology that is still with us today vs the electronic-du-jour that will not be around next year. controlling the suck-squish-bang-blow in a manor that will remain relevant next year as well as 2050

Induction will be a Victor Jr clone intake and a holley HP830 carb. simply because bernoulli's principle still applies and I can get parts for a 40 year old carb where I can not get parts for a 40 year old EFI setup

the coils and their placement have already been determined and they will go in the cowl to hide them. they will not be sitting on the engine as that just looks wrong

that leaves spark management. going down a rabbit hole of thoughts and parts research for the Fiat build

on one hand, the MSD 60143 ignition controller.

https://images.holley.com/583x/60143_05.jpg

this is designed for the LS, it requires both the cam sensor and crank sensor (both which often fail) to deliver a spark. I can customize the maps, and there is a 2-bar MAP sensor should I need one. while the 6014 is a giant leap beyond the 6010 or 6012....... they still have about a 3% failure rate

or I can go billet flathead V8 mechanical advance dizzy and simply modify the timing cover and make a cam drive for the dizzy tang

Its billet, based on a simple magnetic pickup and has mechanical advance. it has two components that potentially can fail, the pickup and the cap

the cool factor would be the dizzy if I have room. however that remains to be seen as the radiator is only a few inches forward of the block

the easy factor would be the FUGLY MSD box.

the low cost factor is the dizzy
the expensive option is the MSD

the only thing holding me back on the dizzy is space and the fact that the dizzy uses a crab cap...... those that know the internal design flaw of these cross-talking beauties

Well........ I answered my own question. driving off the cam wont fit with a crab cap. wonder if I can modify the Voyager EST box and cut-down a billet dizzy body.

and yes, while there are front dizzy mounts from weneger for the racing an now street rod market https://www.wegnerautomotive.com/drive-kits/lsx-drive-kits/distributor-ignition/wak011/

looked into buying one. no longer available. the guy that runs ls4king had an accident. they now have stainless versions.

going to either modify the stock pan or make my own.

Well....... The block is non-useable for anything but fitment.

The pan is mostly intact and can be modded as a starter mount

The crank has heavy scars

There are at least 3 wrist pin snap rings amongst the bits

The crack on the outside AC compressor boss stems from the hole on the inside

Can not get an advance curve on the SCE flathead dizzy from either Speedmaster, Procomp (same company), or speedway motors. I may end up buying one just to look at the advance mechanism to determine if its feasible. If it matches the stock flatty curve of 22 degrees, all in by 2000, then its feasible. however the dizzy doesnt have a vac advance. so part throttle cruise will not be as efficient. plus, besides my rough estimate in CAD, this pic shows it wont fit cam driven.

Motor vehicle Automotive tire Light Automotive design Rim

however could work belt driven, just sitting higher on the block
So, while spelunking on the inteweb in one of the 36 browser windows open.......
I noticed that MSD dropped their prices by over 10% from $523 down to $470 (they recently raised them 50% from $384 to $523)
the Daytona Sensors route by the time the MAP sensor is added, its higher. Base of $462 plus $70 for the MAP
the Microsquirt rabbit hole, $360 for the MS V3, $30 for a MAP, make a harness....... I am into it for the same price.

I'm glad my house is too small for a fancy walk in closet
the closet is only 92 x 71. so there isnt a lot of room. Tammy has enough stuff in there to fill a 12 x 15 walk in closet.
