Yeah my boat is still laying in pieces. Hopefully the taxman will give me some of my dang money back as I would like to get this in the water this summer. I need to learn/research fiberglassing. soon I will be pouring transom. not sure if I will go with Nidacore or Arjay. Stringers I am not sure how I will take care of those yet. One thing on my mind is attaching the seats to the floor so it will last and be cooperative should they need to come out in the future.

My boat is very similar, 1966 Larson but the windshield is different.

The previous owner bolted diamond plate to the transom. I have a feeling that the wood in my boat is the same as yours, rotted and in need of replacement.

I bought the whole thing, trailer, motor, and boat for $300 at a garage sale and spent $35 on used seats, $50 on a new impeller, and $130 on wires for the motor (1975 Merc 850 engine harness was shot).

I figure now that the motor is running, I will take it out this season and fix the transom this fall, barring complications with the existing setup, transom, diamond plate, etc.

Looks like a lot of fun. I can see that I will be doing what you are doing very in the near future. I cant wait to see how it turns out, post more pics!

what are you doing with the trim panels that run down the insides of the boat?The plastic trim pieces are busted up pretty good and I'm looking for more ideas on what to do with them.

I am following this thread to see what I can learn. I have the same boat only inboard engine 120hp. Got my own set of challenges (i.e OMC outdrive). I just love the old Larson lines though...and my floor is solid as a rock as is the transom also. Can't wait to see when it is done!!!

nothing wrong with "good" old threads. I just bought a lapline my self. I'll post pics tomorow. I'm throwing her together as a project. I cant wait to finish her. TTYl!

Wow, I can't believe how long ago it has been. Guess I should have posted pics of the final touches before It hit the lake again. Oh wait I haven't done anything on it. Funny how things like getting laid off changes plans... Well that aspect got fixed and am currently finishing the basement which will be done by Halloween so I'm getting back to the boat then. I am always watching other posts on here for inspiration. Anyway, the ol girl is gonna get worked on soon, bare with me as I am slow though as you can see. Made a promise to my self that it will be on the water summer of 2012, my girls are growing up too fast and they need to learn how to ski! If anyone has pics of their 1966 Larson lap line post them up.

Oh and I am thinking about starting on the trailer and get it done first. Thoughts?

Do it. I didn't and regretted it.

Just a tip though, don't throw too much money at parts and things. A brand new trailer costs less than you might think.

Yeah

I can vouch for the new trailer part. If it's more than surface just sell it and buy a better one. I'm debating on keeping mine. I'll more than likely buy an aluminum trailer. I fish in the sound a lot. And brackish water as well when the salmon get in the rivers. Really good pink and silver runs this year.

So I have the trailer complete for the most part and I got the boat hull back home from storage so I am getting anxious.

Took the trailer down to bare metal, then I coated with POR15 and then coated with BLACKCOTE. Hopefully it will last, I love the stuff. Only thing left is fender restore, winch restore and dressing up the bow roller. All of that will have to wait until the boat is ready complete and ready to head to the lake.

Now studying up on fiber glassing, wood materials, etc. I tend to over plan as I enjoy working smarter than harder LOL

Recently watched some youtube videos by friscojarretts (Anyone know his handle on here?) He makes it look like I may have a chance!

Woodonglass has some great info in his thread and who can miss oops' thread!

At this point I have ditched the pourable transom thoughts I had originally and plan on going with wood. Trying to read everything on marine vs exterior, man there are a lot of opinions!

A wise person once told me to learn from experience, so hopefully a colleague of mine allows me to help out as he is currently building some rowing rigs...

Anyway thanks everyone for sharing all the knowledge, I have been stalking all the posts gathering info although not posting.

If you are still reading this long update post, one thing that I am curious about is how do you restore the stripe on the side of the hull once you repair/repaint the hull?

I'm still having issues with my 46 horse chrysler. I'm getting rid of it. I'm not wanting to deal with points and such. She'll be right by the next boating season. I just need to find and 83 or newer johnson 50 -65 horse. Those things are pricey as hell. The enterior is brand new now. I even restored the glove box. The seat are another quandry. I dont want to get the old style take up 3/4 of your boat seats. I'm looking for swivel and padded seat with a metal back rest. Good luck with your boat. I can't wait to get my girl done. Be back around to trade war stories and ideas.

Thanks for the red stripe, that makes sense.

quick update, I checked on marine grade fir plywood price today from the only local place here in KC and I was pleasantly surprised the price has not increased from the numbers I had from 2008. $76 for 3/4" and $58 for 1/2".

Off to the hull to take measurements for calculations as I will be putting in a stringer system rather than the structural foam, does that sound like the best route or should I reconsider the structural foam?

Thanks for the comments it has made me rethink, yes the foam was originally structure bearing. Also the fiberglass hull does not seem thin. From what I have read these boats were fairly solid as built.


These Larson boats were are not typical stingers other than the keel. The 1x10's were laid on top of the foam and glassed over. Hopefully that made sense.
Here are a couple of pictures, one with the deck removed and the other with the fiberglass top cut off the foam & 1x10 area. The 1x10's sat on over the cross members and the foam was underneath. These cavities were not sealed so water was easily trapped.

At this point I have not removed the fiberglass sides of the foam area, only enough to get the water soaked 1x10 and foam removed. My original thought is would be fairly difficult to duplicate as it was built but looking at pieces going across those would support the 1x10's to allow a foam pour. Should I consider reusing the old fiberglass walls or start from scratch? If I removed the existing walls I would need to build a new form which could be removed once the foam sets up.

On the other hand a stringer on edge seems like it would strengthen it but would the benefits outweigh the original design.

Either way I plan to put foam back in.
