Ive Determined I Have A PreAlpha Drive Because The Top Of The case Has a Hole in it and the side by the drain plug is rough. I'm not sure of the year but the upper unit has a serial # 3252209 I Cant Seem To find any parts using that could it be wrong? also on the lower unit the top shaft spins but the propeller doesn't is there a shear pin inside of this that could be broken or is the gears inoperable? thanks in advance for your help :D

Ayuh,.... Donno why ya posted this in the Outboard forum, but I moved it here for ya,...

There's No such thing as a Pre-Alpha,... You have an MC-1 drive,...

My guess is, the lower unit is in Neutral,... Shift it into gear to lock it up,...

Re: Pre Alpha "R" Drive

Sounds like you should probably visit the "adults only" sticky at the top of the mercruiser forum (click on the hyperlink below) and do some reading/research and get ahold of a free outdrive service manual from that link for your particular drive. Good luck!

http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...tdrives/adults-only-no-exceptions-288430.html

might sound stupid but how do i determine the correct manual for my drive since idk when the drive was build but the boat was built in 88.

I cant seem to get that drive serial number to come up in the catalogs.... (3252209). Is that the number on the side of the outdrive, or on the transom?

Re: Pre Alpha "R" Drive

From the pictures you definitely have a MC-1 upper and lower unit, sometimes referred to in the Sierra parts catalog as simply a #1.
I would be curious to see what the rest of your drive assembly looks like, because as far as I know the MC-1 was out of production before '88. Although not recommended, the MC-1 drive will bolt up to the bell housing on the gimbal assembly of the Alpha-1.

Ayuh,.... Manual #1 should cover yer drive I believe,.... Possibly #2,...

Alpha 1 came out in I believe '83,....MR before that, 'n R before that, so the MC-1, or #1 drive ended 'bout '79 or '80,...

All 4 of 'em will interchange uppers, 'n lowers, or as complete drives,...

The Serial Number on the transom is OC382340 as far as i can read.

Re: Pre Alpha "R" Drive

I can't get that serial number to come up anywhere. It would be more useful to know if the trim sender is on the side of the Gimbel ring or on a cylinder inside the boat attached to the inner transom plate. Also, the engine serial number.

Re: Pre Alpha "R" Drive

The only number on the motor is imprinted directly on the motor so I believe this is the casting number..... would that help?

Ayuh,.... It appears yer motor, 'n transom assembly are original to the hull,...

Just a MC-1 drive bolted onto it,...

You'll find links to any, 'n All the info you need or want right here in Don'S Adults Only section, Mercruiser Info,...

The drive ya got will be covered in Manual #1, or #2, or #4, dependin' on how old the MC-1 is,...

Have ya looked in any of the links provided in this thread,..??
