Re: Pre Alpha "R" Drive

Ayuh,.... It appears yer motor, 'n transom assembly are original to the hull,...

Just a MC-1 drive bolted onto it,...

You'll find links to any, 'n All the info you need or want right here in Don'S Adults Only section, Mercruiser Info,...

The drive ya got will be covered in Manual #1, or #2, or #4, dependin' on how old the MC-1 is,...

Have ya looked in any of the links provided in this thread,..??
I've poked around in the mercruiser info section a bit and read some of the manual but thats as far as i have gotten. how can i find out the year of the drive if the serial numbers don't come up anywhere??? kinda of a sticky situation haha

Nope,... Not really,... Exactly what parts ya need,..??

There's only 2 different water pump housin's in the entire run of MC-1s,...
1 with an extra water port, 'n then it went away, never to be seen again,...
It's the same impeller as the later drives,...

For the drive to bellhousin' gasket, you can use any of the later gaskets, even the Alpha, Gen.II,...

Didn't that serial number come up in the serial number thread Don has in there,..??

I need both of those and the bearing for the knuckle cause its frozen and also the bearing under the top cover I'm not sure what the piece is called. and the seals for the entire upper unit since I'm in there i think i should replace them. no theres a lot of unknown things in there all i seen were 1 something serial numbers unless i was looking in the wrong spot.18-1161, 18-3214 those are the 2 parts that I've chosen thus far.

Ayuh,..... Find another outdrive,.... That 1s Junk, Scrap, Beat, No good,...

The cost of the parts ya need, F a a r r r exceeds that of just replacin' it,....

It's also a project that usually isn't done successfully by Diy'ers,...
Lotsa "Special" tools,...

Re: Pre Alpha "R" Drive

You may be able to get the parts cheaper than an assembly, but as soon as you go and replace a bearing, the whole thing has to be re-shimmed. Also the MC-1 had a weak spot on the drive shaft in the lower unit and used to brake. It would be good if you could upgrade to an Alpha.
If you are re-using the MC-1 lower, your part number for the water pump kit was wrong. It should be an 18-3217.

thank you i probably will upgrade to an alpha which one would be the right application for a 3.0L motor?…... i just wanted to get it assembled and have it working when i took it to the mechanic cause the wiring is all screwed on the engine and i know nothing about that but thats a new thread. I just bought this boat maybe 3 months ago.

Re: Pre Alpha "R" Drive

You need a 1.94:1 ratio for the 3.0L. BTW the wiring on that engine shouldn't be all that complicated.
