system-f,
Nice to hear your getting some good lake time and no problems from the engine.
Keep it rolling

Looks great. I like the swim platform. Glad to hear it's running well!

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I took the boat to Austin this last weekend and we hit Lake Austin and Lake Travis on Saturday. After leaving Lake Austin on our way to Lake Travis my dog was yelping on the dock like he had broken his leg. We rushed him to the vet and it turns out he is just a drama queen with a sprained leg.

I like the fact that I have used the boat without the interior as it lets me know exactly what I need. Right now one of the biggest things I need is seats :)

Side Note:

While cruising the party cove at Lake Travis we began to come head on a nice Cobalt bow rider at my lowest speed (the entire party cover is no wake). Even at idle my boat produces a slight wake which is really just some small ripples in the water. Once of the passengers in the cobalt yelled at me in a very angry and rather unpleasant tone "NO WAKE" I quickly returned his response with "I"M AT IDLE!" He sat down and shut up. Before coming to this point I had passed and waved at 3 county police officers and one city police officer. None of them seemed to have a problem with my no wake speed wake. Maybe I was wrong, but my boat won't go any slower with the 23p super cupped prop. Oh well....

It is Austin, everyone there knows what's best for you. Though, I do love that town.

Lake Travis had more boat patrol than any other lake I have ever been on. At least 6 in the party cove alone!

That's a lot. At Grapevine they come out in force at the beginning of the season and during the holidays. Last year on the Flower Mound side they started inspecting boats as people hauled out. If you had too many empty cans, you get to walk the line.

Hey, check my thread and tell me what you think about my seat pedestal mounting idea.

Starboard bench seat is built as far as rough frame work goes. It still needs to be fixed to the boat and finished out. I am going with open front benchs, 7ft by 15" and the rear section for a cooler front section tabbed at the bottom for bumpers and ropes. I suck at wood work so the interior is not going to look great but will be very functional and open so it can air out. As of now I am out of money and the dog's vet bills haven't been cheap. Thankfully wood IS cheap and foam for the cushions seems to be the only cost prohibitive material I need.

I am thinking of doing a plywood trim on the front of the benches with a grey carpet to outline it. The bulkhead between the engine and the cockpit will also be carpet lined and it looks like I will be able to get away with some pretty thin foam on the swim platform as 1" stuff provides more than enough cushion.

For now it will be bare benchs on the lake, though.

system-f,
Bare wood seats are better then buckets. Do what you can when you can.

I've seen a few boats setup with pups in mind. They used carpet up high (top of engine cover, tops of gunnels) so that their dogs can get a good grip on and off the docks.

Throwables and life jackets can double as cusions.

I guess that teaches people to sink the empties

I caught one guy sinking empties....OHHhh that pissed me off. And cigarette butts in the water!!!!!!!!! nasty. I am getting so fed up with the crap at the Eagle Mountain party cove and the fact that the lake is just all too rough in the wind. Yesterday 2ft swells were average. Today we are heading out to the Lake Granbury River (Brazos) which is much more wind protected.

Bench seat is in, front is carpeted just need to cover it with a cushion.

I like the idea of putting carpet on my engine cover/sun platform instead of having a cushion. It might not look as good, but will be far more durable considering people/dog will be climbing over it more than laying on it.

I think the rear top deck is going to get painted with traction compound as well as the swim platform...too slick.

Finally I top coated my swim platform with rustoleum regular white and it seems to be super tough. No nicks or scratches yet and the wakeboard has been drug on it many times.

One thing I forgot: Yesteday I was in the middle of a large tie-up and got many compliments on the PMSb. People were surprised at the amount of work I had done which pales in comparision to some of the restores here, but still...it felt good.

Interior is now 90% done. I just have to paint the deck, install one more bench and finish bench cushions. My sun deck has carpet as I am afraid the dog will tear up a vinyl cushion. The interior does look homemade, but neat, clean and functional. I will constantly be doing upgrades, but for now I am going to use her. I will post pictures once the interior is more done.

Functional = low stress on you and your dog(s).

Are you going with that poxi paint on the deck? I've just about talked the wife into the idea myself. How do you think it would hold up?

I really like the way this guy did his: http://www.classicmako.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9592&whichpage=25

If you haven't seen this thread, it's worth a read. The guy has some serious skills.

WOW that guy has some seriously awesome skills.

This guy has done some a amazing work too and I hope to be able to do as well in my next rebuild which won't be so hurried.

For my deck paint I am probably going to use something readily available, inexpensive and mix it with an anti skid compound. I do not expect a long life out of it (and plan on having to try something else), but this is the POOR man's Skiboat and I want to show people what can be done with little money and report back. For example my interior has cost me $400 so far and that was with $200 for the pedestal and chair and includes EVERYTHING but the foam.

Thanks for the link. I likes me some good boat porn. Can we say that here?

I was thinking a $30 can (maybe 2) of EasyPoxy would cover the floor along with some nonskid. But I've never used it. Am I way off base?

Throw those pics up of your interior.

It is amazing how far the easypoxy goes and the undercoater. I am going to try rustoleum on the floor as it has stood up amazingly well on my swim platform.

Some action shots, after all this is what my project is about. I realize non of us are professional and my wake is dismal compared to that of a ski boat, but it sure does work for us!
