Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

I did a little number crunching, and the honey comb product compared to a decent plywood covered in 1.5 CMS is basically a wash. Anyone have any thoughts? I think I can deal with the bracing issue with a little welding and aluminum bar stock. I think I will call the honeycomb supplier on Tuesday to see if they have had customers who used it on a boat. I bet they have....almost makes me want to rip the floor out of Miss Morgan and dot it again with this stuff!

if you do drop down seating for a swim up bar have the side railing on that side swing over and be the bar top?

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

arch, i can do a ext grade 4x8 ply in poly glass and gell for under 80 bux.

but the nomex or aulm does look good...but, how would you do the edges of the board? or would you lust leave them rough and go with the rug thing?

see if you can get a weight on the 4x12 or the 4x8. what would shipping of that stuff be?......

20% more expensive than glassed exterior ply and I would assume 0% chance of rot... too bad you they don't have specs on that specific lot, but it's got to be pretty strong if they're used in aircraft floors! Wonder what the distance between braces is under this stuff on an aircraft? Looks very cool to me.

JignGrub is always touting this stuff.

As for titling that motor, has the PO EVER had a title? Is there any Oklahoma Registration numbers on it? If so, then you will not have to much of an issue.
I got a title for a 1956 Rude' and had NOTHING. Took a while but got it done.

Have you thought about using used Road Signs for your Deck. I think there's a salvage in OKC that has em. 1/4" thick Aluminum. Fab up a superstructure and voila' Permananet, Never Rot Deck.

That sounds like a good idea....I was sort of thinking along the same lines.

The boat has an aluminum extrusion that trims out the edge of the carpet / deck. I could reuse that or a smaller carpet bar that is made for stair nosing. I'm not sure what shipping will cost, I'm guessing 100$ or so. I'm interested in what they have to say about fastening it to the deck. I wonder if you have to use a lot of fasteners or something with a big head. Seems like it would be easy to have a screw pull through the skin.

Good question, I think mine is 16" on center. I'll check that, but I can't imagine it being longer since it has 1/2" plywood on it.

Wood, the motor is from Arkansas, someone told me they are a bill of sale state, but I don't know that for sure. The guy got the boat when he bought the pontoon, both previous owners bought the pontoon with the intent of rebuilding it.....luck for me they didn't, lol! Well I'm headed out to work on some of my chores.....need to get them done so I can have some time on the boat. I also need to fit in rebuilding Miss Morgans tilt / trim.

Found the weight, looks like it is about 24 #s a sheet, cant beat that! Looks like it is used for flooring in cargo planes, so I'm guessing it is pretty tough stuff. The faces are epoxy and fiberglass.

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

I did make some progress this weekend.....but this will be going pretty slow this fall, I have 3 outside projects that I need to get done before it gets cold. I will keep working on her, but I think I have a lot of planning to do next. Sunday I managed to get the console off and the rest of the deck off. I'm going to pick up my pressure washer this week and give her a bath....she is covered in plywood "dust" and dust.

I called the company selling to composite panel yesterday....got transferred around and didn't find out much other than they think you use a glue to bond it to the framing.....but didn't know what kind of glue. So then I called the manufacturer....again I was transferred around, until I was ask to send them an e-mail so they could have R&D research my questions...gees! You would think "how do you attach this stuff" would be an easy question! I'm going to put an e-mail together on it today and send it to them.

This is going to be an awesome thread.

yeah.... i agree.

those panels......since you dont have to worry about rot....can be glued....screwed....riveted. whatever you want.

i think cutting will be easy with a standard circ saw. what are the deck measurements? is it a size that requires a lot of cutting?....or is it a lay down situation?

Re: Pontoon rebuild / redesign

oh.....by the way...... i have been playing with mold making lately.....vaccu forming.... 2 part pour in or injection molding....

the way i see it........you need 2 figure heads.....one for each toon. ......what do you think will look best.....a naked lady....or a lady with a flowing dress kinda thing?

(FYI a figure head is the sculpture on the bow pulpit of old wooden sailing ships)

Oh I'm thinking topless for sure! Maybe it will give the girls an idea, lol :D

There will be some cutting, but not a lot. I agree, this looks like a skill saw or table saw type material.

WA SSV197 thanks for sending me your drop down bench idea. Its pretty close to what I was thinking....but I'm wondering if the seating should be perpendicular to the boat kind of like a picnic bench? Maybe if floats....I'm just thinking that being perpendicular to the boat might be better, you can see what is going on in the boat, plus what is going on on the beach? Any ideas? I'm wondering if it collapses and slides up under a couch or something on the boat?

Love it, my first boat was a trashed pontoon restore, long before I knew anything about i-boats... Y'all would have been a great help to me back then... LOL... I'm looking forward to seeing this one come together and have no doubts it will be a great one...

The only problem with having it pivot out 90 degrees would be coming up with a way that it won't be like a bad fence gate and have the lateral stress on the pivot arm. Also you would have to ballast the opposite side of the boat with the extra weight sticking 8 feet past the pontoon. I am sure the entire thing could fold up though.

I'm thinking if I go this route, that the connection would not be a ridge connection between the bar and the pontoon. I'm envisioning the that it might be more like a floating picnic table....mini pontoon...I need to do some sketching and drawing, but I have been up to my eyeballs in the yard and at work.

Ah, I was way over engineering this then. I was thinking if you used a pivot arm you could attach an outrigger of some sort to float it between the pontoon and the outrigger, then the stress would be much less on the connection point.

I had visions of a jib crane in my head.
