I have owned trucks all my life with the exception of a 1972 cougar convertable (DAS BOAT). It had a 4v clevleland in it, and when you got to 110 mph things would start to float, valves etc.

Before the 55MPH speed limit, Nevada had no speed limit as long as you were in a rural area. When the feds demanded a 55MPH limit, Nevada created a statute stating that if you were doing less than 75MPH the cops could only give you a warning. Of course the cops never stopped anyone for just a warning. Clever huh! Now it's 65MPH max. I can remember doing 90 in my '49 merc. and having HP go by so fast that I could barely see what it was. Ah; the good old days.

the problem I saw in MT was people aren't used to more than about a 15mph difference in traffic, if traffic was flowing around 75 and you came clipping through at 90 or 95 you spent all day getting cut off because people weren't used to the closure rate.

I was in a little civic running from billings to missoula at something around 100, I passed an altima from idaho and he fell in behind me, just beyond livingston I passed a semi, and the semi thought he could tuck in the gap, cutting off the altima resulting in a pretty ugly wreck... I did make missoula in 4 hours and change though :)

that was 1997 so no limits

Would not want to hit a deer at 70 either.

Been there, done that about 7 years ago. It was nighttime and I was driving my fully loaded 2500 Suburban into Great Falls, on I-15. I also had a double depth trailer hitch rack that was loaded two high with tote boxes and ice chests. This extra weight, off the back, caused the 'burb to sit nose high.

We were coming down a grade, doing 70. I was in the fast lane. A short distance ahead there were two large deer, one was off on the right shoulder and the other was crossing toward the center divider.

Being so heavily loaded I did not want to make any sudden moves so I just eased the 'burb over into the slow lane. Just as I got there, the deer crossing the road turned on his heels and headed back across the road in front of me.

I never even had a chance to hit the brakes. Like in slow motion I remember seeing the top of his back right even with the front hood line....and then he was gone. With a couple of quick thuds, he was under and out the back end of the 'burb. I never even took my foot off the accelerator.

I looked in the rear view mirror but it was dark and no one was close behind me. I never saw any evidence.

Howsomever, I was sure that the front end of my suburban was not a pretty sight. I pulled off the interstate, at the first off ramp in Great Falls, and drove to a lit gas station parking lot.

I got out with great trepidation. As I walked around the front I could not believe that nothing was out of order. On closer inspection the plastic licence plate holder, on the front bumper was squashed but not broken.

When I got back home I took a heat gun to it and straighted it right up, all the while recognizing that I got off extremely lucky. If it hadn't been for that heavily loaded hitch rack, the front of the 'burb would have picked that deer up and thrown him right thru the windshield.

I counted my blessings that day!

They can f you up. I saw many when I ran a bodyshop. In my area we would have 2-3 a week come in for estimates.

Here's a good one.

Re: Police Officers, please skip this thread

After my bachelor party very many moons ago, we drove the 100 miles from Billings to Forsyth MT, running between 130-140MPH, in a Supra turbo. Not another soul in sight. Probably not the smartest thing we've ever done, but certainly not the dumbest, either. Part of the lifelong bond, with my high school friends, who managed to survive to this day without hurting anyone else.

Another time, my wife did not want to tell me (heard by the grapevine), she and her brother, drove our V6 Camry 130MPH through most of WY, going home to CO.

Those western interstates were design after and built better than, the German Autobahns, with 1/100 of the traffic volume.

Sure "keeping it safe" and following each and every law, to the letter is what everyone "wants", but it was calulated risk and more than a little bit of bravado, is what gave us airplanes, moon landings and professional bar-b-q.

Now I mostly just drive the speed limit. ;)

That durango photo just doesn't add up. Not saying it's fake but there is more than meets the eye there. no damage to the bumper so the deer must have jumped and destroyed the drivers side. But how did it end up in that position on the passengers side?? Something tells me we won't be able to ask the driver.

Deer jumped off of a bridge from what I remember, and I think the driver survived.

I saw an adult deer in the back seat of a 1960 Chevy once. Middle aged lady driver wrecked her pants, but was otherwise unscathed. Made a bloody mess of the car.

Here's some grilled venison, by a BMW at speed.

BTW to the above, you won't get anywhere near a racetrack around here for $30. if you want a go at it on your bike it will run $150 - $300 I've heard it's even more for cars to run. that's not including safety equipment and parts.
tracks only have certain days available for bikes and private cars to run. not saying it's not worth it, just that it's not cheap. and it won't get you where you're going .

I should have clarified that I am now old and that was some years back!!

But I will tell you,
coming down a straight and hitting your brake marker, rolling the bike over you slide off the bike and find the pavement with your knee, the rear tire struggling to hold rear grip as the front begins to slip, leaning to that point where you know your crankcase is an inch from hitting pavement passing it at 90 mph. As you apex the turn your fingers release the front brake and grab the throttle the rear slides consistently and your knee loses contact as your bike straightens up but you cant sit back in your seat because your still in the turn, bars are all crossed up ,and you realize your front end is in the air so you slide forward to change balance and keep 160 hp pulling but not enough to force the front back onto the ground, grab another gear, slide back into your seat and the front touches back down and your looking for your next brake marker.

Tooooo Much fun.

Well I've got a couple but this is my 35th anniversary Camaro built by SLP (Street Legal Performance of California). Powered with a LS-1 (350) pumping out just over 430 HP according to the dyno. Hook it up to a custom rear end (shortened to allow wider tires) and a more aggressive gear ratio and it's quick by any standard. Larger tires, stiffer suspension (LE-1), close ratio steering, and bigger brakes and calipers. It makes for a nice package.

Nice car. SLP does/did good work with the Fbodys. I've got an 01 SLP Firehawk. Real easy to hit 100+ with those LS-1's without batting an eye.

Indeed, they aren't even breathing hard at 100. Just my humble opinion, they are the almost perfect execution of the 350 SBC and hit a great balance of performance and longevity. I know several guys with 100K - 150K on their engines and they still run strong.

The amazing part to me is that if I set the cruise at 70ish I am getting 26-27 MPG. I see lots of "old school" 350s built by buddies and pro shops and they get about the same HP but are lucky to get half the mileage. They also seem to need to be tweaked on constantly.

They are indeed a great engine. Midrange seems endless on it. I havent driven any of the newer LS motors yet but im happy with this one, and yes the mpg is great on them as well, especially with the sixth gear on the manual trannys.

the rear seats in a camaro/firebird can hardly be called seats. Unless you are extremely short or just dont have legs. :D
