:D Havn fun huh Bubba...I used to do that once upon a time but ins rates made me give it up.. One of the reason i started boating again..No radar on the water yet...;)

One intresting thing about boating if you have no rear view mirror in your boat did you know you could run 3-4 miles down river with the coast gaurd in hot pusuit and get away with....I knew this guy who did just that. I guess the gaurd was a little concerned when he cut the stick and looked around in amazement..They seemed a bit stiff moving around there was a 2 foot chop on the water that day or so i was told. Some peoples kids...;)

Re: Police Officers, please skip this thread

You know, you touched on a side issue that has always made me shake my head, big rigs and speed limits. No one will ever convince me a 80,000 lb truck is safer at 70 than I am in my car at 100. I can out stop, corner, and accelerate him by at least a factor of 5 times. It irks me that the speed limit is the same for both of us. (Ok, just my rant...)

Rant noted and now I'll rant with my disagreement ;)

Differing speed limits on open interstates have nothing to do with with stopping, cornering or acceleration and no one would compare a big truck with a sports car. These limits were based on a bad idea ( the "P" word), that for most states who have wised up, is finally going away.

Split speed limits between trucks and cars on interstates, causes more accidents, not less.

Slow trucks, trying to pass other slower trucks, blocks the passing lane for passenger cars, who are driving 10-15+ MPH, faster than the trucks. Cars may not slow down in time and rear-end the truck, or leave the road to avoid a collision. Passenger cars also get impatient with the slower trucks and start weaving, or passing trucks on the right, at higher speed. Real safe. :(

Since the idiots running the roads in OH and IL (among other states) have finally wised up and set the speed limits the same for cars/trucks (on limited access interstates anyway), there are less accidents and traffic, especially heavy traffic, flows much better. There is a noticable difference where they are not the same.

In KY an WV, where both trucks and cars can drive 70MPH, traffic moves along very good and trucks don't block the passing lanes nearly as much, for passenger cars who want to go faster, since most trucks (including mine) are pretty happy at 70MPH.

IN Improved things by change car/truck from 65/55 to 70/65. They will really have their act together when it is 70/70.

When I lived in Eastern CO, our family took a road trip to Rapid City, SD and Devil's tower, WY, over many very smooth, secondary state roads, some going in a straight line for as far as the eye can see.

We drove about 95MPH most of the time in a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder, on perfectly smooth interstate roads with very little traffic. road just as smooth and tight, as if we were doing 65MPH.

The newer vehicles with ride-tuned suspensions handle much faster speeds without even blinking. A roll-over would have been ugly, but not much more ugly, than a roll-over at 70MPH.

I hear you guys I really do, been there done that so heres my advice. There is a place in nearly every state where you can do this except its perfectly legal. Its called a race track. Every race track I know of has amateur nights or private days for you guys that just want to go fast.

The reason I began Racing is because I just couldn't control myself on the road, So I started to hit the race track on private days, pay $30 get a quick safety check, read and sign the rules and your on the track. When things got to the point where I thought I needed more I went to race school, Safety Wired my bike, borrowed a trailer and blam I was racing my FZR 600. For less then $6000 invested total I was going 130 mph, putting my knee on the ground at 80 mph and having the time of my life,a year later I had a FZR 600 and 1000, and a GSXR 750, I would be in 7 races every other sunday.

So that brings me to the day when racing saved my life. I was in a race and collided with another bike, then got ran over by another. Less then an hour after my crash I had a hole drilled in my head to relieve the building pressure within my skull and was on a plane to Denver. Some are probably asking how racing saved my life? Simple answer, the ambulance reached me less then 1 minute after my crash, I was at the hospital in 10 minutes, you will never get that kind of response anywhere else.

Guys if you need to go fast I am so with you but go to a race track where you are in the safest environment possible for YOU, surrounded by others that want to go fast too, the rules are pretty simple if you and another want to race then go ahead, if you don't want to race then move over and let the faster guy/s pass. Plus it supports your local racetrack as well and how can you beat that? Also if you have never tried racing on two wheels your all missing out!!

..."Unfortunately the feds said post a speed limit or lose funding"...

The Feds? You mean the government? The people who work for us? You mean the people who do our bidding?

I love dirt I was just never any good at it! I rode my buddies WR 426 I think? and I had a blast with it, brought it back 3 hours later! First time I had been on a dirtbike in 20 yrs or so. When I turned 19 though I loved crotch rockets, living in Colorado with miles of winding roads oh baby. Now I am 42 haven't had a sportbike since the accident(can't do that to my parents again).

Yer dreaming man. Once when I was going around a clover leaf with an empty flat bed, the sedan that tried to follow me spun out on the bridge behind me. Little old lady in it had to be pried off the steering wheel.

And if you think you can out stop a modern semi, yer dreaming. The trick is that if you draft them, be within a foot or two so that if they have to dynamite the brakes, you're only going a couple of miles faster than them when you make contact, long before you hit the brakes. Any more distance and you wipe out your grill and their ICC bumper.

My astro gets 26 mpg at 85 mph, 2 feet behind a 45 footer.

didn't work so well in 96-about 98 when MT went back to reasonable and prudent.. caused problems. Mainly the tickets they issued were seen by the insurance companies as reckless driving citations.

be careful in CO, expensive fines and hungry agencies. I got a ticket not long ago for 75 in a 65, I was so close to the 75 zone I was 200 yards beyond the 75 sign when I pulled over. 180 bucks I guess the county needed more than I. 75 on the nose too, not 74, not 76. LoL.

there is something fun about going "arrest me fast" on the highway, any guesses how fast an LS1 GTO goes with a procharger supercharger and a T56? I can tell you
it'd go faster if 6th was a littler shorter.

Up until just a few years ago Montana was the same, "Safe and prudent speed for conditions". But then when crossing Montana it was rare to see another air breathing mamal of any kind. Unfortunately the feds said post a speed limit or lose funding. :(

quite a bit more than "a few years ago" and a brief stint from 96 or so when the federal limit at 55 ended and was over by late 99... Prior to that was the mid late 70's, I believe.

This is all assuming it hasn't changed in a few years, I haven't really been back....

Someone said;

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, totally worn out with a bottle of wine in one hand, a good cigar in the other and shouting "Holy Shat, what a ride".

Works for me!

i had a shirt that said something very close to that, my son has it tatooed on his arm.

I'm just the opposite... I suck at riding street. I mean anyone can ride a streetbike (just like anyone can ride a dirtbike), but I never felt comfortable getting my knee anywhere close to the ground! I'd love to take a GSXR1000 to a track and get some instruction, but I think I'll still be scared! :)

you don't have to touch a knee to be fast. it comes with time just like riding dirt. you get more comfortable and pretty soon your butt is coming off the side and your into the ride naturally.

BTW to the above, you won't get anywhere near a racetrack around here for $30. if you want a go at it on your bike it will run $150 - $300 I've heard it's even more for cars to run. that's not including safety equipment and parts.
tracks only have certain days available for bikes and private cars to run. not saying it's not worth it, just that it's not cheap. and it won't get you where you're going .

If you want to go fast on public roads you need to look into Open Road Racing.
They close off a section of Hwy and you try to go as fast as you can with out breaking out of your speed class.

it's getting harder and harder to find tracks, they keep closing down due to land development, or insurance, or whatever reason.
