I and a business friend had to go out to Colorado (Walensburg) for a day or two unexpectedly and we decided to make a road trip out of it instead of flying. I haven't had the sports car on the road much and decided to take it as there was just the two of us and a little luggage. Drove out on the interstates (mostly) and it was, well, boring so on the trip back we decided to go cross country on two lane highways.
We sort of argued about which way would be faster as the interstate is posted at 70 MPH while the two lanes are all 65 but shorter routes. I told him not to worry, I'd "make up the difference".
We took highway 10 east bound because when I looked on the map there is nothing on it for 70 miles or so and it connected to highway 96 with nearly nothing on it. Highway 10 comes out of the mountains and gradually drops away (alttitude) to the high plains and its a flat straight road with almost no traffic (we seen 3 cars total) so I decided to "stretch the legs" a bit. Man, I forgot what it was like and how fast you can cover ground when you can run a solid 100 MPH+ for a long distance. I had a grin ear to ear the entire time!!!
Long and short of it, the trip back took two hours less than the drive out and was a heck of a lot more fun!!! The down side, all good roads come to an end and we had to get back on the interstate for the last half of the drive and there were highway patrol around every curve and hiding spot. Traveling 70 seemed like we could get out and walk as fast.
My personal take? Life would be better if we raised the speed limit on the interstates to 100 MPH as they were designed for...
