Pet surgery cost😮

My 5 year old lab Tucker ruptured his CCL, equivalent to human ACL. He is in a lot of pain, walking is strain for him. Goes in for surgery this coming Wednesday. I always said I’d put a dog down before I paid a ton of money on a surgery. Easier said than done. Not only paying for surgery $$$$ but will be building a ramp off the back deck for him.

After this I’m buying pet insurance being we have two labs both at 5 years old.

Thanks. If you don’t mind me asking who are you using for insurance? I’ve looked at several companies and so far progressive seems to be a solid option . Of course it won’t help with this issue. Surgeon says about 70% of dogs that get this injury do the same thing to the other leg within a few years.

I had the same surgery on my lab. It was expensive but he fully recovered and we hunted together for a few years after. I also left him at the vet for the first week after the surgery to start his rehab. It cost more but was worth it. Also get a ramp for getting in and out of your truck. Here’s what I got. I started using it for all my dogs because jumping in and out of the truck takes a major toll on their joints, damages their joints and bones and causes arthritis.

FH, ours is through Pets Best, which we purchased through Costco. Progressive was also a good option, but the deal through Costco was slightly better coverage for a little less money. Pets best is more tailorable to your specific needs. They have a discount for multiple pets, too.

The things we do for our pets. They are family after all. I dropped 6k on one for a single surgery to remove some cancer and she only made it for another year. I sore I would never do it again.
As of yesterday I have 7k into my currant pup in the last 2 years alone.

Had a stray kitty show up in the winter.----Then showed up injured.----$1000 in surgery.----Gave us a 20% discount since it was a stray.-----No regrets at all and he helps keep mice away around the yard.

Both my wife’s dogs eat socks. Both of them have needed surgery at $2,500 a pop

I love my pets more than most family members. I don't question the vet costs. Mos vet surgeries are between 0.7 and 2 boat units

Heck, I even spent 1.5 boat units on a cat once....

That's a nice looking dog by the way. We've had two that needed that surgery. Rehabed both at home and they are both running great after 8 years.

So talking to several pet insurance companies. Since my dog has no insurance now, even if I buy a policy now and in the future he tears his other CCL on his other knee it won’t be covered. Its called a bilateral exclusion. All pet insurance companies have this. Really sucks!

As far as CCL I believe it’s rare that you will ever have to worry about the other leg needing ccl Surgery. And of the several hunting labs I’ve had over the last 40 years only my one lab required it. The other leg was fine.

Our pets ARE family, no question about it !! I would probably do for my dog the same I would do for my child !! About the same to me !! I am an old softy when it comes to my pup !!

I guess I have been lucky with dog injuries over the years. Currently we have 3 dogs the oldest is 15 the youngest is 12 they are all on the DNR list. I love dogs but the dogs have had a good run and quality of life.

It’s been 4 days since Tucker had his knee repaired. I have to say he’s been a trouper so far. He’s got about a five or six inch incision on the inside of his leg. Big thing right now is to keep him still best we can and keep him from licking his incision. Of course they supplied an E-collar( cone of shame) to prevent licking. Can stand to see him deal with that so one of us is with him all the time to prevent licking, and standing too much. He’s never on a leash either but if he goes to lick a little nudge stops him. Tough on him as he normally has 100 percent freedom here. We do use the cone at night. Makes for a long boring day.
So here I sit with him out on the deck bored and typing messages

Poor guy just wants to run I’m sure. It amazing how resilient animals are. Kinda of like me as a kid. I didn’t care about pain I just wanted to be doing something. Those days are long gone.
I broke a couple toes years ago and didn’t do anything about. A year later I ended up having them broken again by the doc the bones were cut shorter and screwed back together then all the hardware had to be removed 9 months later.
You would think I would have learned to go to the doc when thing happen but I didn’t.
A couple months ago I stabbed my hand with a razor knife a split second after I thought to myself don’t this your going to stab yourself.
I could have used a few stitches but instead I closed it up with superglue and sterile strips.
It did heal but now I don’t have any feeling in that area and something is starting to find its way out.
Must have been something in there that shouldn’t be. I’ll never learn.
