Re: Pacific North West Gathering.

And then's there's Sturgeon fishing for those who want to catch sea monster's

http://www.nwfish.com/Sturgeon/sturgeon_fisheries.htm

Most coastal rivers and bays of the pacific northwest have sturgeon in them

at some point during the year. The best sturgeon fishing in the world for keeper sturgeon is found in Astoria Oregon in the Columbia river estuary. Limits of sturgeon are very common while fishing in Astoria or Ilwaco Washington. The sturgeon migrate to the mouth of the Columbia to feed heavily on the abundant food sources found there. The fishing in the Columbia estuary picks up around May and continues to be good throughout the summer months. The majority of the fish found here are in the keeper size range of 42 to 60 inches. The Sturgeon begin there migration back up river in the fall months following the salmon runs and they stay upriver throughout the winter months feeding on smelt, freshwater clams,
keeperlimit.jpg
crawfish, crappie and so on until the late spring when they begin there trip down the Columbia river back to the abundant estuary food sources. Tillamook bay also has an excellent sturgeon fishery as well as Yaquina Bay, these are primarily winter sturgeon fisheries because of the abundance of crabs when there is little fresh water coming into the bays makes it tough to keep your baits on the hooks.

:D Do we have a Belly flop going on here? While there was talk of Portland there have been a few well more than a few that would like to go to the bar area, The fishing would be @ it's best as well a crabbing and along with numerous sighseeing as well as being remote and not have to worry about the native's,

Does this preclude anyone from going if so PM me, If not It's AUG 3-4 and 5 for those who wsh, can we see some potential hand's....Lib's Dem's Conseravtive's, independent's......just no Taliban could make for a big argument.......;)

Re: Pacific North West Gathering.

I haven't been hanging out in DC for a while now but just caught sight of this thread out of the corner of my eye.

I live only about 45 minutes from the bar, so if I am not working on Saturday, I might be able to come on down. I am definitely working Sunday though.

As for fish, they sure weren't in last year this early. I was having to go out in the ocean to find anything almost all through August. I don't know if I will have the big boat back together by then, so the ocean is only an option on small days for me in the Valco.

There is crabbing starting up by then, but let me warn folks: don't leave your pots unattended, especially on weekends. I used to just drop my pots on the way out to sea to fish and pick them up at the end of the day, but last year I lost 5 pots to thieves when doing this. Either take your pots out across the bar and drop them on the outside somewhere (most thieves are too lazy to go that far) or tend them on the spot and then take them with you when you head out. Weekends are the worst time for thieves, but I lost one on a wednesday even, and you can expect NO help from enforcement.

crabbing.jpg

That's the penn, notice the yellow line, good place to run a pot line for crab's, now if we get good weather the beach's are quite nice and the water is all most alway's calm makes for a nice beach gathering point and can be driven to by car or truck

I fully intend to try and do some Salmon fishing along with crabbing, Hopefully some water sport's aka tubing or wakeboarding. As to going over the bar for ocean salmon the jury is still out there, if she's a very quiet day im in......
But there's plenty of fishing from bouy 10 and down along with the gator's (sturgeon) so all in all there should be a lot of activite's to keep one busy. Mrs Gunner doesnt like big swells so im quite sure i will have some room in the boat for those who need it, anyway's let the thread build and i sure we will have a great time......... Just one thing, the Hammond marinia does not take credit cards so bring some cash........:D Good facility there just cheap..

Haunt here's a good link for you to get a little insight to the bar, do a search "Crossing the Bar" Notice one thing, they generally tell you what not to do rather than what to do.........and if it's smooth its a cake walk..

http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?p=790453

 but if she's bad, im not going been there done that:Hit the wave at a sharp angle and hold your beer really high, now when at the top if you think your gonna flip.......think really fast and come up with a better plan... :D

I will be able to cross the bar only if it is a small day. My big boat will definitely still be in pieces by then... :(

Re: Pacific North West Gathering.

I've been out about a dozen times or more. A few times in my 16' open skiff and then the rest on the 19 footer.

I never cross on an ebb, only the flood or slack. I check with the CG by VHF for a bar report, and then I follow the red buoy line out. I usually start fishing around the CR buoy, and go north or south from there and last year I also went west as far as I could go on my limited fuel supply.

Main thing to remember is that speed is not your friend, good boat handling skills are. Go nice and slow, and stay perpendicular to the waves. It's not that bad if you pick the time and day correctly.

I did have one hairy crossing in the skiff when we miscalculated the max ebb and came in too early. Since then I always check with the CG for current info.
