I think I should start an official restore thread in the Restoration forum. Or can I have this one moved????

Not sure of the proper etiquette. I do have an old pocket dictionary w/ proper etiquette from 1936..... not sure if it help me though:lol:.

You can ask one of the mods, that's what they are there for.

But all the best builders are right here.

Hey T, I think you can keep it here in the SC forum. We have a most of the SC restos right here and a only a few are in the general resto forum. As far as etiquette goes and your 1936 dictionary, glassers weren't even around then. So why play with the modern guys? They are unfairly biased.

Yeah, it's the glasser's that are biased

Personally, I like having some fiberglass dust laying around to use as a cauterizing agent for all those nasty cuts ya get working on a tinny :twitch:

But that's just me...

Anyone using heat to stretch vinyl upholstery around corners (I read an upholstery thing on the net). My dash has a back to back, inside and an outside corners. First attempt to do it w/out heat I was able to get it pretty smooth, bit the underside of the dash was not what I was looking for in a finished dash. Anyone with experience into doing that "S" curve will be appreciated.

I'm going to give the heat gun a go tomorrow. I have enough material for a couple more tries at it. I picked up some really nice marine material for $4 yard off craigslist to practice with. Really nice stuff just ugly colors.

Heat works great. Used to upholster bus seats, the small ones, and a bunch of other stuff. The pile of covers sat under a heat lamp and softened them up.

The heat gun can really help on the corners, smoothing out wrinkles and getting them tight. Use with care because it can ruin the texture if it gets too hot.

The other thing that helps is a thin layer of foam under the vinyl or fabric, 1/4 to 1/2" low density and wrap the foam around the edge and the corners. Takes the edge off the corner, masks small imperfections in the wood and helps prevent cuts in the vinyl when it gets hit or bumped.

Some of those heat guns will burn the hair off you knuckles. Have fun.

On the SS 201 I used the heat gun for the 8 inside corners on the front of the rear deck on the third try, the first two just wasted vinyl. Use your fingers for temp control, if it's too hot for them it's too hot for the vinyl. The other trick my upholstery Guru gave me was glue, use some 3M 90 around the curves with the heat and it is amazing how much nicer the job turns out.

I think it was JB that successfully and cheaply painted vinyl... might be something to consider. Cheap vinyl... some inexpensive paint... much cheaper than new vinyl.... real bottom feeder stuff there! :):D

I can make the curves look nice on the top and front edge. Its the underside of the overhang at the inside to outside curve I don't like. I think I'm going to cover it w/ a plate. I got my second attempt done today w/ the same results as the 1st. Just not happy w/ it. I'm short of material now. Good thing it was cheap.

Re: Oh no. Here I go again.......

Run double welting along the underside of the front edge, maybe back a 1/4" +/-, after you run the topside vinyl over it. Trim the upper vinyl off flush to the back side of the welting.

Unless you're looking up at it from below, no exposed vinyl edges. And the welting will hide the funky wrinkles & etc of the inner/outer corners...... And it gives you a seam to hide the staples...

Picked up more material at JA's yester day and picked up a heavier vinyl for the dash. Same results. I'm just going to cover the underside little corner w/ a plate it will never be seen for the most part anyway (I need to move on). The material still gave out on the underside of the overhang as before. The underside has to have the material go in both directions. It was never covered on the original either, Now I know why. I for some reason thought I could it .

Dilemma. I have a spare 65 hp Merc (1967) in nice shape. Or, I have line on a mid to early 70's Chrysler 130hp w/ t&t owner wants $350 for it. The guy says ran it lasty year and has 125 psi in each cycl.. his boat was junk.

Hmmmmm....

No parts support any more, personally I would shy away from that. Older OMC's and Merc's have good parts support. OMC more so than Mercs.

A few years ago I found a Rude 135 on a "project", guy was asking $650, bought for $350, salvaged parts, scrapped the boat, sold the trailer. I was going to use the motor on an old FG boat but went to the bright side. Sold the motor. Made some nice $$$$ on the whole deal.

Post up in the Chrysler forum and they can let you know about parts. Is it Frank A that is the Chrysler guru up there? Maybe some one else. 130 horses would move her real nice.
