Picked up this 1981 hustler skip jack, 14', 60hp mariner. Engine good, Lowrance depth finder works, minn kota mid 80's trolling motor works. However, all wood, all is rotten so here I go.
Read alot of posts on here bout transoms and stringers, very helpful info.
Never done a boat let alone fiberglass, I spent 2 1/2 yrs rebuilding a 64 Impala SS with no previous experience so let's try a boat..🙂🙂

I would stick with restoring cars.Way more straight forward and possibly a money maker depending on the vehicle you are restoring.The free boat will only have value to you so you better REALLY love the boat.Charlie

Suggestions or comments appreciated....

This boat had stringers/foam all way to transom with no way for water to drain to keel. I am stopping these stringers and foam 2in from transom. The stringers only provide 4in up onto face of transom on two and only 2in up on other 2 ( not much support on a 22in tall transom). My plan is to lay stringers then floor then a 6 or 8in 3/4 plywood gusset tabbed to floor and transom. New transom is 2 3/4 marine plywood laminated w/csm..

on stringers. I have left the radius corners of fiberglass that wrapped the old stringers, I'm thinking I should just go ahead and cut these out so I can put in fillets at base of new stringers. I'm assuming this will be a stronger connection to hull.
The taller stringers only had csm on one side, expanding foam on other, I believe I need cut out this old glass to wrap them fully?

When wrapping stringers I am reading 1708 up the sides then cap with couple layers of csm?

The 1/2ply for support should I glass or can just use several coats of resin?

I Am using poly resin.

Run your stringers to the transom and provide a hole/cut-out next to the hull so they drain. Your current approach will make the structure weaker than it should be.

Well I just answered one of my questions, I'm assuming this is woven(?) Stuck small prybar under and it pulled up. No fillet, just layer over plywood. So more tear down/up in my future

I wanted to mention, but I think I'm too late to not run the bottom of the transome to the hull where the drain hole is. I cut out an opening in the transom wood slightly larger than the opening of what the hole would be and filled it with PB; this way,when drilled I hopefully eliminated a contact point between water and wood therefore eliminating a possible point of rot.

my drain hole is 2in above keel I just decided I'm gonna pour resin into a puddle into the keel to set a transducer for depth/fish finder then use 3in copper coated with PB

That's great, but make a hole larger to eliminate the possible wood to eliminate the wood contacting water. I used pex and a little 3m 5200 on the outside, whether I needed to or not.

Finished grinding down the hull/bilge, tabbed in the transom. Gotta reduce mix ratio, 94° in the carport today.

You want to get to "clean" fiberglass, which means grinding out all old tabbing. When I was finished, I was staring at the hull, which had a pinkish/orange hugh.
The reason I was told is that you get the best bond between the hull and new glass; that's where the strength comes from. I could tell areas I missed because you can visually see the lack of bonding, so on I went and re-did it.
I think of it this way: Why would you repaint something that is made of wood before removing the loose paint first?
