Re: My new/old 1971 SS
Re: My new/old 1971 SS
Halfmoa, the consoles are actually pretty easy to remove. Mine were secured with screws to the deck and nuts and bolts to the gunwale. I did remove the front seating first so that I could remove the wood panel that is secured to the front of the consoles. That was held on with rivets that had to be drilled out. After getting those panels off it was easy to remove the consoles. You also will need to disconnect your steering. I'm not sure exactly what the type of steering I have is called, but basically it looks like rack and pinion and there are four bolts that hold the two parts together. Again pretty simple to remove. Other than that you need to remove the windshield of course. on mine they were held on with three bolts that are rather strange looking. I will take a picture and post it for you. I have seen comments on different threads here in regards to when Star Craft went to the triple windshield. I think you will find that the common thought is 73 or 74. It's possible that somewhere in the past 40 years someone changed yours out. My parents had a 74 SS with the triple windshield and that is what I would like to convert mine to. The major difference other than the center windshield of course is that as I remember it theirs had an aluminum channel across the bottom of the windshield whereas mine just has a rubber gasket with no aluminum channel.View attachment 115992 This is what my parents boat looked like. I hope this helps, I am really still a novice on the rebuilding. Take time and read some of the other threads. Huron Angler has done a great job on his. Also there are alot of other threads that you can learn a lot from even though they may not be SS's. I have been following Jasoutside's, Yooperangler, and Paparoof and have learned a lot from them. Also ezmobee has a great thread on his rebuild and he is great about helping out anyone with comments.
