Re: My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

Hey BF, give some thought to going with 4 bunks like I did on the current trailer under the holiday, reason's!! I have tried rollers, bunks and keel rollers and now 4 bunks. My thinking good or bad is the two lower bunks are 7"s apart and will be a back to front guide to keep the keel dead straight all the way up. With keel rollers which I also like, I have had a couple times the boat will catch the first one but not the second on and then you end up having to back out and try again. Just my 2 cents.

2 more of Glen's super powers revealed...trailer setups & mind reading!!!

I was staring at a few trailer setups this morning and your most recent caught my attention for that very reason. 9 of 10 times I'm retrieving in rivers often with stiff current.

I bet even a bunk near the 1st 2 keel rollers would help tremendously with keeping the boat aligned.

thanks man! :thumb:

P.S. No riveting today. :)

P.S.S. Undercarriage & trailer hardware ordered this morning. I think i'll keep the keel rollers (since I already bought them last year) but order a few more bunk holders for the keel.

I'll be interested to seen what you do with the trailer running gear. I have basically the same trailer (though mine has the posh and exclusive V-shaped frame). I put a Tractor Supply axle on mine and the spring mounts were just a little too wide. As I don't weld, I just bolted the thing on and torqued it down. This, of course, eventually bent the axle and is wearing my tires unevenly. I'm probably going to just buy a new trailer but who knows.

I was oogling those v-shaped x-members! I bet it drops the boat a few inches.

Once the undercarriage arrives, I'm going to take it...along with the suspension / axle and have Congelosi Trailers fabricate a new axle for me.

I was giving the trailer axles the eye at the local Big R Coastal farm store, 150 bucks for one complete axle. The parts stores wanted more for new seals, bearings and redi sleeves.

I'm all for the 4 bunks with 2x6's. On my trailer I'm going with the 4 bunks as well, already have the parts and 2 keel rollers. Just need to get a rotten hunk of carp off my trailer and get to work on it. Only thing with bunks is them bonking a sharp edge on your newly installed rivets. I see that some of the guys have cut a bevel in the leading edge of the bunk board to give them a ramp to slide up on rather than the edge.

The bevel and fresh bunk carpet cushions the hull when loading. I cut a 45 on the end of the bunk, so no sharpies to catch rivets.

Thanks for the tips guys! That's a great idea! :thumb:

No dredgery here Sig!

I'm not sure if it was the new scenery ....or being able to work outside for the 1st time in months ...or playin' with a big-ol' Erector Set

Sometimes a change of scenery is a good thing. The boat is a big ol erector set, funny how as we get older our tear stuff up and put it back together toys get bigger. Lets just hope I am better at putting them back together as an adult.

Good plan. I've got a high school friend who's family runs an RV shop who have helped myself and some other friends with trailer work before and they could certainly do a custom axle for me. It is tempting to pursue since the bulk of my trailer is in really nice shape. However, I got a quote of $1475 for a brand new galvanized Venture bunk trailer and once you start adding up all the parts needed to make my trailer like new......the numbers get a little too close together..........;)

Re: My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

I dropped by the trailer place this morning with my old axle/suspension assy and ordered a new axle for ~ $150 (Free shipping as long as I'm willing to wait 2-3 weeks). The spring blocks come loose so that they can customize/weld the spring centers.

But that's not the real reason I stopped by the thread this morning.

It's my thread's 1-Year Anniversary

Thanks for all of the help, support and encouragement guys! :thumb:

Please apply to work in the current production stream, don't let them bury you in the factory refurb/retrofit program.

Trailer Parts Superstore - Shopping Index

I have bought from these guys.... I recommend trailer tires at 15", OR of a size ta you have on another trailer in your possession already

the angle bracket is sweet, make it very easy to adjust the pivot point.....
