Looks real good BF, should add a ton of strength to the hull.

Happy New Year to you as well.

Thanks Glen! My goal has been to not rely on wooden components for strength and this is a major measure for achieving that goal!

Looks great BF!

Thanks jb! almost want to use lexan sidepanels

2013: Year-in-review

2013 started-off with me doing a lower-unit overhaul on my 35Hp Evinrude so that my 16' BlueFin would be operational for our annual spring catfishing trip.

After spending quite a bit of time on the iBoats Johnson/Evinrude forum, I stumbled on the StarCraft corner of the world (probably through someone's resto signature).

After reading EZ's SS rebuild, I was hooked. You guys know where it goes from there --> eBay / Craigslist --> Mob induction. :hat:

I had high hopes of having the boat ready for the fall so my emphasis would be on the outboard...you guys made restoring the actual boat look so easy! I was completely oblivious to what this hull had hidden under her deck & layers of paint & epoxy.

Thanks for stayin' with me on this guys! Bring-on 2014! :thumb:

Ya know BF, I was looking at your pics of the new braces last night and meant to say something then, but the Admiral brought me another glass of bubbly. Oh well, That work is still outstanding a year later!

Happy New Year.

EDIT - Nice work index, too. :D

Man nice work on the index, that's always a huge help to find stuff when you reference a thread in a post elsewhere.

I'd suggest you quote yourself, cut & paste the quote, & edit your 1st post to include that index ;)

Again, nice work!

BTW: I've been suggesting someone doing a minimal repair on some corrosion check out your thread as an excellent example of how bad a small area of corrosion could really be. We'll see, for now they've chosen to fill the spots & go w/ it.

Thanks GaB!

Your Admiral was serving you drinks...while my Admiral was trying to take mine away  :fish:

Thanks! I just added the thread index to the opening post.

Hopefully the OP of the recent corrosion thread heeds your warning

Re: My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

Once the cobwebs wore-off this afternoon, I ran with Grandad's suggestion and removed the Bow ribs.

These were a bugger to remove. Here's why. When those ribs cross the bow-plate seam rivets, they're not tight against the hull-skin. What happens is that the rivet flairs out under the rib flange. In addition, residual epoxy helped lock it in place.

So whachyagottado is this. Get the bucktails off...I drill most of the material away and use my trusty chisel to smack it away. Then gently pry-off the rib.

So, the area under the rib is some of the nicest material on the hull  There's some shallow pitting under the flange where the epoxy was able to reach but nothing of concern. I'm glad that I did it...can't put a pricetag on peace-of-mind!

Lastly, I locked the gunwale & shelf to the big support near the console with some honkin' 3/16" solid rivets...when I started positioning the gunwale, a few of those rinky-dink, corroded pop-rivets in the gunwale cap popped-off so they got replaced with 5/32" solid rivets. I'm going to have to truncate the gunwale trim under the console but its worth it.

Thanks for stoppin' by! :yo:

BF you sure are ambitious. That metal looks great under the ribs, you've got a lot of riveting to do.

Awe come-on Astor...are you jealous of my riveting job ahead?? Actually this is one of those rare instances where I believe that assembly is more enjoyable than demolition

Good job BF, that is dynamite work! I think we can all say that the SC factory guys would have never ever thought of such an effective repair for their lack of engineering.

Looks great. Maybe SC should hire you as a consultant, mechanized rivet training supervisor or QC inspector on the line :)

Very nice, might have to steel this.

I tried to get him to pre fab and sell those stiffeners under the brand name "Alum-Agra" for all his buds with floppy SC's.

Thanks Jason! At a minimum I recommend the vertical risers. With those in place, I'm not sure the spray-rail / outer-chine braces are as beneficial...and the SR/OC braces are about 10x the work!

dang, that had me in tears man! I almost went there with GaB's comment ^^^
