Re: my first boat 1962 mfg

My dad and I tried getting this old girl running yesterday with no luck. I had to run jumper cables from the starting system to the battery in my truck and it was rotating but no go. So we ended up taking carb off sprayed everything out with carb cleaner and a hole next to the float was plugged up. Ended up putting everything back together and. Took cover off the top to get debirs out but gotta take nut off gears that I believe is a 1 or 1 1/16. And it wasn't getting spark so we got new plugs that r a little hotter(j8c instead of the j4c that was in it) for now to try and get it runnin. Any ideas how to trouble shoot ignition on it.

Start a thread over in the Johnson/Evinrude forum and I'm sure those guys can get you headed in the right direction .

Got it going; had to take carb off and clean it out and took flywheel off and cleaned up points with sandpaper. She ran pretty good for 50 year old motor just gotta get new head cause it loses compression out of spark plug. Now just gotta get seats, fuel tank (thinking on 15 or 18 gallon plus 6 gallon spare) and I'm gonna use battery out of truck I had.

How would I hook up rope to tow a inner tube on this boat. Is there something particular I have to get?

Awesome boat! Reminds me of a buddy's project boat... sadly he had to give up on it due to $ and sold it for pennies.

I am excited to see all the supportive responses, too. Building community is critical to success and I am excited to move forward with my own projects and get involved.

Looking forward to the after-pics! :)

How would I mount pedestal style seats in boat? Would it be fine just to screw them to the deck or would I have to reinforce where I mount them.

I would make a pad out of plywood cut the edges on a 45 deg angle seal it with glass then glass it to the deck where you want the pedestal .
Maybe 2 layers of 1/2 " or 3/4 "..

Like sphelps says, pads is the way to go. Use Stainless T-Nuts then Stainless nuts to bolt the pedestals to the pads. Something like this would work great...

Would one piece of 3/4" be fine, and the t nuts are those the ones the spring out when they go threw the hole.

I'd highly recommend 2 layers of 3/4" and these are T-Nuts...

By the looks of them they go under the wood and you nail em to it with holes drilled for the pedestal correct me if I'm wrong.
