Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

Okay I just took the pump off and with it in my hand pushing the ram in I have no suction on the in I have suction on the sight tube barb. So I put it back togther and pluged off the sight tube hose and still nothing It is not pulling fuel at all. Thinking maybe this brand new fuel pump is bad or wrong one for my older motor.

I don't have any gas in a seperate gas can right know to try or I would.

Ayuh,... That's a Severe handicap to yer diagnosis....

Put a piece of tubing on the pump, 'n manually pump the gas outa yer lawnmower or something..
Or,...
Wrap yer lips around the line from the tank, 'n see if ya can get anything,..??

Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

I will have to run down to town and get some gas tomorrow to try that. I would drain the fuel from tractor but it is diesel. I can't beleive it is a gas tank issue since it had the boat running three weeks ago witht the old motor.

Well I forgot I have a friends lawn mower here so I went out and drained a glass jar of fuel and put a rubber hose in it straight from the inlet of the pump into the jar and nothing while cranking it does not pull any fuel.

Might be a stupid question but do you have the pushrod for the pump in place. You shouldnt need a regulator, stock pump puts out 5-7 lb. The line from the tank to the water seperator should be marine approved rubber to absorb engine viberation.

Yes I do have the push rod for the pump in place I understand have to ask all questions. I did pull the regulator, gauge and inline filter and tried it that way also. Also the fuel line from the tank to the water seperator is marine grade. I hate trying this to much I thought you could ruin a rebuilt motor if you try to start it to much.

Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

Okay well I did some more reading and being pretty sure my motor is a 68-78 motor since I have port side dipstick. When I look up the 18-7283 It says it fits 83-95 so maybe my push rod will not activate this pump correctly.

Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

I been reading this post and you mentioned no fuel to carb. Try this, find a fuel primer bulb and hose, connect to pump and prime the system. Any air leak up stream to the pump, and it won't pump. Priming some fuel to the pump will help the check valves in the pump to work. Also when you ordered the motor, did you get a roller cam option? it might not have a fuel pump lobe on the cam, might be setup for electric pump. At least with the fuel pimer bulb you should get gas to the carb and it will run.

I am going to run down to napa and see what they have for fuel pumps. Some reason I think I have the wrong one. I did not order the motor with a roller cam. I tried to turn the motor with a ratchet while I was holding the fuel pump push rod and it felt like it moved alittle but hard to tell by myself.

Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

Okay I pulled the pump off and stuck the in port hose into a glass jar of fuel and pushed the ram in and I can get it to splash gas out of the out port. I also checked the casting number on the block and and it confirms the motor is a 69-77 gm 350. I have never had to prime a mechanical fuel pump or fuel lines or carb on any car setup but they also always had a car fuel pump not a marine one.

Ayuh,... Which would lead one to believe the issue is Upstream,....

Again, you HAVE to confirm the tank is willing to give up the gas...

Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

Okay well I went to napa and that was a waste. So I came back and with my finger on the rod and turn the motor over the rod does move in and out. So I figured the cam was fine. So then I hooked the pump lines up and manually pumped it and I heard it pump fuel and fill the carb. But while doing that the pump was leaking I guess I when I tightened the 90 on the out port I over tightned it to make it face up and cracked the pump so know it leaks. So another 100.00 screw up. I just need to make sure this pump is right since it said it only fits 83-95 and my motor is a 69-77.

Before going to anymore trouble do what Bond-o said and test the up stream capability of fuel draw from the tank you my have a cloggerd vent or plugged strainer on the bottom of the tank draw tube as wel as a stuck anti siphoon valve??? all very good possibilities besides your craked fuel pump just remember least exspensive thing 1st (TROUBLE SHOOTING)

Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

I figured I know the tank will give fuel since I can hook all the hoses up and manually pump the pump and it will suck fuel from the tank into the seperator then to the pump out of the pump up to the carb and filled the bowls on the carb other than were the out port is on the pump is leaking. I need to see if were you can take the pump apart if I can replace the center plate that has the out port in it.

Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

Okay I went over to my parents house tonight for dinner and we had a new gm small block auto car pump there I brought it home and hooked it up and go figure the boat started right up. So know the question is the 18-7283 actually fit a 69-77 block and did I crack the fitting the first time or one of the other 5 times I took the pump off last night or today.

Ayuh,... Accordin' to this Napa marine specialities catalog in my lap,...
Guessin' at serial #s,..
18-7283 is for an 80s SBC, up to 'bout when they went electric...
The earliest serial #s call for a 18-7274...
The only differences I see, or know about is possibley the clocking of the ports...
I've never known there to be a Difference in fuelpumps of earlier blocks,...

That leads me to believe ya busted the housing right off the bat, 'n it's been suckin' Air...

Matter of fact, I Believe you can interchange fuelpumps between All of the Chevy V-motors....
The 60s, right through the end, V6s, SBCs, 'n BBCs,...

Yes...to a point. Not trying to argue with ya' Bond-o, but that is why there are different part numbers. They may work...but not correctly and not for long. When I was in the auto parts biz, if I had a dollar for every time I heard the phrase "it's for a three-fitty chevy...they're all the same" I could retire. More often than not, they were right back in the store wanting a refund because "we" sold them the wrong part. Just sayin...

Re: ordering motor in morning have you ever heard of

I agree INFIDELTARGET
I even looked up abunch of auto fuel pumps and 78-86 gm's used one pump and from 68-77 they used a different part number looked identical so something inside must be different. I don't have a serial number for a motor since mine is a different motor and rapido marrine said I needed this year motor and now can figure out a fuel pump. My other otion is a aftermarket like holley that says it will work 67-98
part number 712-327-11. But didn't want to fork out that much more.

Ayuh,... It's the directions of the ports,... Clocking of the housings...

I stand by what I said,...
The Block to pump interface doesn't change...

You are correct sir. They will bolt up. But they also have differing diaphragm materials and operating pressures, as well as longer/shorter levers. Like I said, wasn't trying to argue with ya'. :) A universal like the Holley can be made/modified to work with most any of them.
