Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Hope everyone is have a nice 4rth !
I got sidetracked with installing a new impeller on our well pump today..
DSC00671.jpg

Was hoping it would solve a water flow problem but it didn't help much.. I may need to have a new well installed.
I did get about 95% of the tape residue of the trim I want to paint. It was kinda a pita used goo gone and a razor blade.
DSC00672.jpg

ShouldI sand or maybe use a scotch bright pad to take the oxidation off before I TSP and vinegar wash it ?
I also need to decide what type wood to use for the bottom. It bolts under the lip on the inside bottom and then is fastened to angles that are bolted thru the bottom rub rail holes..

i would say try the scotch brite first, you may also consider rubbing compound, i've used it on an oxized car before.

I may be late to the party, but this might prove helpful:

I suppose that once you get the oxidation off, you can then prep & paint as usual. I have some miscalaneous aluminum trim from the G3 @work that I may try his HD drain opener & polish on.

Let me know if you reconsider that Cata ~ Manta-Ray:D

Checkout the "more info" on that vid...says to use 000 fine steel wool with the cleaner, bet that does a good job....going to have to try that....

JB is that you in the vid? Sure sounds like a WV accent to me :)

Tried out the drain cleaner stuff . It did get a lot of the oxidation off but I still have a lot of pitting on the allum. Here is some rub rail that I was fiddling around with.

I'm not sure if I got enough grease in my elbow to polish all the r/r. LOL !

I'm more of the man behind the camera kind of photogenic;)

Thanks though.... Anytime I'm compared to an Internet star it's a good thing, right?

SP: If you're still planning to paint the RR, a 'little' pitting won't be too bad, maybe an extra round of the high build primer post ZC? Sanding between?

I'm running low on grease in the primary elbow too:facepalm: Got the 'trade me in for 2 23yr olds' @ the 46th b-day this year. Broke down & busted:( It was funnier when I asked the same @her 44th. Admiral told me then I aint wired for 220:confused:

I really wasn't planing on painting the r/r just the trim or the vert supports at the gunnel I guess you would call ski rack . But painting it would be an option . Not sure what color would look good though.. The original insert is black . Still got it but it's not in great shape.
Jon painted his and it looked pretty good ..

Btw, thanks for reminding me I'm gunna turn 48 this sept ! :)

If you can live w/ the brushed look, it can hide some of the pits. Plus starting pretty low @ the grit may knock some of them down too. Finishing w/ a scotchbrite pad. Having the r/r off the boat will make it easier to give it a smooth even 'brushed' look.

Did the shiny side with my angle grinder. The other side I hit with a wire wheel..

+1 shiny, the other is too aggressive a brushed look, IMHO

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Yep , I think your right . Shiny is more work but it does look better.
I'm gettin a little excited about starting the seats! I got the pieces that I kerfed a while back all cut sanded and ready to start glassing.
DSC00680.jpg

Gunna put together a jig to make them curved. I know it would have been much easier to make them straight but I wanted them to have a more bucket seat look to them..

Just keep telling yourself, that all the extra details like shiny r/r and curved seats, etc...are a ton of extra work now, but the pay-off of getting use and enjoy them for countless outings to come, well, my friend...that will make it all worthwhile...;)

Re: MFG rebuild getting started pics

Bear ,
Thanks my friend for the kind words ! Yep these old classics are just as cool as the classic cars.. I sure would love to have an old 60's pickup for a tow vehicle . My boss has a 65 I think Ford Bronco that is mint that I would love to talk him out of.

GT,
Yep , I sure hope to be enjoying it soon. The guys at work keep asking " you got that boat in the water yet". Nope still workin on it..

Well I did get alittle done this afternoon . Got the seat backing glass started . Cut some csm and rolled a coat of resin on then backed it up with some pb with fibers spread down into the kerf's.
DSC00681.jpg

DSC00682.jpg

Tomorrow I will sand the hairs down some then lay csm down.
I need to figure out the shape of the transom seats and get those cut out and glassed...

You know when you are finnished with her, if your not on the water you will not know what to do with yourself.
I have put so much time in on mine, that's all I think about. I will love to see it finnished but will hate to stop working on her.

The seat backs or looking great. You sure do some good looking work. Can't wait to see them all together in the boat.
