Glad you found it...I felt it was ignition related! Hope you got it before replacing the carb again.
Is that wire a resistance wire by any chance? Just in case someone else has these issues.

Now...get it into the water and fun

Yes, it was the resistance wire, dropped the Igniter voltage below spec. Chased this problem forever! Thanks for all your help.

Congratulations, and now you have lots of new 'ish' parts on your motor as well.

Replaced the original (points) coil with a modern performance one today (Flame-Thrower) - matched to the PerTronix Igniter electronic ignition conversion. Reset the timing (offset distributor wrench is a godsend!), and the engine is running noticeably smoother - on muffs anyway.

This is a little confusing tho, the original coil taken out says "use without external resisitor" - of course that's where the problem was, the resistance wire causing a voltage drop below spec on the Igniter... curiouser and curiouser... photo below.

Purple wire from electric choke to pos side of coil. Looks like normal wire, but if you measure it, about 1.8 ohms.

With new "Flame-Thrower" coil, noticeable improvement in performance. Smooth acceleration, and a bit more top end. Worth it!
