Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

And yesterday HF was having a little sale, so I picked up a sandblaster kit, holds 50lbs of media...
$33

Reviews online said it works good with $3 a bag play sand from lowes, so I got two bags to try it out with.

and I also got a spray gun, reviews looked good so I figured what the heck...
$19

I got the type where the paint can is under the sprayer, not sure if was the correct type, I sure hope so. :)

I'll see how it does on the trailer first, and if results are good I'll use it on the boat...

and what type of blasting media, if any can I use on aluminum?

Or should I just stick to paint stripper?
I was thinking this would make it nice cleaning up the splash well, and the bottom of the nova.

Well I had some fun today on the trailer with the sandblaster, it worked great with the play sand (beach sand).

I have the front mostly cleaned up, and I yanked the side rails, and rollers.

I went through about 100lbs of play sand before I called it a day

back to working on the kitchen...

Sure beats using a sander!!! Great price too. Back to the hunny do list huh... bummer.
Always cutting into boat play time... but a must do!!! Gotta keep the significant other your life happy!!!

Glad to see you are making some more progress.

Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

Thanks, it feels good making progress :)

I sure wish there was an easy way to get the boat off of the old trailer onto the new trailer...

I have been thinking of easy ways to do it...
best way I have come up with is to drop the boat off at the lake this spring, have the wife boat sit, head home, swap trailers and load

but I then run into the issue where I need to adjust the bunks, rollers, front post before heading home...

Other way I can think of is to remove the front post from the old trailer, wedge the old trailer under the rear of the new, then attempt to crank the boat onto the new trailer...

Another option would be to get into the attic in the garage, add some braces to the roof supports (until I'm happy with it) mount some hooks in the ceiling, and lift the boat off of the trailer.

This would also be a nice thing to have and it would make taking care of the boat easier for me, and it would help me when working on the nova...

Good morning, G. Have you looked at any of the threads where the poster just ties the boat to a tree and gently pulls the boat off the trailer. They do it with fully loaded boats and it's a lot easier with with a stripped out hull because it's lighter. They put the new trailer under the boat fairly easy too. Might work for ya.

Ga is right there. If you can tie it off even to the back end of another car, pick up some from old tires from a local tire shop, that's where I got mine. There are likely other threads, but in my thread I describe in a little detail when I picked up Jupiter two how to get the boat back on the trailer. If you've got dollies... gais right, you can push it off one trailer and push or winch it on to the other, which is how I've done it as well.

Hey Gib, looking real good, your making real progress. In my 87 SS thread at the beginning you will see the boat is pulled off the trailer to almost the balance point. I then backed it into the shop and we unhooked the trailer from the truck, put an old tire under the hull at the transom on both sides then loosen the winch about a foot and lift the tougne of the trailer till the boat is on the tires and the trailer will just slide right out from under the boat. I have even done this myself although I don't recommend it. Putting it back on just hook up the winch strap have someone lift the tougne and steer the trailer as the other one cranks the winch and the trailer will walk right under the boat. I don't think I would try this method with a heavy glasser but is sure works good with tin boats. I loaded my 18SS by myself it was so easy.

Thanks

And I had hoped to attempt this with the engine not on the boat, but it's on there so +200lbs. :)

I will give it a try and see how it goes, and I wish I had a tree in my yard that could support the boat, I have trees that go straight up and the edge of my yard, and some mature apple trees.
The apple trees may not have enough branch to support anything other than apples...

My wife would have a ball with that I'm sure :p

And I finally got the (correct) final bracket for the engine cover for the $35 65hp, everything fits great!
Next timing belt & timing
Also the distributor is greased and moves mostly, but it's still sticking...
It does not move smooth enough to make the timing work correctly yet, hopefully it won't require a tear down/cleaning...

Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

I just went through the same thing on my 500. When I gave full throttle the distributor limited at the spark advance stop and the butterflies were only open about a 1/4 of the way. Grease didn't help me. Ended up dropping the whole mess and cleaning out 45 year old grease that turned to tar. Yuck. Anyway, I have fully open butterflies now.

A word of caution - be careful with the belt. I broke mine after it was all together. It was a bit brittle and lasted 45 years so /i can't complain. Except those puppies are expensive. I've found $20-$30-$40 and up prices.

Yeah... both of my 650's need a belt at this point

The most recent one has a good looking belt in general, but it has some belt groove damage in one part

when turning the engine by hand the belt jumps at that spot

Between us we need 3 belts. I think we use the same one (20140). Maybe we qualify for quantity pricing. LOL

Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

well I need to get more pictures taken here soon

over the weekend I glued up the carpet on the sides and took it all the way to the front, looks tons better IMO

I also polished up the boat a little, it needed it bad, the paint job the PO put on there sure does shine :D

And Joann's fabrics sent me a bunch of coupons, two 40% off anything, and one 50% off

So I bought a bunch of marine vinyl in grey, black, and blue.

I got more than enough to do what little I need on the jet, and should be enough for the nova as well :D

Gotta love those Joann's coupons! When I got my vinyl, I got 40% off, plus it was the end of a roll, so they gave me almost a yard on top of that. I'm glad I didn't have much vinyl application to do because I wasn't very good at it! Flat areas were not too bad, but corners, that's another story.

Hope you can get some pics up soon.

Nice progress!

Het Gib - Here's the best price I found for the timing belt. $19.79 + shipping. It's Quicksilver (OEM) and the package was originally marked $32.60. Good service and it arrived in 8 days. HTH.

Working on pictures, and I find my self being pulled to the boat

Thanks, and one thing I remember learning about vinyl is heat makes it take a shape, but my wife also has a sewing machine that should be able to sew through this stuff... but I will play with that when I start on the nova, the jet gets to stay very simple.

Nice find, thanks!

I tore more into the engine today, no way that engine ran for the PO at the end
the timing was way off!

and I tried to find an easy way to yank the timing belt, but I ended up having to pull the flywheel hub off of the crankshaft in order to get the belt to come out.

I also finally got the dist to move freely and smoothly thanks to some fresh grease and flushing it out with seafoam.

after I got the pully off I could rinse it out pretty easy.

Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

I ordered two timing belts from that link (BPS).
I had written off the site due to the fact that many of the links are broken, and the price was just to much lower than everyone else...

After ordering I noticed I had no way to check on order status, even though I created a login...

but I finally got a shipment notice today :D

Also I finally looked at the boat year, it's a 1963
