I also got my fish finder today...

I drove my self nuts trying to decide, going to alot of stores and pushing buttons, and reading manuals, reviews, specs ect...

I finally settled on a Garmin Echo 200, large screen, and lots of functions, I decided this was the one for me...

I'll try and get it some what mounted this weekend if I can. :)

Glad I live east of the Rockies. You seem to be racking up all the great finds in February over on the west side.... I thought my '71 looked pretty good. But the last 36+/- yrs have been good to that motor, even a tad banged up.

Be good to that angel on your shoulder!:)

Almost forgot, the lower unit shifts fine now, it may of been the spider nest keeping it from shifting.

But I also let it sit on its side with fresh lube, may of loosened it inside.

I really want to say I've never hated anyone more, but as it's supposed to be a family friendly, helpful forum, I'll go with:
Congrats! :D

Sometimes the pieces just seem to fall into place. Really great when it does.

Good deal on getting the lower unit broken free!

Looking forward to seeing either boat & motor splash!

Well keep putting good stuff out there, & hopefully it will continue to come full circle!

I just spent some time looking for electrical parts for a 1963 650 I haven't yet seen. Just to get an idea. Yikes! Magneto distributor cap = $175+/-. Makes a 3rd parts motor look like a good idea too. It's a '70 650, almost the same as my current long shaft '71 650.

I may need to make a late night raid over to the Dr FrankenMerc's secret stash over on the FiberGl...ics website.

Ebay has been my best friend, I have been collecting spare parts when they come up cheap.

I have an entire dist assy with a decent rotor and cap sitting in a box, paid $40, $30 set of carbs for spare parts (bought for the part that houses the float seats), and a few other odds n ends that looked good...

I still know where another 650 is, clear down south...
I was in the area two weekends ago, but I decided to skip messing with the outboard...
mostly due to my wife :)

Spiders, wasps, mice, squirrels and a whole lot more. These old gals have a serious pest problem. Or are all of us rebuilding the Ark? We ought to start an extermination thread. :p

Well I got the carbs cleaned on that new merc 650, new gaskets, and replaced the fuel lines going from fuel pump to carbs.

New fuel pump diaphram & gasket

And while going through the fuel filter assy, I snapped off the little lug that holds everything together...

So I just added a T fitting coming out of the fuel pump, and I'll add an inline filter...

And while looking over the engine I noticed that the dist gear does not line up with the belt alignment mark, there is also a bit of damage to the timing belt on one spot.

It looks like at one point in this engines life the timing belt slipped.

looks like enough to keep the engine from running...

Might be related to what ever happend to the cowel and brackets, belt was deformed a bit, looked like it might of sucked something in there.

I'll know more once I get the belt off and look over the gear...

And over the weekend I bolted the engine down.

Drilled the holes, then spread some epoxy to seal the wood, next day after it cured, I used lots of 5200 and installed the bolts.

I also installed the transducer on the transom, and ran the wire into the boat

Ended up drilling a hole above the water line (almost near the top of the transom), and sealed with epoxy.

One thing I cannot decide on is where to mount the fish finder...

Pictures of fishfinder install

(echo 200)

transom extend worked out nice here, the fish finder screwed into wood there, sealed with tons of 5200
I injected it into the hole and coated the screws :D

And I found some outdoor carpet at home depot on the clearance rack

I got more than enough to do my entire boat for $30

its labled as 100% uv protected & mildew proof

I kinda just tossed it up to see how it looks

Above you can see a little of the engine cowl I bought for the other engine

I decided I better do a test fit of the parts I picked up as I noticed a few differences.
and the bracket I bought, and waited a solid week for the seller to ship, then another week for it to get here, turned out it was the wrong one...

No returns on that one, so $36 down the drain...

I confirmed I got the correct part, and verfied that all the parts I have will work with the cowl + the bracket
So I made a second order with another seller for $60 shipped...

And the cowl I bought appears to be from late 70's early 80's

I like the older stickers that came in 1975, they look more modern IMO

Things are looking real good, Gibbles. Maybe you can put up your wrong parts on ebay and recoup some of your $$$. I did that a few times during my project. In fact I have something up right now hoping someone will grab it this spring, a $130 mistake.

I like the look of your windshield.

Your transom extension looks good too, that should fly when you get it all done!:)

Thanks :)

I really like the way the windsheild worked out, I'm glad my FIL talked me into installing it.

And I was thinking about listing that bracket, but they do not appear to be a big ticket item.

I think I might have better luck selling wear parts, but if I locate the real part number for it I might have a chance.

And I still need to cut and install some angle aluminum on the extended transom for the extended transom to knee braces.

I plan on using some rivets to connect to the knee and SS screws into the transom.

It should give it that finished look + add a little strenght

I also need to build the fuel tank platform up front to get some weight off of the back of the boat ;)

I'm also trying to decide what to do with the gunwales, they are a bit sad looking.

I'm leaning to painting, or pulling the top rub rail channel, installing carpet, replace rub rail channel with angle aluminum and rivet back in place...
Wood is another option as well...

sounds like you have it narrowed right down there..........;)

are you talking about inside of gunwales, where you lean when fighting a fish? i have the same issue on my Holiday....if i don't put soething there, will burn self on aluminum or bang thighs frequently. right now i'm leaning toward redwood (soft wood, doesn't rot easily) 1x6, wrapped in the foam backed vinyl from Defender.

Yes, that's the place.

Carpet would be easy with some angle to trim it up, wood would be harder but would give it more class.

Lookin good there Gibbles... The transom extension came out really nice. Sorry to hear about the cowl parts not fitting...someone will be looking for them --- you really should be able to recoup some or all of your cost.

Yeah... hopefully
If not, it's just part of the costs involved with being a bottom feeder. :)
Heck it's $35 engine, what's a few bucks lost on a wrong part :D
