Gib - If the $35 650 never runs you still made out like a bandit. If you decide to sell anything make sure you post in the SC parts thread - even though we're talking Merc parts. And you have a serious case MBS complicated by MMS. No the second M doesn't stand for motor, rather Mercury. :D

GA is right, you stole the motor, even if you use it for parts. For new parts, you're lucky if you can get a nut & a bolt for $35!!

I don't know about that Mercury business though, I confess to two of them. Although I've been told they are Tohatsu's under the skin. Also have been told they are Yamaha underneath. No matter, they are both great engines.

I think it depends on what year as far as Yammy or Tohats. Seems all the OB makers are using each others motors any more. Just like if Ford started using small block Chevies in Mustangs.

Well great news on the 650

nothing is wrong with it, its cherry...

One thing to note on the boat I pulled it from, it was last licenced back in 1976 or 77...

I pulled the dist cap today, its shiney and brass, looks like the cap and rotor were pulled from the box brand new and run for a few hours!

I pulled the plugs (two were broken) and sprayed with seafoam.

When I turned the engine I felt grit, so I yanked the flywheel, years of grime/dust needed to be cleaned, now it turns over smootly.

Compression feels good, I have not tested it yet, but all three cyl have even carb deposits, and look really good.

I drained the lower oil, it was full, and old but clean
very old...

Everything was bound up, so alot of deepcreep sprayed everywhere, I can now move the throttle, and I got some movement in the shifter, It now goes from F to N, and almost reverse...
right now its soaking.

Next I'll yank the lower and the carbs, and get some pictures.

and looking at the engine, it looks like something hit the back of the engine breaking a mount for the cowl and two sparkplug in that area.

I kinda wonder if the prev owner did not know what to do and left it sitting in his garage for all of these years.

and an interesting thing about the house, I found it in the list of houses we looked at last year when shopping, but I decided the price was to high for the amount of work it needed (but never went to see it, just wrote it off).
I think this boat was sitting in the garage, these guys bought it and dragged it out of the garage.

Odd how I kinda fell into these mercs, and they all are covered by the one manual too!

I have been trying to find that thread again, I want to post the old steering setup for my jet.

I want it out of the garage, but I hate to just throw it away...

Once I get everything figured out, I need to start listing things, 6 outboards + 1 Clinton outboard = wife doing one of these

Your right, parts for these older mercs are valuable.

the near mint dist cap and rotor on this new 650 = $$
new old stock dist cap = $200
rotor = $180

I also have a bunch of parts for the merc 20hp 200s
I have a powerhead off of a 77 that was the electric start model
complete with flywheel and charging coils, and carb
and I have two starter motors for that model also

the red band 800 also has a nice stock of rare parts

Jas is keeping this in his boatyard by for you....... It'll take all 6, plus 1 or 2 more.....

Owner says make offer, so....................
Just showing this to the Admiral will probably cure most guys of MBS and of being able to feed themselves.....

Gib - Here's the parts link. Just remember that forum rules prohibit selling in the forum. If and when you do post list what you have with no prices and tell peeps to PM you for details. I wouldn't say you are selling the stuff, just have some "surplus" gear. It makes sense because our host is a boating store.

Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

thanks!

For the steering I just hate to toss it away when someone out there might actually want it.
I won't charge anything for it other than shipping.

And I pulled the lower unit from that new merc 650, it looks clean other than the creatures that managed to get in there and build nests (spiders) glad I sprayed it with oil before ripping it apart, it had a nasty web in there...

Everything looks clean, and almost brand new, I took some pictures, and today if I have time I will pull the impeller and upload the pictures and post them.

I also went ahead and bought a new cowl and new brackets for the ones that are broken...
$150 into a $35 engine so far... Total so far = $185

Well Gib, you' re doing a lot better than I did on that! Low investment, high return, that's the way to go! Nice.

I did a nice trade with a member for my old steering and got my STARCRAFT side emblems that way, just happened he was wanting a setup at that time. Worked out for both of us.

Gib - Something wrong here. It's the free motor/boat that should cost more than you could ever afford. LOL It all sounds good for this one though. Sounds like you're almost ready to try a start. :D

Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

yeah getting close, I have a gasket set on order for the carbs, and I changed the lower oil...

I pulled the lower due to shifting issues, but I have not had a chance to see what was causing the problems, might of been related to lack of lube/sitting around so long.

I probably should of waited before I dumped the money, but as clean as this thing is, I'm willing to dump a little more $ if needed.

Ever wonder what an impeller would look like after sitting for 36+/- years?

Here is a shot of the dist cap

Out of my 5 other mercs, I have never seen a drive shaft end look this clean (pulled straight out, no wiping)

General lower unit
I think the writing = assy markings...

my other 650 is rusted pretty badly, I think they did not start using SS until 77 or 79
might be chrome finished?

Except for the busted bits it looks well cared for, Gib. Wonder if she got dropped?

I have been trying to figure it out...

I really don't see any real damage other than the mount, prop looks perfect other than missing the inner plasic dome on the prop nut.

I'm thinking something may of fallen on her, or something ran into the back of her.

Possibly at that time it broke the owners heart and never got her fixed :(

So she has been sleeping all of this time, but it's time for her to wake up and get mounted on a proper boat :D
