Merc 470 Fuel Pump Problem?

Of course, the shop where I bought the pump says the problem has to be my carb (which worked just fine before the new pump). They said they have never had any problems installing this fuel pump and they work on a bunch of 470s. I guess I will pop the top off and make sure nothing is stuck in the needle.

You might want to borrow a fuel pressure gauge from Autozone and check the pressure.

Those two links Terry posted earlier are both good info.

Talk about nothing being easy.

Have you held the old pump next to the new pump to check dimensions?

Here are some pics of the 2 pumps. There are 2 differences -- 1)the inlet and outlet are on the same side on the new pump and 2)the arm on the new pump is about 1/2" shorter than the old pump.

Ok. I ran on pressure gauge for about 3 to 5 minutes (a little above idle so it wouldn't die) and it got up to 15 psi before it finally died.

That will do it. 15 is WAY too high.. Mine varies between 3 and maybe 7 psi max. The manual says 3 to 6 psi

I just hope the guy at the shop is not a pain in the ass. He was adamant that it was my carb and not the pump "never seen a bad pump for one of those".

No kidding. I should have read the first link a little better - http://www.breezeworks.net/cgi-bin/M...urnPage=Search. This is the same pump I bought. It looks like this guy never really got it right and went to another pump. I wish I knew which one he wound up using.

Really? I'm wondering if you have read any of these posts as well as the ones on Breezeworks. People have tried to give you good information as contained in posts.....4..5..8..17..19..24..25 and 26. READ.

Ouch!!!! Yeah your photos are not coming through. Here are some 470 pumps from e-bay, which does yours look like? http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trk...w=mercruiser+470+fuel+pump&_sacat=0&_from=R40

The body looks similar to many of them, but the arm does not match any. It is pretty straight without the bend. I still can't post pictures. When I hot the "image" button it freezes up every time.

I will try adding as a link to photobucket.

Thanks Terry! I will exchange this pump for the one you suggest above. I really appreciate the help.

If your definitely getting a new pump... I'd be tearing my existing one apart. Check it out, if it is the diaphragm that's torn, Terry had a link to a diaphragm kit for one of the pumps that fit the 470, as an option....

And IF I was stuck with the new pump cause gas went thru it... and they don't take it back......

I think I'd break it apart and compare the two diaphragms side by side.... ;)
